i have to dissagree with ya there DOOManiac, it is likely to support 64 players. I believe this simply becuase games like battlefield 1942 and others can so i cant see why valve wouldent. I didn't even say I wanted it to be a MMO DOOM, if your going to make an argument, pick something that I said to ridicule instead of something you imagined, not only that, but you have no idea how many players HL2 will support, if they want to keep up with the latest games they are going to have 64, and if that is so, then all the better! And you say the people who made Fallout are making the next vampire game on the source engine? Well good for them, fallout is a turn based tactical rpg, theres no need to turn it into the next FPS, if you can make it turned based, well, why bother? You might as well do it on an engine that is designed for it. theres a 3rd person shooter Fallout game coming out for consoles, but we all know how thats going to turn out. You act like I told you you can't make these games on HL2, I didn't, I said you shouldnt, why bother going to all the work of programming in camera angles and gui, while worrying about how your computer is going to explode when you put too many units on the screen when there are 8970986709609847309373093487340987 3d rts's that can do the same thing in a quarter of the time? I'm sure at least <i>one</i> of them is fully moddable.
Well I plan to use Sid's idea (wai I think it may be spelled Cid...aw crap) for a mod I am going to make. His idea was that you start out with a pistol and get parts and attach them to your gun. You can add different parts to get different guns. Add this to a little Sci Fi storyline and you've got yourself a great mod.
Anyone every played the game Infantry Online? I've allways wanted to see a mod based of that. The problem with IO was that the veiw point was top down, so it couldn't truely support multiple levels (it woudl teleport you to a different part of a map to simulate going up or down a lift). With a FPS engine it would be perfect (appart from the buttlets traveling at 30km/h, but that can be fixed). IO was mostly based around CTF (capture the flag), sort of like TFC but not quite. You would run up to a flag and walk on it to grab it (like tfc), but instead of returning it to your dedicated base (in which ther were none), you would run so some nice snug spot on the map then sit there for a period of time before the flags dropped. The flags woudl then sit in that spot untill an enemy came and tryed to steal them, in which case you would promply try to stop them. Now there was allways more than 2 flags (usally around 4 or 5, 2 in static locations (which were hard to get to), the other 2 randomly located (to stop large flag rushes)), and to win the round your team would have to grab all the flags (didn't matter if they were dropped or not, or in they were all in the same place) and hold them for 90 seconds, if someone stole he flasg but was shot and so dropped it, the time would be reset. What i liked most about IO was that while there were classes (infantry, hvy weapons, squad leader, medic, jet packer, infiltrator) they were customisable. But certain weapons were only allowed to certain classes (the plasma cannon was only for hvy weapons, whereas infiltrator were only allowed to use energy weapons), and if you tryed to carry over your weight limit, you would slow down depending how much overweight u were. There was also a large amount of interesting equipment, for example a cloaking device that you could move with on, or a teleport summoner (that the squad leader would use to summon troops to his location). Like NS where was health as well as energy, and some weapons would use ammo, other energy, even some weapons would use both. Also depend on the class you would get bonuses (bigger payload you can carry, faster walk speed, larger energy storage, more health). Vehicles were also avilable in the form of jetpacks, you could get on the jet pack and shoot any weapon but move much faster than any other class. The only place a team could call their own was the dropship, each team had a dropship that they would spawn in (in the flag was dropped in there it would be randomly placed on the map as unowned), ammo and equipment could be bough in here and the other team was not allowed in (although bugs occured somtimes and the enemy could rampage your dropship killing everyone inside). team members would teleport into a random location on your respective side of the map. There was also another type of play like CTF called Skirmish. If woudl be like the TFC terriorial control maps, ther would be flags to control, but evenly spaced apart. To win the round your team would have to hold all flags for 90 seconds following to same rules at CTF. people woudl spawn in safe points on the map itself, wher no rapage was allowed. Whiel there were classes it was liek TFC and no customisation was allowed. Also the best thing about Skirmish was the vehicles, huge mammoth tanks which could crew 6 people to single crewed mechs. There was everything from scout class tanks to artillery peices. To use a tank it would require you to have a driver, thena gunner for the main turret and on most tanks a forward machine gunner. although on one paticular tank i can remeber (in which the driver had to aim and the gunner fire (as it was a fixed gun)) there were 3 machine guns. The crew mebers would allways share points for kills.
While this coun't be replicated (as it still exists as p2p, owned to sony online), i think it would make a fun tfc style mod if it were losly based off IO with the addition of a commander. Some things woudl have to change though; no points/scores (except for team, this was a real problem in io, with ppl goign around just concentring on their ratio). No buyable weapons (just selectable, as buying requires cash that ould have to be stored on a server somwhere, and it wouldn't be fair for it to be like CS). Commander, but in a movable view point position (like spectating freely, or DR2) that way multiple levels are feasable, yet you still can only see what your troops / turrets see, with fog of war type effect.
I really think that this style of mod would be fun, as HL2 could support huge maps just like IO, the base location possiblitites would be endless...

