Just found this article today: <a href="http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,20926050-23109,00.html" target="_blank">Feet deadlier than a knife in a fight</a>
Rather illuminating, even if the paper does point out that there may be inaccuracies due to the lack of distinction between knives and other sharp objects, such as broken bottles. Still, it doesn't come as any surprise to me that kicking is much more effective than punching. First off, you are usually wearing shoes, while your hands are either naked or covered in gloves. Second, your leg muscles are many times more powerful.
My sports club ("gym" to you poor folk <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> ) is so huge it has an indoor track upstairs and an olympic sized heated pool. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />

Well, considering what most injuries are caused by, I'd say that a quick intelligent person can't catch the foot. Or that quick intelligent persons are not on the receiving end of beatings.

Actually, even with martial arts on black belt, most kicks aren't really effective. If you try some crazy 360 degree crescent kick(or also called spin kick), a 540 kick, tornado kick, and even a roundhouse kick, any high kicks, etc; you can easily be countered by just getting tackled quickly while you're performing your kick.
The second an opponent sees you turn your back, or sees you lift your leg up and preparing for a kick, they can simply just tackle you and interrupt you quickly.
A simple kick to the shins, or <b>low</b> kicks are much more effective, practical, and less risky than any high kick or any kick that requires you to turn around and increase power by spinning.
A kick to the shins can cause extreme pain to the opponent if performed well, other simple kicks actually do better than any fancy kick where you have to spin 360 degrees.
In real fights, it's better to stick with the basics, and what you know well than try any fancy punches/kicks. Although throwing, pressure point, grappling, submission techniques are really useful in certain situations, fancy kicks and punches are not and just give you an extreme risk of being countered.
The only way to truly be able to perform these fancy kicks in real fights(<i>where you have to fight for your life for example</i>) is if you're doing a combo of punches and low kicks, then do that fancy kick. That's also only if you can do the fancy kicks <i>extremely fast</i> and if the opponent is a little off guard.
For those of you who practice the fancy kicks on punching bags, someone's hand, trees, and <i>other stationary and non-attacking-attacking-back stuff</i>, well they're stationary and they don't attack back, so even if you're extremely good at breaking wood with your feet, it is still extremely risky to use it in a real fight.

There I have stated now a little known fact about myself publicly.
Personally I don't view the real karate as a fighting art. To me karate is a way of life -- a life philosophy or discipline.
...that is all I will have to say.
