Unfinished Games

you ever buy a game you don't finish?
soo I'm bored (as stated in another thread), and I'm looking through my collection of games and realizing how many I haven't finished. I'm having deja vu right now - I may have started an identical topic months ago, but I forget... anyway, am I the only one who buys games and ends up not completing them? it's not like I'm talking about crap games either - Deus Ex, Baldur's Gate, Morrowind, Arx Fatalis, Fallout 2, System Shock 2, No One Lives Forever 1 and 2, the list goes on...
the reason I end up not finishing good games is usually that I'm too much of a perfectionist. I'll start playing through the game and then realize I missed something. the thing may or may not be critical to completion of the game, but because I'm so anal, I'll start over and do things a little differently. Then I'll realize I missed something ELSE, or decide I should have chosen a slightly different stat build or something, and I'll start over AGAIN. then I'll start getting bored of playing through the beginning of the game again and I'll just put it aside... it's a dumb pattern but I get caught in it.
anyway, anyone have a similar problem (or advice for me)? =P

best games of our time and you havent finished them? go hang yourself
However, games like Baldur's Gate 2, Neverwinter Nights, D&D based games with so many character possibilities... those are what I have trouble with. I go through it with char A and then say, "I want to try char type B now" and go back and restart (because I never do more than one at a time for some reason), then I go, "I want to try char type C now." Over and over and over again... then I get tired of replaying the first few hours of the game so many times and get bored and stop playing.
Right now though, I'm sort of in a transition with video games. I don't play as much as I used to, nor have the interest to. Only for NS . For last xmas, I got a bunch of money (as usual) and bought some games and gaming accessories. List of games include for the GCN: Tony Hawk's Underground, Metroid Prime 2, Bloodrayne, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. And for PS2 I got Final Fantasy X-2. Out those games, the only one I beat was THUG, and about 6 times now. I have my guides for MP2, Zelda:WW, and FFX-2, but I'm just not as interesting in games anymore. Recently took it upon myself to finish at least MP2 because I was waiting so anxiously for it, and I'm almost done.

deus ex: it bothered me that I couldn't satisfy both the guy who gives the ammo by not killing anyone, and the augmented humans by killing people... I like to be able to meet everyone's standards!
SS2: I got to the very last area I believe, but I think I saved over my quick save file or did something similarly stupid...
fallout 2: started playing it, but experienced some bugs that destroyed my game, so gave it up
baldur's gate: got halfway through it but had to return the CDs to a friend
arx fatalis: got rather far but started getting annoyed at the lack of variety of enemies, especially compared to the game it was made in homage to - Ultima Underworld 2, my favorite game of all time... still, I consider Arx to have the best voice acting I've ever heard.
Morrowind: I forget why I quit it, but it probably had something to do with the fact that I was trying to get max stat increases at every level and it was a real chore...
bah.
Similar problem, although not so bad as you. And I have the solution to your (and my) problem.
When you start a new game, start out planning to play it twice. (Assuming its a decent game of course, if its bad you can always quit half way through with no problems.) The first time through, don't bother with completing every sidequest and getting every stat boost and inventory item, just get to the end of the game and enjoy the storyline. Along the way, you'll learn the game mechanics, and how best to abuse them to make more powerful characters/make life easier on yourself.
Then, start over, using what you learned the first time to do everything right from the start. THIS time, you can spend time tracking down every hidden item and sidequest if you still want to, and you can even refer to walkthroughs without ruining the story, since you've already seen the story.
This same basic pattern works pretty well whether its an RPG (say, a Final Fantasy game) or an FPS (say, Doom III) or anything in between.
Got up to the bit with the mutants, and from there on couldn't be bothered.
I HATE the guy you play as in that game. He's too stupid.

Only when your in first person.

that sounds like it might just be crazy enough to work :>
A load of 'em other than that, but I'm too lazy to put 'em down. <3
There's this real fun multiplayer ARPG for the Playstation (which can multitap up to 8 players zomg) that I never bothered to finish...due to the fact that my brothers and sisters are rather incompetent at ARPGS, save for 2.
Also didn't finish a few on PC. I guess I haven't finished HL and SS2 yet, but SS2 gives me the hibby-jibbies. Damn woman-robot things!

I'm surprised I managed to finish KOTOR1, because it's the sort of game I could see myself getting hung up on playing perfectly...
I wanted to play it again and take the dark side route, but my conscience wouldn't let me play a char who kills and mugs innocents every 2 seconds =x
I was playing Morrowind today and realized why I never finished it: Boring =X
Some games start out strong and eventually lose their appeal, some don't have a very compelling story, some have unlucky, frustrating stuck points, and some you get right before you get a new Zelda game. All of these contribute to having unfinished games, at least in my case.
There's also the case of the game being in a language you don't understand, which is why I have yet to progress in Shenmue >.>

The issue from there is the fact that who the hell wants to come back to something thats annoying and frusterating? I mean, regardless of how fun the rest of the game may have been, why would I want to play the annoying frusterating part?
Then after a while I just simply forget about the game all together.
startropics 2: zodas revenge
final fantasy X
painkiller expansion
blast corps....
tetris!
im just going to stop listing because if i go on with my console games the list will be pretty long...
omg I loved that game. I'm planning on rebuying an N64 and a bunch of games that I was too poor/my mom was too cheap to buy/rent (for PSX and N64), and that is in my list. I used to have it, and I beat it with 100%, but damn was it so much fun.
Let's get moving!
sacred (the worst game i ever bought)
Jagged Alliance 2's expansion pack (i forgot the name). i bought it bargin bin and never even installed it. heard it wasn't very good anyways
i have no intention to ever revist these 2 however.
i have not finished countless console games that i couldn't finish because of lack of skill cause when i played them i was a youngling . robocop for the orignal NES for one
Reason? It got a bit redundant, but I'm going to go back to it one day.
The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures
Why? I never have all my friends over at the same time with connector cables, which is about four people. But I'm starting to play it alone, not as fun, but still good.
What the hell? That's a classic. The first RPG I finished without using spoiler, in one week nonstop, just so addictive.
Right now, I never got the urge to finish Chrono Cross, Neverwinter night and Balder Gate(didn't even finish chapter 1), all RTS I bought except Shogun: Total War.
One game I just can't finish no matter how hard I tried... Dungeon Keeper 1. Freaking frustrating.
Other than that, I finished ever single games I bought.
Manhunt
Shogun: Total War
GTA:San Andreas
The only games I've completed are:
HL1
HL2
KOTOR1
Jak3 on the PS2
Vampire Bloodlines
Thats it, now if you consider I've been playing games for about 10 years now and own at least 50-60 plus a fair few at left at my parents house when I moved out...
IGI
RTCW
AvP2
GTA:SA
Games that used to run XP that no longer do:
System Shock 2 - my all time favourite game too
Planescape Torment - what i did play was good
Arcanum - it was REALLY good, I want to keep playing it
Rise Of nations - when this stoped working it puzzled the hell out of me
Few others
I suppose I could go play Morrowind, but I found that far to open and I got lost, maby when I get a good 2 days off of work with nothing to do, ill sit down and play it.
GTA:SA- much too long
summoner- lost interrest :/
WC3- got to the orc campaing mission with the trees, imposible mission
GTA:VC i think i beat it, but my friends said you had to kill that black guy? i never got that mission
Soldier of Fortune 1 + 2- the 2 was just too hard, in 1 i got stuck in a level.
baldurs gate- was too young to read some of the english text
turok- it scared me, i think i was 8
red faction- stuck again :/
hexen- too hard
i guess theres tons of more
