For the same price of a 9800 you can get a 6600GT. Therefore, you go with the 6600GT (They do make those in 256MB AGP size as well but the price goes up a few bucks (20-30).
The nice thing with high end cards, AA and AF. On top of being able to play (probably quite well) some of the next generation of games, you can boost AA and AF to your heart's content with a 6600GT or simmilar card. Run your monitor at high resolution and use AA and AF if you can, it just looks nicer. Theres no point in having more than 100 fps, because you can't tell the difference, so make the image look nicer.
The 6800LE from what I can tell is AGP, and slightly less expensive than a 6800. If you really want better graphics than a 6600GT, for the price of a 256MB version you can pick up a 6800 (non-LE) which runs 25 MHz faster core than the LE <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->. But for that price it may be more useful in the future to have more graphics memory, so I think the 6600 GT is still the best bet. From what I've seen, the PCI-E 6600 GT is only maybe 20 bucks more than the AGP version, but almost all have the additional 128MB of memory, so its maybe 30 or 40 bucks more than the 6600 GT 128MB AGP.
O and this winniest....the 7800 GTX came out in the last week. :O
PS, technically, they do make AGP versions of the x800 XT PE, but i agree, there isn't much of a point (especially with a new generation popping its head around the corner).

On older cards it actually makes sense. There was a time when the video bios was identical for each memory size, and since the larger memory required more adressing space (but more time since the adress width was not large enough) that larger memory would slightly underperform other cards. Now, the memory speeds up load times and some stuff with more high res textures, but for the most part has nothing to do with FPS.

No it's the same card, same memory, only they're putting less chips. For example, 4 chips on front, 4 chips on back for 256 MB, or they only put the front chips for a 128MB
