30 min old map ... early status!
Hi
I jsut wanted to let you knwo that i started mapping for Natural Selection .. Hopefully I'll stick with it.
Anyways my idea : A marine-base on a "jungle planet" is being infested by aliens ... ;-)
check out these little screenies of some things i tried.
( main part will be indoors but there are some outdoor areas too )

WOW thsi is the nicest outdoor scene using HL engine I ever saw!
HL engine is known for not beign able to make realistic outdoor scenes, but this loosk pretty damn fine
I'm not sure how you'll be able to fit thsi in the NS theme, maybe you could mkae a small outdoor area, or a greenhouse, yes you coudl make some sort of base, and they 'd have a greenhouse for food and air...

Wow, that looks sweet!
Something I think might be cool (and something that is radically different from most NS maps) is to have the map be set in a small frontier colony/town on another planet that's not abandoned, just completely empty. Let's say the TSA (marines) evacuated the town and sent in a crew to eliminate the alien presence before it spreads. I think that would be really pretty damn cool. Also, do you want a skymap for your map?

Edit - And now I notice your maine base idea . Sorry. I was too captivated by the screens

Thats very cool. I love the the textures for the plants.

I agree with infector about the outdoor areas being a bit suspect for gameplay, but the greenhouse idea sounds good.
It would be very nice to see this sort of vegitation inside as well, sorta like infestation from the planet (not the aliens) and then as you nearer the hives the vegitation dies off, getting replaced with alien infestation. Itd be a nice way to show how far you are from hives and such instead of using lighting and texturing like it says in the mapping guidelines.

There isn't any problem having outdoor areas if you have mostly indoors, is it?

Very nice. Welcome as a new ns mapper! Be sure to think about bob's wallclimbing and commanders mode as soon as possible.

Another cool thing 'bout the greenhouse is that you can use particle systems to simulate sprinklers......
well it's your map, so it's your call

One question: For commandermode, is there a visible 'grid' of the grass? If so, it wouldnt look too pretty. One solution would be a brush visible only to the commander that has a texture equavalent to lookign at a field of grass from the top down.

I agree with the whole biodome idea, although it may be hard to get it looking exactly right and the dewsign continuous when it switches between high-tech to grass and trees. Again, its your call, and its looking lovely so far.

That looks pretty cool, the mountain in the background is very convincing I'm sure you could expect people who play as Bob (the level 1 alien, about the size of a crouched marine) to hide in the grass. That'll make up for the fact that it's a wide open area. Any idea how the inside will look?

I've been hopeful that someone would try to make a contained vegetation area for some time.

one comment though, cattails grow in swampy areas; i didnt see water and those trees were not of the variety that would be able to live with water-soaked roots
• UnCriticalUnCritical Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 73Members, Constellation
Wurmspawn - the setting is on a 'jungle planet' it might not be the same as earth.

Ok

There won't be to many outdoor areas, since i want to retain the NS style. The inside ( once a bright living place ) is dark NOW ; only a few emergency lights are still running. There will be a complete living section as well as a small hangar and of course "hallways" .
I might post some new screenies of the completely redone area !!
Until then .. goodnight

the texture for the grass looks a little too generic though

other than that, good job

Looks great, but why is it the current trend to stray away from the guidelines and make nice outdoors areas for sake of straying away from the guidelines? To be different I suppose, but it isn't going to be very different if everyone is doing it.

Sorry for sounding so negative, The shots do look very nice. I just see a lot of outdoorsy stuff lately, and I have the feeling people are doing it because the guidelines say not to.

I could be wrong.

Breaking up the stuffiness of the indoors with the occasional smallish outdoors area can be a good thing. It just seems to be showcased a little too much. Whatever.

Looking forward to seeing more shots!

this looks REALLY sweet. I like the idea the most of the TSA entering an 'abandoned' base from the outside of the planet.
The thing i'm looking forward too which i don't know if its possible, but would be really cool is this effect; you know when its a bright sunny summer day, and you move into a house, from the outside you cannot see everything in the house (becouse its darker then the outside) and once you enter the doorway and you look at the inside of the house, you see everything much clearer.
This effect could be created by placing a brush in the 'doorway' (line between inside and outside) which is totally seethrough on one side (inside-outside) and great transparent with a brown/black texture. From the outside (i think if rendered additive) you cannot see things good on the inside, but the other way around works fine...

if you dont know what i mean i will make a sample map with this effect (hell im not even sure it will work myself) but i cannot do this now, because im at my fathers place instead of my mothers...

