True, sometimes the AI DOES manage to do something spectacular.
    But...
I once threw a nade into where a combine soldier had just run to for cover, <i>and he chose to run outside to where i was</i>.

Apparently, the AI doesn't store information for any length of time which severely hinders it's effectiveness. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
It only takes into account the "here and now". However, if it could rember where i last was, assume where i was going, and then know where i wasn't, it could possibly be a <i>wee bit more</i> dangerous in it's movement patterns. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

IMO i think it well deserved it's insane 90 < x out of 100 score, as it gets VERY enjoyable (and probably diabolically evil) at the end of the game

Has there ever been a huge news item game like this that acctually lived up to the hype compleatly?

People complain about things like the fact that the top windows of buildings aren't breakable and whatnot... Give me a break, its a game. The sheer amount of work it would require just so you could break top floor windows isn't worth the developers time. Minor lighting and shadow errors or unbreakable windows are not a major deal. If you want real life then go outside, because games won't be able to replicate everything for a long while.

Haven't had much time to play so I'm only on Highway 17 and so far my only complaint is that the buggy handles like a Ford Escort running on rims.

So far, I'm not dissapointed at anything.

    Even CSS.

    I love it all ^-^!

I can say with a fair bit of confidence that I didn't do that. Yet after playing CSS, HL2 greatly surprized me and I found the gameplay and graphics absolutly asstounding and awesome. This is a game that did live up to the hype as much as any game ever will. Sure it wasn't an exact replica of reality, but in all honesty, it was a great game that I would recommend to anyone as a must buy.

I thought the game was everyhing i thought it would be. The graphics were not jaw dropping, but i would say they made the game play much more enjoyable... anyways i just beat hl2 and im stoked on some of my cool screenshots.. this is one of my favs

and out of curiosity, what was in the trailers, and cut from the game?

I like how you expect the AI to be super soldiers who never make mistakes. I'm sure there's been plenty of guys in real war who have run straight into enemies while getting away from a grenade- that's actually what grenades are meant to do.

Sure, the reason the AI does these things is the lack of capacity in coding, but it makes them more real in my opinion.

One thing I really was sorrowful to see not in the game:

The A.I is better than some are making out. For example, one of those 'hopper' mines was dropped infront of us and once activated, the friendly ncps scattered to avoid it's explosion. Also both the Antlion Guard and the Zombies throw objects at you, not scripted ones, any random object that in between them and you.

Also you have to admire the way the ncps can follow you almost anywhere, jumping down from ledges if needed.

I speant too much time building bridges and stuff with the G-Gun. On the sandtraps part, I spent at least a good half an hour building bridges, which I thoroughly enjoyed, just to find that all I had to do was jump over a little gap lol. I enjoy this phsyics part of it and I think the AI is better than I've seen in any game.

Whenever I had the squad with me, half the time I'd turn around and see 4 bodies on the ground and yell 'AH CRAP THEY DIED AGAIN!' I found it easier just to use them to distract the combine's fire while I go crowbar them in the face. Oh, and yes, I got very angry when I was about to shoot a watermelon at the combine and they shot it before I could throw it <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

I dont know if youve noticed, but doors opening towards you doesnt work too well in fpses. The door either gets stuck on you and you have to move back, or pushes you back with the strengh of God. It may not be 'realistic' but its a reasonable design choice

I loved the puzzles...they were actually cool and )aside from the pipes that didn't really look real (to curvy in weird directions)) realistic (...ish).

Like bringing the 30 gallon jugs into the little bucket under the ramp. Or stacking bricks to balance out the teetertotter thing.

Plus, even on my computer - where the textures look like crap - the water looks ohhh so awesome.

    A few disappointments:
The ending seems sort of like Halo 2's in the "What? That's it?" department...but it is fairly cool, though.

Audio stuttering, apparently a bunch of people are actually having this problem, so it's not just me...just one of those bugs they really should have caught, I suppose.

The E3 demo which was obviously faked now; especially since they don't even have the parts from the demo. I guess I'm just missing the being chased down a street by a strider.

There are barely any 2 path at a time parts. I only remember the one at the capital building, where you can choose which generator you want to deal with first...which was kind of disappointing, since it would have been nice to just wander the city a bit. On that fact: despite the linearity of the levels, sometimes it was a pain in the **** to find where to go next, which is a bit annoying.

...now, I've got to go see if that level editor is out yet, and go build my house with it (those houses on the beach were pretty cool...albeit copy and pasted with minor changes).

The part in the courtyard when you are taking on all those striders and have to find the box of rockets, that got on my nerves a bit. I wasn't expecint a large arrow to say that the box is here, but for god's sake, there coulda been a couple of NPCs that could have tried to lead the way. I died five times on that map before I figured it out. That's the only thing, a lot of the levels are pure chaos, and I like it. But you get turned around so freaking easily. Right now, I think I'm in the last chapter, chasing the administrator with the designated uber-weapon of the game. oooo yeah, that totally annoyed me. i ended up spending about 3 hrs outside on my own because i was too annoyed to paly it, so fury ended up taking me for a drive

    finished hl2 now

i must say my dissapointments was,

half the things you seen in trailers had been cut out, like the hydralisk blue tentacle, the 3 striders , the bust in the lab. i was sooo expecting to play those levels, i wanted to have more levels with ant lions and MORE yes, MORE aliens, the fishy one at the start you see you dont even come across anywhere ingame .. i wanted to fight more <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Not enough levels (to me there wasnt enough <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> )

some things like falling under the map when you got pushed hard enough.

other then that, half life 2 was bloody awesome game to play, i just wish there was more levels. I hope theres a half life 3 to complete this mystery about going in and out of worlds and this gman guy always watching you and that..

no in the trailer you were at the front of the gates and a strider smashed trhougha wall and chases a group of men, one even slams its foot into a guy and shakes it off, then another comes from around a side of a house and you could pull off the labels off a bank and throw them at the striders. that part wasnt in the game, i know because you go down an elevator to get the the area and walk past those black walls.
