what's the difference between "internal testers" and "alpha testers"? being serious here. just seems they kinda are the same.. except alpha testers spent money... correct me if im wrong (not being a jackass this time, surprise lol).

    Most likely:

As the name implies, internal testers are trusted testers that get their mits on builds that will not see the light of day as of yet, due to features that are still *hush hush*. Alpha testers get a closed public build. Closed to people who don't have an alpha key to fool around in there, but still public to do things like NS2HD guy does for example...

but at what point does one start and one end? and then what about beta? and final release?

The game should reach Beta when the majority of the core mechanics are implemented, such as structures and playable Kharaa classes. The Power Grid's in, Dynamic Infestation probably won't make it until Beta.

i don't know the engine very well. lol so i dunno if this is going to be changed or not, but i always remember that, as a skulk, I'd run up a small vertical wall then be in the air, unable to move, thus becoming a static target.... as a skulk, i'd like to cling to the surface and not have that "floating effect"... is the new engine going to solve this?

What a christmas present that would be!

Does anyone know what 'separate collision detection from physics' actually means in practice? Implementing a collision system separate from the physics system to reduce engine load?

I would guess it's to integrate it into the netcode more efficiently. PhysX is pretty weighty.

"We're still fixing some showstopper bugs but we'll have the patch out as soon as those are fixed. We're building and testing a lot! #fb"

The devs need to stop saying "It's almost Done... [hours later]...o wait... no we were wrong... [next day]... IT's DONE... jk". I can't think that this hype+disappointment behavior is doing anything but damage.

The next announcement, regardless of how long it takes, should be "Uploading patch to steam".

It's not even that big of a patch when compared with this: <a href="http://forum.americasarmy.com/viewtopic.php?t=317367" target="_blank">http://forum.americasarmy.com/viewtopic.php?t=317367</a>

Right now their probably furiously marking small code patches at a time, building and tested after each bit, until it's ironed out.

Next twit will probably be "Alright, I think we got it this time...", followed by a little more back-and-forth, ending with us getting the patch on Friday.

Actually, if you count the lines of changes, AA had 203 fixes, while NS2 has 191. Pretty close.

It's big when you have two men coding their own engine. While America's army has a much larger team and isn't making their own game engine. I shouldn't have to explain that to you but I guess you're that clueless. That said they should at least just release the damn thing already. The build we have is already unplayable, they can't make it worse.

But imagine what would happen if they release another broken, unplayable build. People would say they're not fixing anything, that they don't know how to program a game, and that there's no point in releasing an alpha if it's so broken that nobody can test it.

There's no way for the devs to win! I agree that it's silly to say "here comes the patch!" and then go "whoops just kidding" all the time, but if they don't say anything then people will say "how come they aren't telling us anything" and "can't they just take 5 minutes out of their day to fill us in on what they're doing?"

Everyone seems to want UWE to be PERFECT. If they tell us everything that's going on, we complain that they're making us hopeful when it turns out they overestimated. If they decide to hold back and not get our hopes up, people whine that they won't just let us see what's going on. When they release a broken alpha (which, let's face it, every alpha is broken in all sorts of ways) people complain that it's broken, and then when they don't release a patch because it's broken, people complain that they won't release a patch.

There is NO WAY TO WIN. Then again, that's not really UWE's problem because they've already got our money and all they have to worry about is making an awesome game (not an awesome alpha). The only bad side to all this is if negative publicity gets out, but I think that if NS2 is awesome (and it's looking like it will be) then all this alpha crap won't matter at all, and the only thing that will happen is that people with no patience for patches or no tolerance for bugs will have left, and I say good riddance (especially because they've already paid).

Understand that no matter what you ask for from UWE, people will find a way to complain about it, and if you don't get what you asked for, then it will be you who is complaining. There's no one right way for UWE to do things except for the way that THEY choose, so maybe if we all just clam up and let them do whatever they feel is best, then things will go better, because it's not a case of us vs. UWE, it's a case of every move they make angering some different set of people. Why not just choose to be a person who doesn't get angry at UWE? They're making a game for you, and they already gave you NS for free!

They need to take their time and get this one right. If the game is still unplayable after the patch, things could go sour quickly.

I don't think the devs spend much time on the forums to notice people getting upset about the game not coming out quicker. Of course it's in their minds though, and people should have patience. But I don't think UWE feels anymore pressure than they already do because of people complaining.

Most people who purchased NS2, probably don't even have a clue as to how games are created, and how much effort really goes into them.

Hold on for a hot minute.

There is a really simple way to win; under-promise, over deliver.

However, UWE has consistently done the opposite; promised too much and under delivered. No one but UWE has done that to UWE.

Just before this patch mess UWE was starting to do the right thing; showing crap they are putting in with tiny, short, write ups. Hey look, the flamethrower. Hey look, the whip. They could do this with: heavy armor, new frontiersman buildings, new kharaa abilities etc. They have a virtually unlimited amount of front page updates that they could put up multiple times per week or month.

That's more than enough "Hey guys LOOK at what we're working on!" to build up hype without building up expectations.

I've seen a couple of people say things paraphrased as "I purchased the game based on what I thought was a relatively complete project with a relatively near release date. At the least, it was supposed to be a playable Alpha - with regular updates."

UWE has failed to deliver on all of those points. People aren't happy for good reason.

That doesn't mean you should get on the forum and start whining. But maybe, just maybe, this will let UWE know that they should not even mention the possibility of a patch/update/release without it already being finished/uploaded to steam/being played in real time.

Show us what's on the horizon, regularly, but don't promise something unless it's already delivered.

Edit: Already delivered - WITH HATS! Also where are the plush gorges?
