Battlefield 2 Demo: Gameplay

The officially unofficial BF2 thread
I figured we need a seperate thread to discuss gameplay aspects of BF2, as opposed to the current one which contains about 10 pages of people still trying to get the download.
So... what's the consensus?
I like it. A lot.
What say ye naysayers?

I usually play engineer or medic and its much fun to keep your buddies or vehicles alive. It really counts to have support classes with you, otherwise your drivables are easily destroyed.
So Gameplaywise its very much fun.
Graphically its gret either, even with medium settings on 1024 (the most my system can handle without stutters). THe only flaw are the ragdoll models, wich react absolutly horrible (model and skin is great, but when they are dead ) even people in prone position suddely fly through the air
Soundwise i really like the sound of the vehicles, copters and jets, the guns sound a little underpowered but fine.
Battles are too short and not tactically enough (too cs like) since you only need a few bullets to kill even though they wear kevlar.
I would´ve liked it if there were more drawn out battles, everyone hiding behind something, covering fire, ect.
Currently its just running around the plane, spotting someone, prone, shoot, run farther.
Overall i´ll give it an 8/10, wich could be easily 10/10 if the ragdolls were ok and the combats were longer and more exiting
Ding. We really need a server we could all play on.
Mega QFT.
I am in love with BF2. Once I got it installed and configed, I connected to a server and started playing. I look up at the clock and all of a sudden 6 hours has gone by and I forgot to eat dinner. I haven't done that with a game in a long, long time.
I absolutely love flying the jets in this one. I'm still only okay at it. I can usually pwn people in dogfights, but I suck at hitting stuff on the ground.
P.S. If you wanna remove the 10 minutes of intro movies that are annoying as hell, follow these directions:
1) Go to C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2 Demo\mods\bf2\Movies
2) Delete/Rename all files EXCEPT menu.bik, menu_loggedin.bik, and noise.bik
Now you can skip all those annoying ones. Hooray! :D
I'm having a whale of a time so far. I really enjoyed BF1942, but medics just weren't that great; you died in a few hits anyway, so it's not like you could make much of a difference. The BF2 medic is soooo much more satisfying.

I’m a Battlefield 1942 veteran, I played the demo when it came out and I played the game extensively along with its mods. When I first heard about BF2, I thought “Great, another licence EA is going to milk”. Even the screenshots didn’t attract me much. It seemed like Desert Combat all over again. It was only when I saw a gameplay video that I started believing this game could have potential. Now that I’ve tried it, I’m glad I was all wrong. This game is amazing. It makes one of my favorite games even better.
I started by launching a single player game. This aspect seems much like the first opus, it’s basically multiplayer but with bots. The first thing I noticed were the graphics: amazing! My computer is not all that great: AMD 2800+ and Radeon 9600XT, but BF2 really pushes the limits on it. I can set everything around medium/high quality and it’s incredibly beautiful. The player models are especially well done and the textures are nice all around. The environment has a very realistic quality to it, and moving around in it just feels right. I found that setting the antialiasing to 4x gives everything a smooth glow that makes objects seem that much more convincing.
A lot of the issues I had with BF1942 are fixed. The dynamics of infantry-based combat are much more interesting than they were before. I think this is a result of more thorough level design. The gameplay is now a lot more 3-dimensional even though this was already the principal quality of the first episode. This creates even more radically different types of experiences depending on what vehicle you are driving or what class you are playing. I feared that the new standpoint of the game, desert warfare, would make developpers a bit lazy, because face it, it’s the freaking desert. But again I was wrong. In the demo map, you have elaborately detailed buildings, cranes and other stuff that modify your outlook not only on a horizontal scale but also a vertical one. This is very important for the interaction between two fundamental parts of the battlezone, land and air. Now helicopters have a much more difficult task maneuvering through urban areas, but also gain much needed cover from airplaines. The level design in BF1942 was very linear, due to the prefab buildings making up most of the scenery. From the little I can see in this demo, the developpers seem to have grown out of this considerably.
Small details are the key to any good game. Tanks no longer stumble over small rocks which was one of the stupidest bugs in BF1942. Ducking for protection in the turret of a land vehicle is fun. The HUD of air vehicles is now much more informative, I especially like the little view on the helicopter showing the direction your secondary gunsman is pointing in. The water looks a lot better, though I find it too bad that reflective shaders were not implemented. Helicopters have been dumbed down a lot (compared to DC and even BFV) which makes them a lot more accessible unfortunately. However mastering their every movement is still a quality that is essential to posses for pilots who want to fare well in urban areas. Scalable maps are pure genius. Seeking missiles are pretty cool, but I’m impressed they actually built in flares to counter them. I haven’t taken much time to inspect the commander mode yet.
Overall this game feels like a very polished DC with a lot more features, better graphics and enticing gameplay for any type of player. I will probably further discuss this demo when I get to play it more.
Oh and hi Snidely, I was on the same server as you (as Rubert)!
Aaaah, it was you! I did wonder. (:
Its VERY accurate. Only on the laggiest servers is it bad: Otherwise, perfection at it's most...perfect, degree.
A) I flipping hate people.
i.)THERE ARE SQUADS FOR A REASON, YOU MORONS. IF YOU JOIN A SQUAD YOU CAN SPAWN WHERE YOUR SQUADLEADER IS WHEN YOU DIE. THAT IS A USEFUL ABILITY. MAKE THE MOST OF IT.
ii.) DEAR COMMANDER: IF YOU DECIDE TO USE ARTILLERY ON A SPOT WHERE A PITCHED BATTLE IS RAGING PLEASE REMEMBER TO FLIPPING WARN YOUR GOD DAMN SOLDIERS BEFOREHAND.
B) Antitanks.
When I'm playing as an antitank soldier, I feel dirty. I'm pretty damn good at infantry combat, and I can manage to kill a tank. I like that antitanks aren't depenedent on their teammates for efense anymore, but I simultaneously don't like that. But I have to say, the benefits of an antitank class which is able to defend itself outweigh the negative aspects.
C) I <3 medicery.
You can heal yourself, you're decent at infantry combat, and you can revive people. I almost always play as a medic.
D) Ground Vehicles
Fun to drive, but if I'm caught by an American tank I generally get sodomized. Oh well, that's BF1942.
E)Air Vehicles
I like how although the helicopter can carry more than one person, one person always runs up to it and flies off, probably thinking to himself something along the lines of "LOL I JUST BEAT THOSE OTHER NUBLARS TO MAH PLAEN". I can fly a helicopter rather decently, which is a welcoms surprise, given Desert Combat's...intriguing control scheme.
F)Parachutes.
Ehehehehe I can steer them. A wonderful little detail.
G)Sea vehicles
Poor boats, everyone forgets about them. Hell, nobody ever looks to the water for an attack on the construction site.
Don't get me wrong, I LIKE the game. It's just that, as usual, people suck. Oh, and (this is more a problem on my part than anything else but) BF2 is in fact not the Second Coming of Christ Himself. It's a nice game, but nothing pants-blowingly awesome.
I like sniping the best by far. I'm a pretty patient chap so I have no qualms about sitting in some obscure bit of scenery for 20 mins to get a good shot at someone. This one guy really didn't understand the fact that charging down a field at a sniper is not a good way to kill him. I killed him six or seven times, including one time when he snuck all around the edge of the map to pop me from behind. I whipped out my silenced pistol and put a couple rounds into his noggin. The snipers also get claymores they can set up in front of doors leading to thier favourite sniper nest.
I like. I'll be buying.

