If your wasting your time typing 111oneoneone instead of just !, then its not a shortcut, its just ig'nant for the sake of ig'nant.

Jeez people, get over |337 Speak, it got old 4 years ago. I dont care if you have proper grammar and spelling, but come on, is it that hard to say OWN instead of PWN? The letters are right next to each other. And if you are spending enough time to write []@ [] /V\ []@3|2 instead of Pimper, then you can learn the English language, go for it.

Most of the leet speakers cant even claim that English is a 2nd language for them, thats the most sad part.

Sorry for the undertone of frustration, but I have actually taught English and while leetspeak was cute, its gotten out of hand. I'm waiting for Hyundai to change their slogan from Hyundai - win to Hyundai- teh win!!!oneoneone111

Actually it is that hard to type own instead of pwn, for exactly the reason you say it shouldn't be. In fact, I spelled the word "own" wrong in that last sentence before I double checked to make sure. And besides, for a a great many of the people who use the word "pwned" it holds a distinctly different meaning from the word "owned". The two are not interchangeable in all situations.

And it has just struck me, everyone who has a problem with leet talks like they are tired of people who use leet in everyday life. Myself, in all my years I have only seen leet used in 3 ways: for a joke, oftentimes the leet itself being the joke, or perhaps the leet being used to inhance the absurtidy of a sarcastic remark; to make a screen name look unique, which is merely a style issue; and to provide a certain level of un-readability to their text (for example, someone cheating on their boyfriend typeing about it in a particularly hard to decifer version of leet on their blog), whcih is the reason leet was invented in the first place.

There isn't anyone who goes around typeing "1][|<3 7#][5" just for the heck of it.

Well, most of <insert elite talk> you refer to aren't really <insert elite talk>, they're just plain old <insert elite talk>.

Oh, and <insert elite talk> is lame. Electrocute all that fail using proper grammar.

Find all the spelling errors/grammatical mishaps and win a cookie. YAY I WIN

Dragging this back on topic... I type very, very... carefully. Usually the only time I make a spelling error is when it's a typo, and I'm working on grammar a little harder. To me, I don't notice the damned difference of typing 'you' instead of 'u'. Everyone says, "it's a shortcut", WELL WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU SO LAZY YOU CAN'T TYPE 2 STUPID LETTERS? Others, I can understand, like thru, and... you know, all the stuff that isn't really necessary. Yes, I can sort of read the 'shortcut'ed talk, but I'd rather make it really clear so people can read easier.
Capitalizing isn't necessary, but damn, that 'u' always ticks me off.

It was invented by warez kiddies, as far as I know, as a means of dodging software in place to pick up people discussing illegal stuff. I've never heard of real crackers using it, and hackers most definately don't use it. By the way, "crackers" are people who evade a computer's security systems to break into it (what the mainstream definition of "hacker" is; this definition is innacurate).

Ok, this one got me confused; fading vs. fad<b>e</b>ing. Now, why would anyone want to put an E in the middle of fading? Is this another US vs. UK english issue, or is it bad grammar?

I've never seen that before... and that's not proper English grammar. It's not just a US\UK thing.

What I can't understand is how an 'n' keeps creeping into the word "turrets" :/.

No clue why the N gets in turrets. Annoys me a lot.

I've seen it written in a humoristic context many times, but it seems like it only serves to strengthen the misconception that there should be an N in turret.

The reason a N gets into turrets is because of ignorant pea-brained idiots who can't properly prounounce it without something to soften the end of the word put it there, because they think the world should accomidate to their way of thinking, and in the process, spell it turrents.

I say we ban them from all forum activity.

Ok my spelling and grammer are ok I guess, well I'm dyslexic so things could be a lot worse, fortunately I learnt to type words rather than letters so the spellings just get kinda learnt parrot fashion, although I try to understand others with bad spelling and grammer and dont get anoyed with it unless they expect me to understand something which obviously is unreadable.
