<div class="IPBDescription">A modding discussion</div> I've watched the big <a href='http://www.fileplanet.com/download.aspx?f=123983' target='_blank'>E3 HL2 movie</a> quite a few times now, and the Source engine that it's based on got me thinking quite a bit about what could be done with such a flexible game. I started by thinking of the multiplayer FPS possibilities, but ultimately started considering the other kinds of games you could come up with, as well as single player options. I assumed that HL2 would be (at the very least) using a similar or even rehashed version of the HL1 multiplayer code.
For example, the vehicle and outdoor engine seems pretty robust and allows for some neat possibilities. Did anyone ever play Steve Stackson's 'Car Wars'? It was a tabletop game where you built up vehicles with weapons, then fought with them in arenas, or by attacking and defending convoys on the open wasteland roads, and so forth. It kills me that no one has ever followed this all the way through - especially if you could get multiple people into vehicles as crews (which the game emphasized). With the big outdoor environments you could have long winding Mad-Max style combat, or last man standing missions in stadiums. Cool for multiplayer, and not too shabby for SP either.
Or what about making an adventure game in the 3rd person? Seems as though the engine is easily capable of supporting the next vision of Metal Gear, Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, or Splinter Cell. The possibilities are endless.
3D Puzzle Games and 'physical arcade' games- all those great physics shouldn't go to waste. You saw the 'Pachinko Simulator' - why not make a true version of that? Or wacky cool pinball? 'Tetris' in true 3D, with a 3rd dimension of 'depth' that forces you to play in all dimensions. And of course, 'Samurai', but with a cool 3D gameboard and tiles, and nifty battle sequences. Or 3D Jenga? <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Multiplayer Fighting Games - 'Half-Life Brawl'! Nevermind your nancy-boy Tekken with 2 players - I want a massive 3rd-person melee where everyone is a real player! With teams! No wait, solo! No wait, tag-team!
Then there's the five simple words: 'Co-op Resident Evil-Style Ripoff'. Brainless shooter fighting your way through endless waves of zombies, trying to protect your goofy sidekick. Written as a co-op game for 2 players, with one as the host; you'd always have a server, be it yourself or a friend. 2-player co-op really rocks in my book. You could replace 'zombie attack' with any other paradigm as long as it was 2-player co-op, in my book.
A true RTS? Not the genius that is NS with its hybrid gameplay. Since the Ai is supposed to be so much better and more flexible in HL2, why not make the ultimate 3D Real Time Strategy game? The subject matter is almost irrelevant (like most RTS's), but the possibilities are very cool. Your old limiters like level size are pretty much gone, and you can have vehicles now. rather than recycling some tired-arsed existing game, I'd love to see original design and story though. Meaning making something that is not 'Warcraft Half-Life'... something else.
What are your ideas? Keep in mind that OT or no OT, this is all opinions and no one needs to hear 'j00 idea sUx you dai n0w!!!' as a rebuttal, even if your idea was to make an HL version of NGC's 'Animal Crossing'...
PS: If this has already been a topic, well, neener. It bears chatting about more then!

Day of defeat would be really cool with all the explosions and pieces of wood flying in the air..
A mod like black hawk down, you could get the choppers, and apc's and such..
Fishing mod. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
I've had several mod ideas now for years that really are only just now possible (a few maybe not even yet heh), so I'm very excited about that aspect.

All that I'm going to say on that for now is: ;)

I actually have official permission from Capcom to make a Street Fighter mod. I was gonna do it for HL1, but bleh the code just isn't meant to do that sorta thing. HL2, maybe. It wouldn't just be a rehash of existing SF either, as I planned some original characters to add to the mix (though certainly it must have Ryu and Ken).

