Physx Ppu

<div class="IPBDescription">Next gen hardware?</div> Physx is like a CPU or GPU but named PPU, it calkylates all the physics leaving less strain on the GPU.
So much more realistic crashes they can make with this. Planes fall apart rather then just go boom.

    Meh, dunno...
The thought of having a completely new set of hardware just kinda turns us poor people off. Plus the shooting and plane parts didnt feel so revolutionary at all.

Liquids and particles on the other hand were utterly amasing.

Yes it's cool, but that's yet another card we have to upgrade regularly. And by looking at the price, I'm not too sure it'll be that wonderful for the average user.

CPU + GPU + PPU = lots of money, lots of energy, lots of heat.

The PPU "Completes the triangle" so I dont think we'll be seeing much more new gaming hardware in a while.

I think it's a fairly good idea, actually. It might cost more, but developing CPUs that would be able to handle as much physics calculation as another processor will probably be even more expensive.

The fluid dynamics right at the end looked nice, but yeah, the rest didn't see all that good.

I say just wait until we see more duel-core cpus. One core for the normal game stuff, the other core for physics.
  • Cereal_KillRCereal_KillR Join Date: 2002-10-31 Member: 1837Members
It's really nice if you know it's done with absolutely no strain on the CPU. It's just a tech demo, not a full-scale game with top-notch graphics. Does it show good physics? Yes. That's all it's supposed to do.
  • Status_QuoStatus_Quo Join Date: 2004-01-30 Member: 25749Members
Yeah. Most of the stuff in the video(s) were not that amazing. The liquid being poured over the car had some pretty nice effects, though. But I wouldn't expect amazing from an unreleased prototype hardware running demo software.

well... there's still one more card to come y'know. We've got our graphics and audio and soon we'll have the physics. What's left? AI card!!! :D

I seem to remember talk of a card to handle the crunching of running NPC AI being considered :o

Soon we won't even need the CPU.

There's a demand for PPUs. Right now, they're being sold as seperate hardware, but we may see them integrated into 3D cards, motherboards, or even CPUs. However, what is really needed is an official driver standard for all PPUs, including software emulation if a PPU is not present. A DirectPhysics or OpenPL standard would do nicely, though they don't currently exist yet.

    Edit:
I should add that, currently, sound is mainly produced from stock samples. A PPU would help produce sound "on-the-fly," especially taking advantage of an area's unique sound characteristics.

mmmh, fluid dynamics.... and i thought i was content with bump mapping.

    need... more.. realistic... game experiences....

I want a Not-even-near-any-sort-of-realism-at-all game. Nothing would make sense and mad fun.

There's pills for that, you know.

Edit: Is that correct grammar? I know it's "there are pills...", but can you use "there's" for that anyway? Is there another way to shorten "there are"?

    Grammar question, ftw.

That is not a grammatically correct sentence.

It should read "there are", for "there is" does not work with the plural form of "pills".

If you wish to use "there's" then you would need to change the sentence like so below.

"There's a pill for that, you know."

There is contraction for "there are."
