Do it under ground at first, do the grate trick (you can trigger them open to allow dwarves to pass, btw) and a ways later you just dig the channel as usual which opens the already created flow to the surface.

I did manage to get a semi sucessful fort going, had a little smelting house going. But the just mass influx of migrants completely screws me over and then goblin bowmen ambushed my guys, arrows started flying and nearly *everything* died. It was hilarious <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> Ask Redford!
I've been training my military up by starting them out as wrestlers.
A dwarven caravan came and was immediately amubshed by some goblins, who died.
Soon after that, while the caravan was still travelling, a second ambush popped up right next to a couple of the caravan's guards and my two best wresters.
They're still working things out, but I saw my best wrestler toss a goblin about 20 tiles away, down one z level, and slam into a wall, popping off a couple of limbs.

A stray imp tried to kill a couple of my dwarfs in this fort, but it missed and they just battered it to death, later on a horse just like wandered up to the corpse and then got set on fire. It burnt <i>forever</i>
I was just ambushed by about 3 or 4 goblin raiding parties.
Again it was during the human caravan, they like to do it right when the humans arrive.
Anyway, no dwarven deaths, just 4 or 5 war dogs and a kitten. Most of them ran off this time, but a couple died to the humans, several died to traps and war dogs, and 4 of them were captured in cages.
I'm up to six goblin prisoners now... what to do. Perhaps I'll make a zoo.
update: a few of them are still limping out of the area. I doubt they'll survive the journey back to their town.
update2: I can't find the human caravan and I see some of my dwarves carrying bags of stuff from out in the field, they may have all been killed.
update3: I now suspect they mostly ran, but I found a deceased mangrove wagon in the unit list.
edit: one of my miners was destroying a floor and it caused a collapse (I had planned the colapse) but it took him with it, even though he was on the right side of it.
The really bad part? he was 20 levels up. he exploded into every possible body part.

A question: does the world spawn more magma creatures over time? So if I kill all the magma creatures, can I expect the area to be safe after that, or will there be more imps and stuff later? Though I've played DF a lot, I've never built a successful, big fort at a magma location.

My fort is on a magma vent. I had a couple fire imps, but I killed them six years ago and they haven't respawned. There's a magma man, too, but he's never bothered my industry.

personally I am waiting till religion comes into play. After all, what is the point of prisoners if you can't sacrifice them to angry gods (or to your self for that matter!)?

it is more fun when it has in game effects <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

Woo! solid gold road and electrum bridge! those statues are electrum encrusted with gems :3<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> How do you get it to zoom out like that? Do you just paste several images together?
[edit] Oh well. I had Temperature disabled. That's why the following happened: [/edit]
[edit2] Or was it!? I quit DF, enabled temperature in the init file, restarted and loaded the game. The game ran much slower (which would indicate that the temperature was enabled now). I threw the gobbo leader into magma, and... he drowned, too õ_õ [/edit2].
I'm so dissapointed. I captured a few invading goblins, including their civilization leader! I thought a delightfully cruel way to 'dispose' of the prisoners would be to throw them into lava. So I did, I shoved one spear goblin down a cliff, and he fell a few levels down into magma. But I'm not seeing any overwhelming pain, agonizing wounds and burns? Instead, the goblins "Wound"-status window said it was... drowning. He did die, but by drowning, and without a single wounded bodypart <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
Oh well, I guess I just need to make a pit, chain it full of angry wardogs and throw my prisoners there.

Hit esc then select export local map. It'll bring up a menu with all the z-levels and there will be some selected where you have stuff, just deselect all the ones except your main fort entrance (or whatever you want to show) and it'll export a .bmp of that entire z-level, then crop what you want in PS.

Might be time to give this guy a weapon.
He lacks The Vision, don't mind him.
I've got my fort on a memory stick so I can play it whereever I go. It's a good system.

like *sniff* sinff* BURN!!!
something like that?
edit: btw, we still have a channel on gamesurge (#ns-df) if you want to talk DF, we'll help people learn to play if they're interested.
edit2: woops, put the wrong channel in there, corrected it, #ns-df
