Looks like the new release is... extremely close.

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Status (10/27/2007): All right. I'm in the process of editing the various text files and the manual (such as it is) that goes with the release and doing other release oriented tasks. Right now, I'm thinking Monday. Of course, my Mondays look like Tuesday mornings sometimes. I've been getting up at 1PM and going to bed at 6AM lately, so setting a numeric day might be a little difficult. Anyway, should be the last stretch. I think the zlib stuff will be all right once it arrives. I'll have to change a few things, but I'm told it won't be that time-consuming.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Status (10/28/2007): I finished up the manual revisions, such as it is and such as they are. Mostly getting rid of obsolete data and adding a page here or there, that sort of thing, but not all that much. The game should be up tomorrow whenever vaguely. It generated 920 creatures in a cave I visited, so I fixed that. It was sorta slow.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    Tomorrow, then.

Mkay, so, I want to try out the fancy new fortressing. However, I yet remain overwhelmed by the options available to me at the start and I am unsure of how/where to begin. Is there like, a really good guide out there somewhere that lists a few <i>really</i> important things a person should do before starting a fortress? like, giving dorfs the miner skill (for example) I would guess that is something that would be in the guide.

so far I've spent all my time coming up with puerile names for my merry band of dwarves and their new home. Best I've come up with:

'Windbreaker the Fragrant Leaky Trumpet-Anus of Sputtering', founding a fortress called 'Tubgirl'

A new chapter of dwarven history begins here at this place, Burissaruth, "Tubgirl". Strike the earth!

I think I'm gonna say screw this sucker until people make some new guides and/or it's patched. I have no idea what's going on. There's shiny things all over the ground that, when I put my cursor over em with K, it scrolls uber fast and I have no idea what they are. Also my cursor keeps going haywire and scrolling in a direction I don't tell it to indefinitely...

guess I should do my part and start reporting bugs.

I am also hanging it up for now.

get back to it later. I might actually play the last version for a bit instead. I had the beginnings of a good fortress.

Sounds like farming is either easier or harder than it used to be, depending on your map. If you have a map with clay or silt or loam or peat or whatever, you can just farm on that - no need for irrigation. but what's a dwarf fortress without needlessly complicated floodgate farms? :o

yes, we should be forced to set up powered pump systems that will flood an area, drain it, and return the water to a reservoir

I suppose I'll chime in with some exciting information:

If you're having crashing problems, try extracting everything to a fresh folder, and not overwriting. Additionally, some people occasionally generate buggy realms, so you could also try regenerating the world. I haven't actually seen this free meat, but I have heard it causes people to crash.

At the moment underground is slow (as in, most people get 1/2 speed), so try to stay at ground level if you want to speed things up.

    Gameplay hints and information:
To easily get rid of specific stones blocking your way cordon off a refuse dump (it's under [i]), and then go to the stones you don't want with loo[k] and the select the ones you want to get rid of with D (...for dump).

Avoid starting in Saltwater marshes...and well, marshes and swamps of any kind...for your first go. Saltwater is not potable, and aquifers make buildinga fortress nigh impossible (although it is apparently possible to clear out some of the water with a screw pump, so you might eventually be able to build a castle or something if you've got the resources).

You can plant farms on 1/7 deep water (the water will dissipate as soon as the farm is completed).

In a similar vein: since rivers and brooks can be somewhat difficult to harness at first, the easiest means of farming (if you don't start on immediately workable soil) is to tap into one of the many ponds, similar to the old way.

The easiest way to think of each level is as a ceiling, middle and floor; when you dig you only take out the middle. The structure is like
    Main X
    Floor X
    <b>Ceiling Y
    Main Y
    Floor Y</b>
    Ceiling Z
    Main Z

Channels dig down to the level below you (they cut through the floor of your level and the ceiling and main section of the level below.

Stairways need to be connected to dig down a level. Start with a 'down stairs' on your base level, then go down one level and build an 'up stairs' on the same tile. Then your miners can hop down to the next level and start carving stuff out (...unless of course you've just dug into an aquifer, then they'll probably drown or something).

Ramps count as being on the lowest level, even when you build an up ramp, it doesn't necessarily mean you've opened up the floor of the level above (...and so, it's pretty hard to mine upwards into a lake).

Ramps are generally more beneficial than stairs, and dwarves tend to avoid carrying things up and down stairs if there's any other way. So, throw in a ramp if you've got the inclination (subject to bugginess, sometimes they still take the really long way around for no reason).

In case it's not readily apparent: dwarves can walk over brooks (note the light blue water), and so you don't need to hurry and build a bridge if you start near one and you're in fear of where your trade caravan will come from. [I've never actually seen one walk over a brook, but this is what I've heard]

You might want to set one of your dwarves up with the appraiser skill as you embark so you can get a better view of your wealth and trading options; you can set nobles' jobs with the [n]...Outpost Brokers don't actually require anything special to operate, and they don't get to trade that often to raise the skill at the start (I'm guessing once you get an economy he's replaced by something else).

Try to set some time aside for your expedition leader so he can speak with the Dwarf Liason (as in, disable his menial tasks if necessary)...apparently there have been cases of Dwarf Liasons going crazy and killing dwarves and animals.

<!--coloro:#FF0000--><span style="color:#FF0000"><!--/coloro-->Carp <!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->are dangerous and to be avoided at all costs.

