hmg kill WoL and hives beter than shoties, shoties kill aliens, all aliens, and for whoever said they wont kill a cara skulk in one hit, yes they will, but your at the dangerous place in timing it for a one hit, i perfer 2 hit kills (you need to find your sweetspot so that your second shot is just before they reach you, it will handle any skulk)

a level 3 shotgun takes down fades in two shots (just hide round a corner and nail them in the back twice before they know your there) but taking down skulks is pretty hard with a shotgun, cos you have to hit them dead-on (and point blank if they're cara'd) and if you miss the first shot... well
They give insane dmg, and if youre accurate youre able to take dwon anything melee or stationary...longer range..well you dont carry that sidearm for nothing...
HMGs are:
-Expensive -Slow reloading -Innacurate at long range as well -Expensive?
In a group of 5, Id give: SG,SG, GL, HMG,HMG With less res id give: Sg,Sg,Sg, lmg,lmg

Personally i have taken down a large number of fade with a shotty, but no one ( YES NOT ONE) with a hmg. I have taken down an onos with a hmg but it was sorta killing one of our res nodes so it was a fluke.
My view on these two:

So i prefer shotties, they have style like the matrix and are as damaging as an ICBM if used properly.
I like the shottie. I have killed several fades with shottie and it's really useful. But the shottie is bad when you have high ping or lagg problems , then it can become useless ( usually with the shottie you are sure that at least you hit something , but if you lagg you can't get kills very well ).
I was on CoFR last night and ripping it up with shotgun/jp combo. At one point I was flying up the vent to redroom, 2 skulks attacked me in there- dropped 7 health. Scooted my shotty butt out ouf the vent up to gen, flew up to the catwalk and took out another skulk. Shotguns and grenade launchers are a great combo for hive seige. GL sets up back and fires in, shotgunner crouches at glers feet. That hive never had a chance :-)
I had an amazing game a couple of days ago. And at one point - in NS_Tanith - a shotgunner died. I picked up his gun only to find ONE round in it. As I rounded a corner I came face to face with a lerk, and booned him down perfectly. It made me laugh so hard because if I'd messed up that shot I would have gotten my bottom chewed.

I've taken down fades with a shotgun more easily than with a HMG. Plus you can do it more sneakily with a shotty. And you can get one as soon as you build an armoury (presupposing you have enough res to do so) whereas HMGs require an upgrade to allow their mass production.

The only two things the HMG has over the shottie are ability to kill numerous charging skulks and buildings. I'd take a shotty over the HMG anyday, and lucky most of the servers I play on have comms with enough common sense to give them out. A jp + fully loaded shotty can last you the entire game if you are skilled enough. I get mad kill streaks whenever I have a jetpack and shotty because I can just rambo around killing gorgs and skulks that try to get out of their hive to other areas of the map and unlike an HMG I won't have to spam the comm for ammo every two seconds =/ And if you run into a hoard of skulks, just jetpack away backwards and fire as you retreat, get to an open area, and pick em off one by one. And the shottie is by far the best fade killer. When you manage to sneak out the other entrance to your base and come up behind an attacking fade, would you rather start pumping them full of HMG bullets which would instantly make them turn start doging your fire and attack you or just finish them off with one or two shots before they even know what hit em. Stealth advantages are lost to hmgs...
