I've seen other communities do this with HL mods recently so i figured it would be interesting to see what the NS community of mappers are capable of.
Rules:
1) Must be only a small area or room of one of the official NS levels. Don't try to reproduce whole levels, think small like a neatly lit hallway or looking out a window with a 3d skybox and source displacements.
2) Level design does not have to be a brush by brush reproduction of the room, but the overall size, scope and "feel" of the room\area should stay consistent with the original.
3) MUST use half-life2\CS:S textures or other custom textures\models. Also check the "source texture remake project" to see if there's any that you want to use. Basically, you cannot use the original low quality ones in NS.
3) Must be compiled with the Source SDK and screenshots released in this thread. A good image host is www.imageshack.us. Before and after shots are required on the final entry. Something like a collage of before and after would be an idea, or just have a side by side sort of thing .
4) Contest has been extended till August 19th!, let see what you got! At the end of the contest I can probably get this turned into a poll and your final submission screenshots should have your forum name on the picture(s) somewhere so we can vote for the winner. The winner receives eternal praise and free condiments (ketchup and mustard only) for life. Also a giant cookie might be included, and I mean GIANT!
Some sample area screenshots for ideas:

For those that do not know Ominous Kismet is the area below (from ns_nothing). I chose it because it has some nice lighting and I like Ken20Banks's style.
- texlights dont work the same way they do in the hl1 engine. in hl1, the light would be casted from the surface of the texture in the front, and the back which gave it more of a realistic lighting effect.
in the source engine, it only casts light one way, so the light will appear to come out of nowhere and look very odd.
- textures are 1/4 the size of most source textures, not that it matters, because most source textures are scaled down to the same size as hl1 textures anyways, they just have a bit more detail.
- if your porting textures to source, its very difficult to get the textures to look right. unless you want to use $lightmappedgeneric which looks plain.
otherwise good luck
No NS textures,so cross that point off Giga! My Ominous Kismet area is mainly made of light entities and not texlights so it shouldn't be too hard to do as I want and close to the original..
I have been out most the afternoon/evening but I spent 15 minutes on this piece of junk...
Atmos!

Also to note those doom3 screenshots of eclipse don't look good :-P.
I've been "busy" the past day or two but gonna try to finish my little hallway tonight or tomorrow.
Having geometry just waiting for textures is, I would imagine, really good inspiration for texture artists to make new content.
Well I'm glad you're glad. ^_~
There havn't been any updates for Black Mesa mendy... what's the deal? Stop mapping?

I'm not really sure if that's within the boundaries of the contest or not, I just had to spruce things up a bit. btw, I really think you should put an end date on the contest, if that is truely what this is, a contest.
:edit: yes Naigel, I definetly miss my patches, but there was a texturing thing I was able to do because I did *not* use patches, so I guess it's both good and bad. I still I wish Source had patches though...
:edit: WOO! <3 Ayumi
What are patches?