As to the server capacity question - I do find it extremely interesting that they went to the trouble of making the FPS world's first ever 64-bit dedicated server, to be run on the IA-64 and AMD Opteron chips. That speaks towards a future need for high player and processing capacity...

The AI sounds so good within HL2 that maybe you could write some sort of proprietary scripting system that works in game - think NS-overhead commander views, but that allow you to set paths and triggers and actions - advanced waypointing, basically. All sounds feasible from looking at HL2 demo and from what I know of HL1...

Well as for the CTF mod, it has been done to death. So many TF type mods where you have different classes and weapons. It is a little tiring in fact. I lose respect for the mods who don't see the "harm" in having weapons which kill everybody on the map etc. It is really stupid. If we made the fade acid rocket kill guys in one shot, what would be the point in going marine? The point is the challenge of it all. Ever play War 2003 for tribes2? Some of the weapons they have are mind-numbingly powerful. Mind-numbing, because that's what it does to your head when you try to fathom why there's a weapon you can fire that will capture the flag for you.
Anyway, if there were a matrix mod, I think it'd be a cool idea to perhaps have a "the One" and everybody else tries to kill him. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> It'd be near impossible, because he'd have all these abilities the others wouldn't. I hear they are coming out with a "Enter the Matrix" type game very similar in nature, only it is centered around multiplayer. I think this will be one of the many type of games possible.

Any matrix mod could have charaters and objects made of the matrix code running down them like in the end of the matrix one. <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo--> <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

When I saw the water model, I thought more along the lines of a character like T-1000. I'm somehow doubtful, but it would be amazing if the engine allowed skin changing, (i.e., water G-man --> normal G-man).
I hope someone DOES copy the idea. otherwise it will never get done <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->
Woo, and you could have stunt driving scenes! Action movies! Sci-fi thrillers! Soft-core pr0n! Erkk, I mean... ehhh... <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Get a copyright and start the progress =)
Anyway, if there were a matrix mod, I think it'd be a cool idea to perhaps have a "the One" and everybody else tries to kill him. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
It'd be near impossible, because he'd have all these abilities the others wouldn't. I hear they are coming out with a "Enter the Matrix" type game very similar in nature, only it is centered around multiplayer. I think this will be one of the many type of games possible.
HL:Existince, uses other names, cuz they had probs with warner bros.
I can't wait til that one's released... ^_^ <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Fiftheded, because the "Poke Greedo" and "Poke Greedo 2" games are too easy once you learn the controls.

Sixthed
u can go: marine, base marine [well, not sure about this one], alien, and alien commander
marine: just your basic marine, u go running around on missions and try to survive <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
basemarine: possibly you build up a base... and then send out missions from it, etc... i dunno <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
alien: you are a big fat alien, not a queen, not a normal drone alien. hehe... its either 'choose which alien u want to spawn as', or you evolve into it
alien commander: you 'control' a squad of AI drone aliens. you tell them where to go, what people to target, what mode theyre on [offensive, defensive, secure, blah blah]. its a commander view
over a HUGE area, im talking way bigger than some bf1942 maps <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->
