I have a Microsoft wireless optical mouse, and it plays NS fine.
the only drawback is if it's moved REALLY fast (faster than you usually move it in NS) it'll "snap" to the corner of the screen maybe 2 out of 10 times. it's not a problem for me because I use high sensitivity (thus, slower movements make me spin faster than some people, etc).
remember, though, mine is WIRELESS. you should have fewer problems with a high-quality optical mouse.
Logitec mice have no noticable "latency" problems... unless you buy some old 5 dollar one from a used market or something... Most newer wireless mice fair pretty well unless your trying to play from 20' away.
$50 I use Wireless Logitech MX700 Duo (Includes KB). $10 Microsoft Optical Wired Wheel mouse has serious snapping issues. $5 Fry's Kensington Wired Optical mouse plays fine.

most mouse latency in HL is actually due to rendering problems, i remember in my old GF1 days i had massive problems with the controlls lagging some seconds behind. If you have problems with a new optical/wireless mouse, before you give up on it try changing your rendering settings (turning on Vsync or changing between direct3d and opengl rendering for starters) and then check your drivers. because like i said. new optical mice dont have to "twitch" and new wireless mice dont have to lag <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

Many don't realise the benefits of a USB mouse over a PS2 mouse, for starters, It's a lot faster.
As for mousewheel things, I have fastswitch on, and mousewheelup bound to slot 3, mousewheel down to slot 1. I'm using a mx510 and <a href='http://www.geocities.com/gpkgpk13/' target='_blank'>LogiGamer</a> which allows u to enable all 8 buttons to be used in NS. It works like a charm. I higly recommend that u use LogiGamer if u've got one of the newer logitech mouse. It allows you to set all sorts of individual settings for differant games and auto applies them when the game starts. Check it out.

mx 300-900 all have the same mx sensor and have the same speed without lag, wired mice are just 'unoticeable' faster then a wireless one unless you get a bluetooth one.
I use a logitech mx500 and its the best mouse I've owned thusfar. but even predescesors of the mx optical sensors (this includes none logitech to ofcourse) dont lag, they do however sometimes have tracking erros if you move the mouse VERY fast...

It was a utility that even worked its way into the official Logitech drivers a while back.
But even the most humble of USB optical mice can blow that rate away, obviously.

it is the new logitec (laser sensor), I just dont like it being wireless, not that wireless would have any impact on its performance. I said to a friend of mine that a mouse without a tail isnt a mouse... its a hamster, and who would play a game or operate his/her pc with a hamster ...

IF you use PS/2 mice you can double the 'fixed' refresh rate up to 200. It was a utility that even worked its way into the official Logitech drivers a while back.
But even the most humble of USB optical mice can blow that rate away, obviously.
