Looking good! Always thought the NS maps were a bit too static. Glad to see there's some interactivity being planned. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
I love the idea of railcars as well as the art you guys showed us! They'd open a wide new door to mappers, but yeah, like it's been said before, the big question is: Will players be able to build on it's surface? I don't this it'd create much imbalance if the mappers take it into consideration.
Oh.. and I think Cory got surpassed by the mighty monorail cat ^^
edit: maybe a mod should remove the "1 of 4" in the title's thread?
Fantastic work Cory ! Your concept arts are an incredible source of inspirations for mapping! Thanks for sharing us your vision of the game! It'll help for sure!

I vote we scrap the idea of real monorails and put the monorail cat it. It saves leather seats and give NS2 a nice warm, cuddly feel <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />.
Anyway, good work Cory! Me likes the monorail idea, especially the "arm" idea of #3.
<b>Edit:</b> If there would be a monorail that you can build on, it would have to be rather large to have any decent number of buildings. From the look of it, the monorails looks like it can fit about 6 - 8 people comfortably. As so, you can pretty much only really fit 2 or 3 structures on it, I really doubt any more than that.
That pretty much ruins the idea of bases on the monorail and any really large imbalance (its tough to siege a hive with 2 siege cannons without support), unless is pretty darn big. But don't get me wrong, I think that it would be a good idea to allow structures on the monorail, it would make for some interesting strategies. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":)" border="0" alt="smile-fix.gif" />
Try not to do a "Shutdown2" monorail that is NEVER used b/c it takes too long to get from one place tot eh other.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, SD2 is a map that's commonly played in TFC. It has a rail system below it, but it really only goes one way (then is stuck on the other side of the map), AND takes 2x as long as a medic -walking- from spawn to the enemy base. yaaaa for useless train rides ! lol.
You really have to make sure the client can somewhat predict the movement of the train or you're going to see the same horrible jerkiness that makes fast trains and elevators worthless in HL.

andos, you officially win the monorail concept art contest.
Ha! I'm loving MonoRail Kitty. Who knew, cats and NS, such a purrrfect fit. I'll have to figure out a way to get cats into all of my concept art from now on.
I'm a little apprehensive about this new "insect" feel to Marine technology. I can understand the "dirty-tech" feel ( i.e. Mad Maxx, Dune, etc), but I think this might be slipping too much into the "insect/arachnid" feel (i.e. The Matrix).
I think a truly interesting concept could possibly be a marine start that shifts around a circular map slowly over time, maybe one rotation ever five minutes? the aliens have a hive in the middle of the rotation, and two outside. The entire map is based on the concept of movement where the aliens don't know which side the marines are coming from first.
There could even be little welding points to increase or decrease the motion of the tram, forcing the aliens to pursue. The welding point could be stuck in a totally off section of the map called train control.

Man, what do you mean, "This is something he wanted to get into the original NS, though it never quite made it the way he wanted it?" The lava in Machinima or whatever worked great and looked almost exactly like that picture.
Excellent. This is some really great stuff, man. It'll be great seeing a group of marines go out into a tunnel, and when the rail car returns in their place is a giant onos with a squad of skulks jumping out from under him. I really hope the aliens in NS2 will have more of a horror feel to them. As in harder to see and make a sound that will always have you jumping out of your chair when they scream.

I believe he's talking about the monorail in that quote. Wasn't something called the BUS planned for NS1 a while ago? I remember something secretive. Was that going to be a monorail that just didn't work out? My memory is a little foggy on it.
