I've got to the 2nd level of the recycling plant right now. So far, pretty impressed, but the fear level has dropped severly for me. Methinks it would be nice if the obvious "wow this must be a door that moves and an imp is behind it" or perhap the even more obvious "here is some free meds and ammo, but if you pick it up, something's going to hit you as you can't see it right now" were changed up a little more. It's still a little spooky, but after 8 hours, it doesn't phase you. Just like watching a scary movie the 5th time over. Not so scary, but you get a little jittery when you see it coming.
Goodies: a tribute to berserker mode is in there, where your punch insta-gibs everything. One of the chaingun ammo drops gives you a nice "thoughtless slaughter" round of imps and demon/zombie thingies. Oh. The riot shield sucks. I suggest grenades.

There is a rebirth mod for ss2 out there. Its not finished, but quite nice to play. It replaces the original models and and textures with better ones. Especially the Hybrids look fnatastic with the new models, really sacry! Although its not done, yet, still wip, but downloadable and playable
150 years in the future, lighting technology will have taken a severe downturn. Humans will have evolved newer, oversensitive eyes to adjust to the new, constantly dim light. Every human EXCEPT for the marine in this game, who just can't see a #$^%@#* thing.
The flashlight gimmick sounded interesting when I first heard about it, but the implementation is just annoying. Maybe if enemies didn't come rocketing across the floor at you. The 'scary' factor is quickly replaced by the 'annoyed' factor when I am given the choice of seeing (and thus being able to aim at) my target, and shooting my target. Find some martian duct tape and I'll attach the flashlight to the shotgun myself. If not for seeing your target, how about just seeing all the hard work they put into making this game look good? All the modeling and skinning wasted so that a zombie can be nothing more than a pair of glowing eyes in a pitch black room. GREAT!
Other problem: The tension. They tried to lay it on so thick that they ended up losing all of it. When EVERY room is gloomy with ambient sounds and a spinning fan shadowed on the floor, and is populated with three moaning zombies, two leaping imps, and a partrige from hell in a pear tree -- the scary is lost. There is no rising and falling climactic action. I realize this is doom, but the fact that it has the doom name on it doesn't mean it has to play like the doom of so many years ago. Frag everything in sight, push button to go to next level. Adding in some places where the player can feel 'safe' for a moment goes SO far towards creating good dramatic tension. You have to make him relax so that you can freak him out all over again. That's why the RE games had their safe rooms. That's why silent hill had the white misty silent hill (which was still scary as hell, but nothing like the evil silent hill... part of the genius of that game is that a freakish scary area actually can be considered 'safe' and 'relaxing' ... until a devil dog eats your face). That's why monster movies will let the characters escape into an alcove for a while to catch their breath while the monster plods off. You know he'll be back, but for the moment, you can let off a little tension.
This game is playing like a rollercoaster that just goes up and up and up and up. Where's the dips? Where's the rolls? Where's ANY VARIETY? Now I just walk into a room, instantly shoot the imp waiting at the door, turn and follow the wall around until I find a tiny room tucked in the wall, shoot the zombies there, then go search for the stuff that I'm supposed to find in this room.
All that complaining aside, it's still fun. Shotgunning zombies can't ever get old. The graphics are beautiful (even if I have to turn most of them off). The map design has me wanting to know how they did everything. It IS great fun. It's just not as amazing as I'd hoped after the long wait to get my hands on it.

I just beat it, and it was awesome all the way through. The "trap" at the recycling plant was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. You're plodding along, finally getting used to the "Safe... OMG MONSTERS... safe... OMG MONSTERS... safe... OMG MONSTERS" formula, you get 5+ minutes of constant action while you frantically search for a way to get rid of the gas that's filling up the area you're in. Tis the stuff of gaming legends.
That's one thing that makes Doom 3 so great - as soon as one place starts to get repetative, they introduce a new enemy, or completely change the level design and the way the monsters attack you.
baconflaps: downclock your graphics card, or if you're not oc'ing it, turn off any software mods you have applied to it (9500->9700 softmod for example).

Heh, when I first started reading BobTheJanitor's post I thought he was going to make himself look stupid by the end of it. Actually, he's dead on. After you wipe out a room though you could technically hang around until you've worked up enough courage to go to the next one. What Doom3 is going for is a neverending adrenaline ride; it works for a while but when you're blasting left and right and it doesn't let up after a while you start getting used to it. The worst thing that could happen is for the tension to be let down because the player has been overexposed...the game should actively control your tension level the whole way through and occasionally leave an empty room somewhere.