I'd rather have coop DOOM III, in any engine I don't care. :P

I dunno whether the netcode would be able to handle a true RTS, but I do think that the graphics engine would make it cake. If only somebody (and it won't be me, I suck at RTS's and should never ever make one. ever) could make a neato RTS that captured the "whoa cool" of C&C Generals and the "magic" of Warcraft...
-With 50,000 bugs running over flat open land screaming for your blood while you have to wait for a dropship.
Half Life
-Why the hell not? Remake Half-Life on the HL2 engine!
Matrix (Existance mod)
Dod
-With a real half mile run up Omaha beach with fragments, seawater, and limbs flinging into the air by morters and machineguns. With new map posibilities..you could make THE Battle of the Bulge!!
NS2
-A skulk hides on the cieling as he bites a tied down pipe, it swings down and belts you in the face. Bigger maps, more classes, more weapons, upgrades.
Indi-racing!
Stock car racing!
Virtual pancake simulator!
Gorge pet!
I've been plotting one of these for a while now - only not quite an adventure game as you put it... <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> I was a huge King's Quest and Space Quest fan and want to take a shot at re-creating that style of game in a fully 3D world. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Original idea was to put it on Unreal tech, but now... I don't know. <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
Don't forget the single player component. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Nothing saying you -have- to do multiplayer.
And to stop gamma cheaters, HL will calculate the ammound of light shining on the end of each of your bones, then make you transparent accordingly. For example, if your character is lit 100%, you will be 100% visable, 65% lit 65% visable, and so on. Thus. most people are shimmers, and the other team must look carefully instead of just cranking the gamma.
It's basically a complete ripoff of BlitzBall from yet another one of the Final Fantasy games I've never seen. Was great fun, whole lot of yelling and cheering.
Remaking it for HL2 may not give it much more than nice graphics (I don't see how the physics engine would make too much difference for such a mod) but it would bring it to a wider audience.
Me and some of my friends were thinking of doing a ns-style mod, except with no aliens and huge open maps. Huge maps. It would still have the rts-fps style in it though. It cannot be as good as NS though. We were going to do it for UT2K3 but HL2 sounds so much bettah.
New smilies, ownage. <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::fade::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/fade.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='fade.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::lerk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/lerk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='lerk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::lerk::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/lerk.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='lerk.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::fade::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/fade.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='fade.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif'><!--endemo-->
Super Mario Brothers in first person- basically make it so you cant strafe, the level just extends forward like the normal super mario brothers.
Wheel of Fortune!- haha, you could hold the mouse button longer to spin the wheel faster.
Carmageddon- hehe, gotta love pedestrians
Preform a multitude of moves including piledrivers, full nelsons, drop kicks, nipple twister, and girly slaps.
Well, obviously concept is easier than design... but I reckon that HL2 would be perfect for a (persistant?) territorial game.
Think NS command features combining with the realistic [high] damage factor of DoD with Desert Crisis/Existence-esque unreal abilities. Basically, an excuse to run around a (hyper)-futuristic environment blowing up/capturing vehicles and structures belonging to the enemy. With Havok physics, picture a car flipping over as a blackmarket-standard rocket launcher impacts nearby <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
Yes, thats the plan. I might mock it up in the current HL engine after my exams.
<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> I can't suggest any good new ones, but i have to say I love Monse's Road Warrior idea - reminds me of the old Games Workshop game Dark Future (which was admittedly very similar to Jackson's game). Also, though my modelling experience is a little limited at the moment I'd love to work on something for a nice sparkly engine like that - making post-apocalyptic vehicles sounds fun. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Its certainly something I would love to do (and have wanted for the last 2 years or so), and with HL 2 it may be a possibility. One thing I want to stress more than most current modifications do is the ability to totally customise your player to your playing style. If anyone could suggest a name for it, it would certainly help. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
Multiplayer then.. I could sure go for a nice sci-fi deal. Like the bit from the begining of starwars. One fat ship chasing a smaller one. The escaping team use laserturrets inside the ship to fight off incoming fighters. When their sheilds drop they must prepare for the assaultteam that will come with a boardingshuttle. Anyways, a sci-fi thing set in space with real working big and small spaceships would be really nice.
I remember a game like this was in the making but it must have been canned long time ago.. but that was singleplayer, but im sure it could work in multi too..
Well, I haven't played Deus Ex (I'm trying to look for the free copy I got... stupid me). I was thinking something like that, but with some elements from Blade Runner and other Sci Fi movies.
And that create your own movie idea sounds sweet.
Very.

I guess this is slightly off-topic, but in concerns with stealth mods...
Me and my friend recently went into a discussion about games and how it seems how so many games <b>really</b> involve the player. More than simply playing it, but experiencing it. It would seem that fresh concepts that are well executed are hard to come by these days, but one concept that no gaming company has touched, (and for good reason), is cooperative stealth gaming.
Vision:
<i>You and a few friends agree to play a game of the newly released title "Cooperative Stealth Shooter"; you all join in for one game, but you lag logging in. Finally you get into the game, where the models of your friends are standing impatiently while a holographic NPC towers in front of all of them.
"Agent X, please correct your habit of tardiness. Time is crucial for this upcoming mission. Now then, gentlemen"
"Ahem!"
"And gentlewoman..."
The 3D globe in the center of the room then beams up, as the NPC briefs you all about the upcoming mission assigned. The briefing is kept short, and afterwards, the player HUBs are given the choice of whether to ask for further information in regards to the mission, (perhaps, even forcing them to buy information in concerns with the mission). After the briefing, you and your friends buy/pick your weapons/equipment, and the globe + NPC fades. A map is then brought up, and from there, you and your friends pick which area of the map you will infiltrate from. Obviously, you guys want to spread yourselves out to really stretch out the enemy. Stay too close together, and enemy soldiers can easily contain all of you. Spread yourselves out, and a few members can create tactical diversions, while the rest of the team can take on the primary objective. Make it quick, there's a time limit, but stealth is the key here. Even with your voice com! Start talking behind a wall, but too close to a guard, and the guard will investigate! Cameras spread everywhere? Well obviously you won't be able to do anything, until you're cued from your partner that he successfully took down the power generator. The possibilities... and the experience of it all"</i>
Why it won't work: It won't be profitable.
- It's definetely a game designed for people you know. Try playing this on the general Internet, and people will ruin it in a matter of seconds.
<i>Confuzor: Alright guys, [3LI3T3]ReZaL, I need you to...
[3LI3T3]ReZaL: LOL! I R TEH H3R0!!!
/[3LI3T3]ReZaL rushes out attempting to be the hero and fails
Confuzor: ..... "Player", can you do this on your own?
Player: ummm... how do I fire?
Confuzor: ...... NEW GAME.
</i>
It's sad, but I'd really like to see a game like that, even though it'd be extremely hard to execute...
Emulators. And there's a Zelda MOD being worked on for HL1, I don't know if the're going to switch or not.