You can kill people with those things, y'know.
the firs thting is a trophy, id imagine that is capture points. the second, i dont know what is, then its kills, then deaths then latency i would assume.
ShackForums to the rescue!

Host starts a new single player game
The other player starts a new multiplayer game and manually adds hosts ip
(the ip can be local or internet)
Host connects and can plays a nice game of co-op with bots.

While you're at it, you may want 32 bots instead of 16.
Here's how to bind those unbindable keys:

And some more tweaks here.
Commander - Squad Leader
Squad Leader - Squad Members
Player - All/Team Players (Server Controled)
The Rag Doll Sucks bug time, with my GeForce FX 5500 everything looks great, but those Rag Dolls suck.
Vechical Explosions SUCK BIG TIME, really, you crash/get hit, and theres your vechical hull, then bam, its gone... Really lame. Though its hard to make a Vechical Dissapear with some kind of "Koolness" what they used sucks.
Sounds are great execpt for the Soldiers guns. To weak.
Gameplay is the best ive seen since, forever, this is one of the best gameplay games ive ever seen. If you Rambo, great, sometimes Ramboing in and taking out Enemy Comms is great, Squad based \m/ ROCKS \m/!!!!!
Ingames Flight, well lets just say, OMG ROXOR IT IS!!!11!1ONE!!1 I love the Cobra/AH 1Z, teh F-35B is my second choice, i cant wait to see whats in the full version. Ima pre-oder/buy as soon as i find 50 bucks.
Rating 9/10, easlly 10/10 if the rag doll/chat was fixed.
Uhh, yes they can. I played a game last night where all 6 guys had VOIP. It was uber awesome too.
For some reason nobody can hear mine though...
At first, I thought it was the new 5.6 drivers I downloaded, but even after I rolled back to 5.5, I still got the freezes. Help?
I tried putting the Omega 5.4s on, but that just made her hard-lock instead of dump to the desktop.
That said, this game is awesome, but only when there is teamwork.
Another guy and I used an Apache to level offensive after offensive on a server before my inevitable crash. We got behind the hotel, would pop up over it, get a look at where their tanks were, then sink down behind it. He'd fire missiles _around_ the damn hotel, and bullseye tanks 200 meters away. When the MEC started moving on our position, we just popped up, sprayed the missile tubes at the tanks, and he used the chaingun to mow down all the infantry. We ran out of ammo _4_ times before a jet got wise and took us down.
It was glorious.
Can anyone using a 9600 or earlyer comment on their stability?
Also, it looks like people are working on a way to open up the 32 player version of the map to Single/Coop play! wewt!

Im using a Radeon 9500, with Catalyst 5.5 drivers, its been completely stable for me.
Repost from other thread.
Commander mode is so cool. Airstriking flags before having your minions rush in is great. I always go engi so I can hop out and repair the Artillery.
To get rid of the headless chicken feel, Start up your squad(Caps Lock) and invite random people. Then give them orders (caps then right click on map) on what to attack. Most newbies will run to where they are told.
Couple of rounds leading my squad around, we would cap the entire land mass and the start launching boats out to hit the crusier. It's so sweet storming the ship with a bunch of squad mates.
