you could add a threshold to that hole and use different texture on its walls than the floor texture. This isn't Star Wars <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->
It's coming along nicely. Don't forget to 'weld' the pipes with the floor, using a func_wall. That way the compiler won't slice up the floor and make a mess.
Kepp the lighting, that's good so far. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

Take a look at the resource tower in there. I don't really think the ceiling is all that low. I'm guessing resource towers are about 40-50 units high.... and there's quite a bit of clearance on them. It may seem a little cramped but shouldn't be all that bad.
Maybe it's just me though.... either way things are really coming along. The second pic of that pipe with the steam looks a lot better than the first did. It was a good change.
No, the ceiling isn't too low. It's the pipes that make the optical illusion (and the position of the camera, of course). Take a look at the pillar and where the pipes meet with it, then look at the ceiling by the pillar. It's ok. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo-->

I'll be perfectly honest with you, for the first couple of pages this thread seemed very much like a joke. A real joke, a funny ha-ha joke, a joke whereby some community veteran had donned a <i>newbie suit</i> and gone at it with all the pre-teen razzmatazz he could muster.
The sad reality is whilst being a joke, it certainly isn't funny. The first few map shots are reminiscent of something found scattered around <a href='http://www.somethingawful.com/cranky/' target='_blank'>Cranky Steve's Haunted Whorehouse</a>. The shots have everything from misaligned textures to serious overuse of YMCA disco lighting, it's cringeworthy stuff at best.
What followed was magic - we've had the best newbie-kiddie-isms in the book, and by heck it's a damn good book.

Slow down junior, unless you're hammering out 400 words per minute on a broken keyboard there's absolutely no excuse for what I'm seeing. A good exersise for the future might be to click the preview post button and read back what you've just written, stopping to correct the mistakes. I'm serious, the speed you type at you'll have them corrected in seconds.
<i>at the sign of any criticism:</i> <insert expletive> hole <insert expletive> u u <insert expletive> why du u haev to be a <insert expletive> <insert expletive> <insert expletive> u <insert expletive> just cuz im 12?
Slow down junior, take a deep breath and relax before responding to any flames you invariably will get when posting your first attempt at ANYTHING. Whatever you first thought of saying is music to their ears, regardless of how hard hitting it sounds in the old cranium. Chances are your second and third rethinks were just as bad - try thinking outside the box and NOT flaming back, god forbid.
iv bin doin this 4 4 years now so fu
Considering you've just been flamed to high hell, making the mistake of letting the one brandishing the flamethrower know what he's just insulted is the result of a GREAT deal of practice isn't the best strategy. It doesn't exactly help the people rushing to your side either, the most common come-come back to that being you've only just started, so give you a break.
im 12 so SUYF
I know some incredibly talented and intelligent 12 year olds. I also know some people who're exactly the opposite and coming on 30. Age isn't a measure of anything, there are kids out there with physics degrees at your age. It's not an excuse - don't use it.
i onli posted this so u cud gimie ideas
You may well have said "Ok guys, I have a box. Shoot!". Try surfing around, playing through some finished, quality NS maps and looking at some screenshots in this very forum. Get some inspiration, play around with some geometry and practice practice practice. Every game programming forum on the net has at one point had someone saying:
"ok i have an idea for a game i just need a coder an artist a music guy a sound guy some people to write the story and err some more coders and a mapper and a pr guy and prolli some guy to do the website thx. o the game is like doom."
This thread is just a different take on the same concept, it's not tolerated there, it shouldn't really be here.
fs guys comment fs my post is like 2nd on the page fs
People have lives, they can't attend to you 24/7 believe it or not. Spam like this won't win you any friends, it's VERY annoying.
I'm gonna have to cut this short, there's a lot more I can say but chances are it's going to fall on deaf ears, I guess it was but a vent. It worked. I'll close saying the map's come on leaps and bounds since the first page, but it's still just scratching the quality required to get real positive attention.
...woh thats alot of typing..but where is the point in it lol..i want info on map not my mom lol..and yeh the cieling that will allow atleast 4 onos on top eachother to reach..
The room still looks pretty blocky and simple, but it's a fantastic effort for a twelve-year old first time mapper. The last shots, in paticular, look like the room is starting to gain some real atmosphere. In paticular, the pipe. I can't remeber any official NS map yet with large amounts of internal damage or derbis and this is a welcome change from the norm.
EDIT: as an added off-topic comment - do NOT start flaming him or the quality of his map for any reason. He is twelve. this is his first map. I'd like to see your first mapping attempt. Wait, you've never tried it? I rest my case. Give him some credit.
Well I think it's looking good, I agree with Cragz though, search around for ideas if you're stuck. Well, actually, most "gifted" mappers (Not M33z for sure. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> ) can just see things in their head and go with it. Whenever I'm stuck I listen to some music or play a game of whatever I'm mapping for. (This helped me alot when I was mapping a TFC map.) Or play around with the different VHE tools, drop some prefab spikes or cylinders and just let your imagination run wild. Many times I plan on creating a certain one thing but in making that thing my mind takes off and I add all kinds of new things, which then spawn even newer ideas. Basically have fun and you should create something O.K.
However, to answer your question, I'd say MS needs more work and don't move on until you're happy with it completely for the time being. (A major pitfall of my own.) I tend to like to skip around and it shows in a bad way, so stick with MS for awhile longer and see what turns up!
Ideas from me include: Adding a few smaller pipes. (I shall call them "mini-pipes".) << Pinky over mouth << Ambient Generics - while they don't show on screenies <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo--> they are nifty! Add just a few env_sprites, specifically try some "haze" around the room. (Not too many though as you look through them their collective alphas add up and can make it hard on the eyes.
