To specifically answer the original question:

Work out what your skills and interests are first. The army and the navy are comprised of millions of roles, from healthcare to law enforcement. What would you be doing if you weren't in the armed forces? Chance are, there'll be a similar role available in one of the two, if not both. For logistical reasons, the army would probably have a broader range of professions.

A lot of your service will be coloured by the unit you serve with. If most of your unit are from Louisiana and you are an effete white gamer, you might not have that much fun. On the other hand, if you were part of a radar operator team, you'd probably be surrounded by other geeks in a similar situation.

Grendel, the only time humanity will not need soldiers is when we all think the same exact way. War > being mindless, barely sentient drones.

<span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'><b>barring posts made by Renegade, BadKarma, and other people who know what they're talking about, the **** stops here. buddy, if you're serious about your consideration of these military branches, take this post to heart, because it's comin from mine.</span></b>

well i decided not to read everything posted here because, obviously, not everyone is qualified to answer. filter the posts; listen to Renegade and BadKarma and the like but make sure you can tell who's an armchair jockey getting their postcount up when you've asked a serious f*ing question about what to do with your life.

    "better" is a subjective term.

first ask yourself what you want to do:

    -fight
    -desk job
    -adventure without fighting
    -sailing
    -working near home

what kind of job do you want?

the difference between the Army and the Marine Corps is in the composition of the branch and what each is capable of. the Army, put simply, is much bigger than the Marine Corps. round their numbers and they're about a million strong. the USMC has under 200,000 servicemen/women. there are many more available non-combat professions in the Army, if you want one.

also, one <b>opinion of uninformed civilians</b> is that a Marine is > a soldier, but that is bullsht. i've been enlisted and waiting for my recruit training for almost 12 months. i ship June 27th to MCRDSD, Marine Corps "boot camp" in San Diego. i've had a lot of these discussions, and i know now that we're all on the same flipping team and it's pointless ****. yes, it's fun to have this friendly rivalry when you're <i>in</i>, i suppose, but <b>make sure you understand that when you're deciding what to do with your life, this rivalry is irrelevant.</b> soldiers and Marines, each within the Army or the USMC, work a multitude of different jobs. the gung-ho, high-speed/low-drag specops covert black op types exist in both forces and perform jobs that are the same, and some that are different. there is only ONE fair and balanced contest of fighting ability i know of that takes place between the various services and units in the US military, which is a national military sniper competition. the USMC snipers won it. a possibly more informed opinion is that the USMC's snipers are the best in the world, or up there, at least. does this mean you can't be an excellent sniper in the Army? hell no. it's just a contest.

years and years ago, the Army and Marine Corps did very different things. the Marines were purely for amphibious assault, as well as shipboard duty with the Navy, while the Army did the vast majority of the landfighting. today, thanks to GWB and others, they're both very seriously committed to the Middle East (which is obviously not an amphibious operation).

i've talked to a lot of Marines but also a sizeable number of soldiers. most of them are not/were not the specops type, but simply a Marine or a soldier. many of them had been in combat, hard combat. one Marine i knew was victim to 4 explosions of various types, two of which resulted in concussions, during the November assault on Falluja. it was HE who told me that although i might, in some part of my mind, aspire to be a sniper or a recon Marine or go to Ranger school, etc, he was just an infantry Marine and it was everything he ever wanted in honor and service.

the only gripe i'd have with joining the Army is their stop-loss system of sending soldiers back to the M.E. immediately after they'd already done a tour or more. it works differently in the Marines in some way. you should ask someone about that, someone who knows.

good luck, man. feel free to hit me up at any msgr if you want to pick my brain.

well i could say something but it's not really appropriate for this thread, and i'm a little more paranoid about all that don't-ask-don't-tell BS as the time comes closer.. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> one of the only things i really really don't like about what i'm getting into.

***another thing: USMC boot camp is, by and large, harder than Army basic. if you've ever seen any documentary about either, it's kinda plain to see. believe me, i'm not speaking from bias. the fact that the drill instructors (DIs) in USMC boot camp aim to dehumanize you and strip you of your civilian life really shows. within the first few days, recruits are tense, and scared.. scared straight. in army basic, footage from one of the latter phases literally showed recruits standing around in a "formation" looking like they were waiting for the bus. i don't know what to tell you about that. i know a soldier who went Airborne simply to get above and ahead, and of course, he **** loves it. he thought that being normal infantry in the Army was "nasty". i obviously can't speak from experience on any of this, i'm just relating what i've seen/heard.

either way man, gather as MUCH information as you can from as many reliable sources as you can. talk to BOTH recruiters. it doesn't hurt.

some people here are so full of sh*, keeps it fresh in my mind why i started lurking :\

<b>"the Marines are always in the action, they send you straight to the fighting, blah blah blah i don't know WTH i'm talking about"</b>

wrong. you can work in logistics, intelligence, law, law enforcement, firefighting, i shouldn't even have to NAME the ****ing non-combat jobs if you (not gonna say any names FUNBAGS) are honestly going to join the Corps. i really hope you don't honestly believe what you posted. i'm sorry to be harsh but you're making a big mistake if that's how you see things.

for the record, an army Ranger could probably kick a Marine Corps reservist supply clerk's ****. and a Recon Marine could probably give a pretty serious beatdown to a similar non-combat soldier. the "my daddy could beat up your daddy" stuff is the wrong way to be thinking about things.

Ranger Corps is the US Fast Response Team...lightweight, fast, and hard hitting. Meant to get in first and hold till the main forces arrive

At least, that's my understanding of em.

Damn Zig, with that sort of motivational post I thought you would have been LONG gone into recruit training. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

As for the Army stop loss vs. the Marines, its very simple. Army puts you in to the thick as often as they like. Marines have had a float/deployment schedule for decades that hasnt changed much. I dont see it changing much in the future. We spend 6to14 months deployed depending on your job, out of every 2-3 years. Since I work with the Air Wing we usually go for 6 months out of every 2 years. And its very profitable, but fast paced.

Bottom line is every branch will probably have something that is going to be right up your alley. The only cavet I can think of to this is the medical field which mean you would avoid the Marine Corps.
