Actually Apple is eventually switching over to Intel chips around 2006-2007. And IBM doesn't make their own pc chips anymore since like 4 months ago.
I'd actually like to see the price to performace ratio for an Apple compared to a PC... Also, neither a mac or a pc is really better than the other since they both excel in different areas.

Actually, marketing is the reason why Microsoft dominates the OS market. Marketing, marketing, and marketing again. And that's where Apple really got owned, nobody can deny that. Technologically, they were ahead for a long time - now, I just don't know.
But hey, having something to hate brings people together. It worked in Germany in the thirties...
But macs look a lot more professional that a shiny green computer with a giant window on the side with blue and red lighting inside :/
Edit and anyways, the only reason that there are more PCs is because they're way easy to use and even easier to repair if they break because there are a gazillion different kinds of shoddy parts available.
Think about it this way - a PC is like frankenstein's monster and a mac is like the werewolf. MAKE YOUR CHOICE
And then there's also the reasoning that fifty percent of the world would say "Whoh. Apple makes computers, too?"
PCs have a large market for different types of cases, in which Apple doesn't so Apple can ONLY look professional, while PCs can look Professional, Ultimate Gaming Machines, etc. The reason why Apple didn't dominate the computer market is because they really never sucessfully licensed other companies to create clones, which boosted their price higher than PCs on a performance ratio. Apple is now kinda worse of for a year or 2 because no one really wants to buy an Apple because of the new intergration of Intel cpus makes people wonder if they purchase an Apple computer now, will it be obsolete in a year or 2.

From my experiences in Unis, you don't tend to see Apples past high school in American educational settings. Nearly all the computers I used at the U of Iowa were Dells running XP Pro or Redhat, and absolutely all of the computers here at WPI fall under that catagory. Every once in a while I saw some crappy lab filled with outdated Apples at U of I (old iMacs and stuff) that the writing students and some video editors were using. Poor folks.

i see what you did there,
you countered your own point before i could so i couldn't make it, by saying old people should use macs but then countering with "well, they dont need all that power"
i agree, elderly people do not need to spend 3 grand on that superfast easy-to-use macintosh when they could instead plop down 500 bucks for some quaint little PC that does exactly what they need.
i think the point here is that macs, in general, are very specific, very expensive workhorses with an easy to use (but dreadfully simple) interface, and they're used for what they're sold for. video editing, audio editing, whatever.
no one uses a mac to play games, no one uses a three thousand dollar mac to read email and surf the web, no one needs that kind of rigid inflexible hunk of plastic on their desk when they could be quite content with a thinned out little Pc.

No one uses a mac for gaming because almost no developers know how to write a game that is optimzed for their particular OS, and when they do, they run better.
Also, most mac "towers" are smaller then the PC ones...
(See Sim games for examples(of faster running games on a Mac then PC))

It's funny because the first thing I did on linux was deleting the display drivers while trying to install new ones. And I never managed to break any Windows-essential files even when trying (in such a way that it could be an accident, nothing like 'let's try to reboot and reformat')
Older people should be getting macs for their simplicity. I think I'll eventually get one for my grandparents because they're so scared of the computer world, and that one-piece iMac is just the thing they need. Erm... I have no idea when it comes to linux and even I managed to break something, never did that on windows.. unless you count the one time in 98SE where I deleted autoexe.bat. (Not my fault, I swear windows decided to highlight the next file down instead of the one above (the one above was listed as abs.exe(virus)).

mac's suck, i dont care if they are 'faster' (of which i still dont believe there are SO many unknown factors.)
i.e RAM
i mean, 3d modelling also depends on gfx, so that matters, "faster" is a bad term, "better" would sort it out.
pc's rape mac's thats why there are more of them then pc's in user's homes. thts why bill gates has lots of dosh.
