Why waste time on making a training level when people can just play the game a few times to learn how to play? Spend the time on much more important things.

Exactly... god tree, have you never had a noob on the same team as you? ITS THE WORST GAMING EXPERIENCE!... well i maybe over reacting a bit, but it does suck, trying to teach them is just as bad...
i think its a really good idea to reduce all the lost people constantly screwing up games... but this certainly wouldnt be the only change that i would make...

We all have been newbies, im sure it took some time from you to learn the basics..

and it's not the worst expirience, it might be also fun, and you can teach them, teaching by player is IMO much better than any trainning level.

Having the Onos charge into crates and use them as shields/damage causers kthxsbye.

BTW, there's a differance between a newbie that doesn't even know the controls/basic gameplay (Solved with trainer) and a newbie who doesn't know the finer points of the game (Solved with time in server)

A training level would be nice. That shows people how to evolve, move, talk, get upgrades and basic use of command chair. Would help a lot of people

As awesome as new vehicles and outdoor maps sounded, I didn't vote for it because I don't think you guys could pull it off. I mean NS like Battlefield 1942? That just doesn't sit well with me. I like the close range battles in NS and I think vehicles and outdoor maps would necessitate long range battles and *shiver* snipers. One of the main things I love about NS is that there is no real sniping in the game.

imo NS should remain an indoor map. Atmospheric reasons. I also can't imagine what kind of aliens will have to be created in order to compete with tanks.

Why do you guys think that vechiles will be tanks? or huge giantic mechs?

What if they will be transport ships?
or some other non-fighting units.

Well... Transport ships won't fit in tiny indoor areas. So the whole idea of adding vehicles is bunk.

VEHICLES DO NOT EQUAL TANKS AND GIANT WEAPONRY SYSTEMS

How many times do I have to say it? A vehicle could be something smaller, like a slightly larger HA with built-in guns and flamethrower, or a little hovercart.

But i strangely picked the ranking system.Well firstly i tought i would pick new alien because this also means new abilityes and counter abilityes to marines. But the more i tought i loved the idea of getting better and moving up the leage.Like the warcraft III system. This way all games would be balanced+statistics and this would help Flayra to balance the game and see where the mistakes are made. But yeh i love to play on a server where you dont have to prove yourself and just know everyone is at the same level of skill as you are.

Its not that bad, if their is a newbie in a game and he needs help or wants to learn I'll take the time to help him. Just think about the amount of games you play that noone ask or needs help compared to the ones that actually do? We shouldn't be that greedy or turn our backs to those that need our help. Also wouldn't you rather take that extra time then the devs so they can use that time to make and add more features into NS?

does anyone even read my posts?! as Novacaine, Crisqo, J the battlegorge and I (among others aswell) have been saying vehicles != tank

Aikon: how exactly would it be unfair? or are you assuming that there would not be a counter to it? even if there wasn't a new alien introduced you could still managed an effective attack on it if the lerk was given lerk lift

example1: lerks transport xeno skulks onto the ship, then boom = larges amounts of damage.

Example2: lerks lifts regular skulks onto ship, skulk munches on ship/pilot, ship goes boom

Example3: lerk lifts Gorge onto ship (it wouldn't probably stay on very long though.. >_>) the gorge proceeds to web the engines or cockpit (decreasing pilots vision making it hard to fly)

theres 3 strategies right there not including the fade (although they would require more than 1 hive but if that have a dropship capable of carrying HA's and you just have one hive you were screwed to begin with)

And to the people wanting a Ranking system? you claim vehicles will ruin teamwork then what the heck will a rank system do? numbers of frags != teamwork either guys and all it will do is bring in people who just want big numbers beside their name. that ruins the feel of NS more than anything else IMO.

Playing with a noob can turn into a rewaring experience, if you take him under your wing...

Tell him to stick with you and teach him... even by him following he wont cause trouble and will know what to do... after 20 mins or so, you now have a friend that will scream in joy the next time you see him and a competant player...

A good veteran and seasoned player earned this title and takes it upon him to teach new players... oh sure you dont get over 100 frags... but that isnt the point, there is co for that...

A training level isnt the top priorety... What makes a game good? its comunity... and what kind of a game is there if the veterans are close minded and hate the new players...

For aliens, they as well can have viecles...

Some sort of alein gunship: The basic chassis is droped by a gorge/building, players who want to pilot it will have to morph to a "pilot" class life form, a small but extreamly fast one with less hp then a skulk... Then when it goes into the ship it morphs with it, Same for people who want to mount some sort of turrets...

If not, just a bigger version of a lerk... like i said before Evolution degrees... By the end of its degree a lekr would be able to pick up small things...

Rember we don't have to stick to 3 hives... mabe there can be 3 hives... and a queen hive?

In indoor maps, obviously you wont have enough room to drop a factory producing veicles, and it would cost too much since the res flow on a station is slower then on a planet. And you won't have enough room to evolve into the biggest life forms.

The closest poll feature is the one regarding more marine technology. I'd like to see a greatly expanded tech tree on both sides to include more strategy and thinking. Right now, there's essentially a prescribed formula on how to play the game when you get to the more serious levels. I don't like this.

Btw I would just like to add that to all you guys who are saying that HAVING VEHICLES DOESN'T MEAN MASSIVELY HUGE TANKS...

Look... the voting option is suggesting a lot more than that. It says vehicles and outdoor maps. We are talking about a massive change in gameplay here. Even if the vehicles were skateboards the fact that it's on an outdoor map suggests long range combat, and the only alien that supports long range combat is the lerk with its area effect spores and umbra. There would have to be a large modification to the alien forces to balance this out. And this would drastically change NS as we know it.

