they've stated that the engine is mostly finished. i don't see why not let us make our own lua stuff, how could it hurt? i'm sure they aren't giving us anything like gameplay mechanics, or anything like that, but i'd imagine there's enough given out to let us see our stuff in engine, and from that we could throw in some random things to make a minigame.

Not really. The engine would need some way to start it, right? The editor has a way to link to the editors libraries and use them. Because its "what you see is what you get" we might not actually get an in-game test-mode right off the bat. External Lua would probably be disabled too.
All speculation of course. They may end up opening it up entirely.

you can start piecing together parts of a map without running through it, just don't be surprised if you have to redo stuff later on
Every time I've tried mapping before, I always bit off more than I could chew, and would end up with a big map layout with no polish, crap lighting etc...this time I'll try forcing myself to do one area at a time, and get it looking good before I add on to it. It will help that I can do lighting at virtually the same time as brushwork/texturing :P

Comprox is monitoring this thread, so no doubt there will be an "oh $%#@" moment, and a retweet :) That or he meant what he said, in which case :-O It still says on the preorder page, for SE, "first access to alpha", there is no mention of alpha on the standard edition.
I was just wondering the other day when this (the tools) would be released.. wow. Anyway, how about some Lerk or Fade updates? Alien Resource nodes or other chambers?
Oh, and I'd love a "how-to" or "wiki help/tutorial" to make textures for the game from Cory or another free "art" guy. I am very keen to make texture packages myself.

I'm sure that depends on stability and how many resources they are releasing with it.
Ive never really mapped before (except for some fun in doom2) but ill be doing a few hours on it later tonight *because i can* :). Finish work in half an hour, then to the gym etc.. So take your time guys lol

true, but it doesn't hurt to get some people together and start passing out ideas.

I base my ideas on what I am able to do with an editor. Like when you fire up Photoshop for the first time. You really don't know what to do with it, or how it works. So you only play around with the sun flares the first few times. Then you watch some tutorials and realize how much more you can do with it. And only then do you become inspired to do more and create cool sigs, wallpapers, art.. w/e. Only when we know with what we can do, can we be inspired to create.

Oh because people are asking - all pre-orderers will get the alpha, not just Special Edition folks.
Pretty sure that was a typo.
PS. Please someone fix the reply templater >_<

Are you really sure that it will work on my Pentium 4? xD
Not so sure...