Apparently there's a bug where melting down multiple objects (like bolts) will net you a lot of metal bars.

Careful if you decide to start by volcanoes...usually there are bad things in the caldera...also, you have a chance of 'embarking' into the caldera.

...There's plenty more, but that should make it more manageable for some people.

I can verify that dwarf liaisons will swim through brooks and carry their goods with them for trading.

Also, if you find "loam" anywhere, you can farm on it. Very handy!

I started a fortress with the ENTIRE top level of the mountain made of sandy loam! When the dwarf mines it out, you get no stones, it takes only a few seconds for a good miner to clear an entire room for you and above all you can farm on it!

So I set the top level of the fortress as my farming/storage area and build a central stairwell that leads down to my manufacturing level and then the sleeping level. The additions of levels in this game has really opened up the possibilities!

Also, how does one make a well? I have everything except the chain and I don't know where to build a chain from or what material to use.

In addition to this question, I ask the exact process of making "refined coal" because in a previous game I had found some bituminous coal but couldn't figure out how to refine it so that I could use my metalsmith shop <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />

    **edit

The reason I ask about the well, is because it's now winter and my dwarves have no source of water. I tried mining out the bottom section of an aboveground frozen lake but had... little success.

    For a well you need
    a bucket (carpenter's)
    block(s) (mason's)
    mechanism(s) (mechanic's/mechanism's, dont remember which)
    chain(s) (blacksmith/metalsmith)

For the chain you need some metal, so you need to find ore before you can make a well.

Yeah, but even if/when I do find some ore I'll still need some kind of "Refined Coal" it says in order to USE the metalsmith's furnace. That's all well and great, except how do I get coal and how do I refine it? etc etc. It's all very complicated as I'm sure you can see.

Well, in the other version you could get a coal-like material by burning wood. Im not sure if this still applies however.

Im definetly digging (hah...pun) the new z-axis. It's alot simpler and easy to use then I thought it would be. Now to try out the new pumps. Silty loam = Win. It's never been so easy to farm.
  • NeonSpyderNeonSpyder &quot;Das est NTLDR?&quot; Join Date: 2003-07-03 Member: 17913Members
I am extremely happy with the new loam business. It makes farming POSSIBLE for people such as myself who found the using-doors-as-pumps-or-something business of previous versions to be a weeee bit frustrating.

I will try making coal using a wood burning furnace. If that will work then good.

In addition: an update on my fortress currently. It's the middle of winter and my dwarves are contemplating murdering each other in a desperate attempt to acquire some kind of liquid to drink in my hell-hole of a mountain.

I caught one of my dwarves licking up remnants of water spilled from a frozen pond that I had dug into from below. He licked it up from the ground!

So yes, they all like homocidal and I am just waiting for them to go psychotic before i start a new fortress, this time with an emphasis on finding metal/building a well BEFORE winter arrives and they all die of thirst.

use your extensive farms to brew some delicious alcohols instead of looking for water. They likes the beers better than the waters anyhow!

re: wells. they're pretty useless now. You've already noted that they need a ton of materials. Even when you have everything needed to build one, they don't spontaneously generate water like they used to. they need to be placed over a shaft that has a pool of water or an aquifer at the bottom.

    Harsh.

And this alcohol you speak of, where to get it?

I'm not 100% sure on the process of producing alcohol as the drone I assigned to 'brew drink' at my still has decided instead to sit around moping the lack of nourishing water. So I don't know what he's going to tell me he doesn't have and needs in order to do his job. Just like every other dwarf, every other time I've told one of them to do something.

Me: "Turn that platinum into some shiny coins or something"
    Stupid Dwarf: "Need refined coal!"
Me: Okay, I'll just... uh, turn this bituminous coal into coke then, at the furnace thingy? Okay... that's the only option I see anywhere to do anything with coal...
Another Stupid Dwarf: Need refined coal in order to make coke!
    Me: I will DESTROY you.

**edit** I play so much EVE, that for some reason my brain automatically tries to type "Drone" as in the drones on my ship, instead of Dwarf! Everytime!

    <a href="http://archive.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Brewing" target="_blank">http://archive.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Brewing</a>

provided it works mostly the same way as the old version, you need empty barrels to put the booze in, and one of the plants listed to brew into said booze. designate the brew a drink option from the still and that's basically all there is to it. Press 'o' and then go to 'food' and make sure everything you want to brew has the word 'brew' in blue and not red. red means you're telling your dorfs not to brew that thing. on that note, I generally recommend turning off the cooking of plump helmets, since that destroys the seeds, and if you have your cooks working overtime, you may wind up with hardly any plump helmet seeds because they all get cooked...

this is all provided these things work the same way as they did last version =p

also, I just read that there's a bug with making coke (or bars of any metal, pretty much). sounds like you always wind up making 1 bar instead of the 2 or more it's supposed to make...

but about making coke... I think you have to build a wood furnace first, and then burn some wood into charcoal, and use the charcoal to make coke... though I have no clue if charcoal counts as 'refined coal'... I'm assuming it does or you'd probably have no way to make coke ever...

Has anybody else noticed you can now smooth mineral veins? You seem to be able atleast.

So, will sieges and such be able to break above ground walls? Right now I don't see a point in not building a single stairway downwards then re-walling all the way around it. Monsters wouldn't be able to touch you right?