Now I have a WAY OUT idea that might balance it out but I don't know if you guys would like it. The only successful outdoor scenario I can think of would be something like Starship Troopers. Now give me the floor for a minute here.

The only way the aliens, or bugs as they were referred to by the marines, were able to compete was with massive numbers of melee fighters and efficient long range targeting systems. The aliens totally outnumbered the marines and that's the only way it was balanced due to the marines long range weaponry.

So if we were to take NS outdoors I would suggest a few new aliens.

Brain Alien: This alien could control up to 10+ heavily armored drones, specify formations and different attack methods. These drones would not be babblers, they would be heavily armored, powerful, and totally manuverable by the brain alien like a turret is controllable on a tank by the tank operator. Regular drone classes would be skulks, lerks, fades, and onos. You can select your drones at the start. You could have say either 15 skulks or just 3 onos; it depends on what class you choose.

Super Drone: This would be the rambo, it would wait behind the drones of the Brain Alien and look for an opening where it could get close to the human ranks. It would be three times more powerful and more armored than a regular drone. The drone classes would be skulks, fades, lerks and onos.

Bomb Aliens: These aliens would be NPCs that the alien team would give birth to with enough res. The would sit behind alien lines and bomb any areas with concentrated marine tech with massive area effect damage. They would be slow moving and the Digging Gorge could give it way points.

Digging Gorge: Hives would have to all be underground caves and there would be possible dig spots marked out on the map. These hives would have to be dug out by some kind of modified gorge.

If you made the above modifications only then would I see vehicles on outdoors maps as feasible. But like I said before, it would be a MASSIVE change in gameplay.

But I dunno, what do you guys think of the idea? It's not mine, I just got it from Starship Troopers so feel free to run with it.
• ShinzonShinzon Join Date: 2003-07-25 Member: 18407Members
out door maps arent deserts... they could be a heavily densed rainforest... with enough cover to make the marine range advantage useless...

Though i do agree with the veicles... for NS:S all i would whant to see is some sort of mountable turret... (new marine tech) and new aliens (means new alien tech) That should be the focus... after that the developers might whant to explore a bit to see how things could be in NS2... unless its being developed by a compleatly new team...

But even new marune tech would require alot of balancing out, just as much and not if more as veicles.

I would like that option to be kept open, and not blammed from the start.

The source engine allows for much bigger terrains, and JP won't be enough, HA's are too slow...

Though with the new physics engine, I would first like them to see take full advantage of that, then after everything has been made for source to start and explore...

Mabe it won't be the official devs who will add veicles, but servers will sureley try and do something about it...

I like them all kthx.

Ever since 1.0x I've wondered why they bothered putting a scope on the LMG, an alternate fire that let you actually use it would make my day, so I vote that.

I haven't waded through the mass of replys to this thread, I just scanned them.

Some of them were in tune with what I'd like, and some were not.

Flayra, I think your best bet is to stick with what you've got and augment it a bit. No huge changes (vehicles, for instance). There are a couple of things that are good already, and would positvely affect the entire idea of Natural Selection if vastly improved upon:

1. Atmosphere. Natural Selection has buttloads of potential in this area, and the Source engine has the tools to provide it with. This is always a hard one to peg down though, some games suck just because the interface is bad. If you could pull off something that felt like Doom 3 and had tons of those "that's really cool" interface features, you'd be doing really good.

Lots of times people overlook this area simply because it's trivial when compared to the game mechanics, netplay, etc etc, but think for a moment about the games you've played that had a slick interface - something that knew what you wanted and made it easily accessible, AND had bells and whistles to go along with it.

Things like having the right-click menu *scroll* instead of just appearing.
Things like digital ammo display counters on the side of the LMG.
Things like the lights flickering on and off or going out when you shoot them.
Things like animated kill icons.
Things like multiple model animations for the same weapon reload, or even random ones.
Things like color changing motion tracking icons that indicate distance through the UV scale.
Things like the fonts used in game - a cool as hell font should never be underestimated.

I'm just throwing out random things here, but you get the point. Small things that people say "wow that's cool!" the first time they see it, and find themselves saying it over and over as they play the game more.

In short, atmosphere is affected by a lot of things, not just the lighting. Improve this and take advantage of the source engine, and you'll have a heckuva game already.

2. Variety. I have been playing NS since *just* before 2.0, and I've been commanding since a bit after that some time. I'm not making any claims of my skill or veteranship or anything like that, I'm simply saying that I've done everything there is to do commanding wise.

What's your point Locane? My point is, the marine tech tree has the potential for HUGE variety, what with all the ideas on the I&S forums. Provide the game with multiple and extremely different paths of conquest, and you'll ensure replay value.

I'm talking about weapon variety. I'm talking about technology variety. I'm talking about having your options limited only by the amount of res you have. Something similar to assigning talent points in WoW - you only have so many, and once you've gone far enough down one tree, there's no turning back.

I've said enough for now, I think. I fear to type out the rest of what I'm thinking because people won't take the time to actually read it, heh.

--Locane

maybe that could be something like infralaser-fancy-system-which-uncloacks-cloacked-aliens

alien tech...
BABBLERS ! BABBLERS ! BABBLERS ! BABBLERS !
and maybe even lerk spikes back..but those wouldn't hurt structures and damage would be 1-4

--
also after some thinking, outdoor maps could go on NS2..
However, i dont really mind will it be on NS:S or in NS2..as long as we get some !