-

I dont like the idea of the 'planet infestation' because the habitat in there does not look like it will 'infest' and certainly not in iron or rocky environments (see the rocks on the background with no plants between/on them). You might want to add some loose rocks next to the 'rock walls' wich looks like real terrain.

Also i think the sky looks really fine now. I cannot see the whole sky, but this adds real athmosphere (at least in the pictures).

-

Although i think this is not the NS-styled map, i really think its a cool map, because its very original (and beautifull). I think NS must have some maps in it other then standard sci-fi, because this will encourage the 'wow' effect of ns. The only thing i can think of your map will fail in is the layout. Feel free to ask me if you want people to playtest it with.

Very interesting -- though the rock texture seems really far-off (skyboxish) and then all of a sudden intersects with this entrance to the facility. My mind wants to think that those are far-off cliffs from Serious Sam or something (probably due to the shadows in place on the texture), and then all of a sudden there's this door there that seemingly comes out of nowhere.

Also, the grass looks overly cartoony, in my opinion -- like something I'd (graphically) expect out of MonkeyStrike instead of NS.

Ken I mentioned this before when badmofo showed his very first pic of ns_sync, that time 3 or 4 people showed screens from bright areas, not outdoor, but very bright. I don't think bright and very big outdoor areas work that well in NS, even for the marinespawn I don't like it that it's really bright, it can, and must in some sense, be brighter then the rest, but I really like that contrast lighting, but he can use thsi thing i na greenhouse ( I know I really like that idea ), he coudl make it so that it's raining outside, lightning(?) that way soem nice particlesystems for the rain on the glassand maybe some inside for the sprinklers.............
• Shuvit_ViperShuvit_Viper Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 62Members
i agree with kungfusquirrel. In the first two pictures, you see the left side of the entrance looks good, but in the third picture i saw what he meant. The right side looks like the entrance was there BEFORE the rock, instead of the other way around...

i don't know about the mappingguidelines, but i think the outdoor areas gave some problems with the sky brush on the down side instead of the above side. Im not sure though. Its a problem Flayra is gone, he could say what to do. I definatly think you should continue on the inside area though.

Your textures are great! Is it ok if I borrow you grass-texture (if you send it to me)? I'm making a greenhouse in my map but I can't find any good textures for it.

ok
I guess I am gonna stick with the greenhouse-style.
Don't be afrait, i am NOT going to create to many outdoor areas !!
I spend some time and redid the area shown before ...

Excuse me while I mop up drool...

Absolutely the best looking NS screenies thus far (Not saying that others haven't been good; on the contrary, all maps posted here look better than any other mod). This map is just crazy-good!

Wow. First screens, I thought they were Serious Sam 2 pics
Second updated set, reminded me of Halo

It would be redundant to say i am amazed. I love what youve done. Seriously, I think the maps and the mappers skills may begin to overshadow the actually mod itself.

I really like what you've done in the second shot there with the greenhouse enclosure. It'll really take away the iffyness associated with marines jetpacking into the sky.

Or some more comments: Get a new sky. Talk to Chalupamonk if you don't have one already. You need something that can give off that kind of "nearing sunset" atmosphere. Because, yeah. That lighting is delicious.

wow.. thats awsome, i tried to do something like that, to have a swamp area in a map i was making, that would have fog in teh whole thing.. but it sucked so i got rid of it.. but that is awsome, gj

I really like that first shot in the second batch of screens. Reminds me of something...

I agree that a lighthouse area like this would be much better then not having any man made barriers. Great job.

IFA, you can post more then one shot in a post if you have your pictures hosted somewhere and use the "Image" button.

I hate to sound rude, but why are these the kind of maps everyone gets so excited about? I simply don't see 2D grass and trees as that amazing... Very nice, but it's nothing groundbreaking.

I'm more interested in seeing his indoors areas. That's what really matters if you ask me. That's what NS is.
