awesomest random place name ever. That location looks like it would be ideal except for the lack of water. It seems near impossible to find a fortress location that has water, lava, trees, and no aquifer <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" /> I found a spot that has everything but steady water. just a few murky pools. Are there variants between the aquifers, salt and freshwater?

I've never had this problem. My dwarves always seem to have a solid set of priorities (with a few exceptions here and there, but mostly okay).
I have run into a strange problem. My military, though set to Stand Down, all gather up in the bedroom of the sheriff/captain of the guard, even when said dwarf isn't in the squad. it seems like dwarves now 'latch on' to the location of their last job and will congregate there if they have nothing else to do... I've had dwarves hang out in the workshop where they do their work even when they're off duty, etc.

As I have noted in the topic of that DF channel that someone made, Markavian's Dwarf Fortress Map Archive now supports the silly Z-axis antics of the new DF.
Mysterylanced, Dwarven surface settlement (and shrine to the blood god, apparently) Paintbanners, a more typical dwarven outpost
I have a few questions, and I cant seem to find a decent answers anywhere.
1. If you lack a underground river for mushroom farming, is it possible to channel out from external river through a floodgate and into a cavern?
2. -exactly- how do stairs and ramps work, and do you need a certain skill enabled to make them? I've tried just about everything. From what I've heard you put a downward stair on the main level then a upward stair on the level below, but it doesnt really work.
1. yes, just fill it with a small amount of water and build a farm plot
2. mining is used to create stairs, make sure both the up and down stairs are on the same x,y coordinate while only different by one z unit. If you have a full section of rock or soil then you can make the whole thing a little easier by using up/down stairs. Ramps are always done from the lower level (up ramp)

QUOTE(DiscoZombie @ Nov 10 2007, 11:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

also, you can avoid irrigating at all if you have sand or any sort of soil underground...

Or above ground, but that's for a different set of plants.
So my alcohol stocks got a little low, not dry, but low.
I had ordered all my stills to full production and suddenly about a sixth (10 dwarves) of my population died of thirst and many others started throwing tantrums.
One killed a war dog and another threw her baby somewhere where it drowned.
This game sure can get a little intense when dwarves run out of alcohol.
update: another 10 have bit the dust so far, a tanner went berserk and killed everyone who was in the barracks ( a wounded guy and a couple of homeless) and then went on a rampage around the area until he was struck down.
update: more deaths, but I discovered the issue that's making this get worse, all the dwarves are miserable because they're losing friends. So they throw trantrums and hurt more dwarves which causes more deaths and more miserable dwarves... the walls of this fort shall drip blood by the end of it.
update: apparently the berserker tanner wasn't dead... I fast drafted a bunch of dwarves right in front of him, that ended that one, but people are still throwing tantrums
just thought you might want to see how my dwarves are feeling:
update: apparently tantrums cause freezes and almost my whole population is miserable or very unhappy, so with the facts that half my population died and with them some of my best workers (including my very talented expedition leader) I'm abandoning this fort.

Couple of patches have been released recently...latest one was released a couple or so days ago...
By the way, anyone managed to construct anything of interest? The DF forum is rather...creative these days apparently. People seem to be really into constructing major buildings and multi-storied towers out of green glass and crazy stuff like rooms with waterfalls falling through the middle of it all etc.

But some people like user friendliness and a better interface...
Hell, I'd be happy if DF just had sim-city style isometric graphics.
