That said, a displacement entity could be used quite dramatically to put dynamic dents in things...

I feel the same way. However, the twitter has had some good posts this week. Like the one with the alien commander idea (with an image! Thank you very much).

Just for the record, I'd expect your time spent vertex editing to increase, not decrease.
