No one is expecting the movie to be just like the book. What we are expecting is the things that made every version of H2G2 worth experiencing, you know, the jokes and characters and stuff.
The guide entries in the TV series were not cut down, or cut out, for instance, in fact jokes were added in the visuals. My favorite had to be the "Calming Image #XX" used in the entry on suspense.

As skulkbait mentioned, this new script just wasn't his style at all. He knew what material worked for him, to go so blatantly against that, well it just doesn't make sense. I believe he wrote the script, but I don't believe those major changes were his. I don't want to believe that at the very least, but I strongly doubt it at the most.

My fingers are now crossed for a possible <i>extended "now with punchlines!" edition DVD</i> of this movie. You get a big smile on your face when they start building up to the joke, and then the smile fades as the scene quickly cuts to something else, minus the punchline or dialouge that made the entire bloody scene worth using in the first place.
And this happens through the whole movie. Excluding the Whale/Petunias scene (thank god they got something right)
The Marvin Point of view gun scene is the only new addition that made me burst out laughing, everything else is average at best.

THE face/voice of the automated system is Simon Jones.. The same chap who played Arthur Dent in both the BBC radio and TV series....
Since it's a former character that's playing a different type of role in a new version of something he's famous for, it certainly is a nod to the BBC version just as the original Marvin being in line on the Vogon planet was..

I don't know about everyone else, but I <i>liked</i> the movie, despite its unfaithfulness to the books. I wasn't expecting a direct adaptation (not every movie can be like <i>Sin City</i>), so I was able to watch the movie with a positive attitude.

If you're talking about the recorded message about the planet being closed and the two nuclear missiles that turn into a whale and a potted petunia, that's not a hidden reference. Nor is it only from the BBC series interpretation. That's exactly the same as it was in the books.

THE face/voice of the automated system is Simon Jones.. The same chap who played Arthur Dent in both the BBC radio and TV series....
Since it's a former character that's playing a different type of role in a new version of something he's famous for, it certainly is a nod to the BBC version just as the original Marvin being in line on the Vogon planet was..

True, I think that's why they didn't put the old Ford in as a cameo, it would have been like putting Sean Connery in a Paulie Shore film, the contrast of acting would have made people's faces melt off.

Once again, people didn't like it because it is different than the books, but because it's inferior to the books. I don't care about the differences, I care that they took out almost all of the wit.
