It's pretty scary. I realize everyone's saying "it'll never pass", but check the facts. They've put so much money, effort and planning into this already that, at least to me, it seems like it's gonna come through regardless of whatever happens.

I'm half American, don't have a passport yet but I'm in the process of it. I sure am glad I don't live in the States yet.

This is news? There have been a series of quiet bills being pushed through congress since late 2001 (the first of which put forward by my state, NH's, own Bob Smith. Luckily he's gone now) to bring back the draft. Fortunately none of them have been passed until now. Frankly I think the chance of it happening is pretty slim, but I've been considering a move to Canada for a while now just in case.

College and Canada will not be options. In December 2001, Canada and the U.S. signed a "smart border declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's minister of foreign affairs, John Manley, and U.S. Homeland Security director, Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their current semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.

Why would the US *ever* go through all this hassle if it was near certain that this won't go through anyway? So much trouble for nothing? I don't believe so.

We'll see in due time, but I find it interesting that it's being kept quiet.

One more reason to convince any young adult you know to get to the polls and vote for Kerry: Their very life may depend on it.

The draft wouldn't suprise me. Both Bush and Kerry will want to be able to finish the Iraq war right, and that will likely mean more troops. I'm 16, so I will escape any draft unless Bush/Kerry decide that some more regimes need changing

Doubt it'll pass anyway, especially if Kerry is elected since he's known to be against such position. And if he did, he'd be crucified.

I still support the war in Iraq. Am I not part of the people?

Just because that's what you think, does not reflect the thoughts of "the people". Same goes for Bush too.

You're quite the optimist if you think the Iraq war will be over in 2 years time.

I'm glad that I live in Australia. Any Yanks who don't want to be drafted, you'd be more than welcome here.

Hmm, I actually don't think I can pass the military test. Well I can, but occasionlly I have heart problems so I may get lucky and be let go.

But I honestly don't think we need another draft. We have enough people in the service and it isn't like we are invading Germany or Japan again.

I'm not sure what the chances are, but the people in the US Congress are some sneaky mofos I can tell you that.

I suppose only time will tell with this draft bs.

How does the draft work anyways? Is it everybody who is 18 to what 25 and depending on if they are doing school or not they are instantly taken away? Forgot how it was, I believe my stepdad was almost drafted by the Marines, but he was already enlisted in the Army. lol

He enlisted for the army, but it wasn't his time to go in yet so that's why the marines tried to get him.

Well if we can find the bills in question we can settle that question. If the article did quote them correctly, then I don't see why Congress.org would be disreputable.

    1. I support the effort in Iraq.
    2. We're not losing troops at any kind of rate that would require a draft there.

I'm thinking this is prepatory work for something like if North Korea goes nuts and we lose half our armed forces in a single day.

Strangely, the article provided a link to the bill in question here , but this times out with no response. Now either this bill is a fabrication, the government took the site down, the site took so many hits that it shut down or my connection is dodgy. In any case, can anyone else hit it?

    EDIT: Ok, here we go

    Congress.gov

Can't get much more official than that

If they do bring back the draft, I'm going to go for the easiest route not to get drafted.
    I'm going to volunteer.
I'm not saying this as a joke about how they both have the same end result; on the contrary, everyone/thing I've heard/read seems to hint differently. People who voluntarily join the armed forces seem to be looked at more closely instead of being lumped with the "bunch of guys who didn't manage to dodge the draft." Example: I know a guy who was in the US marines for several years and insured that he'd never see front-line combat. How? This was decades ago when typewriters had no backspace key, in a job setting where speed and accuracy mattered along with security. He could type like an absolute storm and get it right, the first time, every time. He didn't need to be a genius. He needed to have a valuable, rare skill, and become noticed for it.
