How Common Are Hacks?

I came out of a game earlier tonight. A couple guys from some clan 'eXa' (Not naming names) were in there.

Towards the end of the game, one of the guy had over 100 kills. I think the next highest was 60.

Every life, he killed at least 2 skulks with an LMG, sometimes 3, in one clip. Whips out a pistol, and shoots a leaping skulk in midair down.

I wanted to ban for aimbotting. This was unnaturally good. And it was **** me off. But I always pause and think: Is he just really good? Or a real hack?

As a server admin, I'd really like to know what people's impressions of how common hacks are. I have caught people aimbotting (Didn't have a chance to ban them, as they made like a tree before I nabbed their IDs). But I'm always reluctant. How common are aimbots? Am I banning a guy whose just really good?

Yet another off-topic reply. And we're not putting CD on Lunixmonster. (BTW: CD kicking them out of the game is no where near as satisfying as going 'U RT BANT NUBLORD!'

Irunno. I've only come across 2 hackers, throughout my whole NS playing. But then again, I play in asia and there don't seem to be much occurences of cheating here. Those two hackers were in an american server <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

Yeah, not really constructive, but it does tell you how many hackers i've seen in NS so far.

Well, I think I'll be the first person to reply some-what on topic.

Personally, I don't run into that many cheaters on NS. When I do run into one, it's almost blatantly obvious. You can most of the time tell the difference between somebody with fast reflexes, and somebody who does an instant 180 to snipe a flying lerk. Maybe I'm just optimistic, but for the most part it seems that a lot of people are legitimate, although there is the occassional cheater.

<b>Edit:</b> Bah, zerobyte beat me to be the first on-topic poster.

Such a bunch of helpful people. Such a great, supportive community we have here, glad to know theres people I can depend on.

    /sarcasm

([mahn]sawce and ZeroByte are safe from the above comment, as they are constructive in their posts. But shame on the res of you.)

Anyway, I'd say that there are people that are good, but everyone has their limits. Shooting down a skulk in mid-leap is fairly easy, but taking out several ground-born skulks in one lmg clip is quite a rarity. I'd say just go with your gut on if you think someone is hacking or not. If someone is godly in game, there is a chance that they are cheating, and just because they're wearing a clan tag doesn't mean they're not cheaters.

when someone is unaturally good, it arouses suspicion, and then you have to go with your gut

I would say that less that 1% of people play HL with hacks

    Here's a sample video of a sloppy aimbotter: <a href='http://sit.wisc.edu/~cdbeman/vivid1.wmv' target='_blank'>link</a>

Taken earlier tonight/late yesterday on the ArsClan server. Still, he's the second or maybe third we've seen since 2.0 was released, so to answer your question: they're not very common at all.

Why don't you want to put CD on it though?

There are at least 2 hacks for no-cd ns servers. Both include the "normal" stuff like aimbot, wallhack, radar ...

And you can find them in less than 5 minutes with google, but i don't know about cd-proof hacks so far. But i am not an expert so i think there are cd proof hacks.

So i think cd is a very good solution at the moment.
btw: I've not seen a cheater on a cd server so far

Cheating is not common in NS, i run 2 servers and met no real cheater there during year of operation (I met 1 aimboter on some other server loong time ago)..
Ofcourse there were people with annoying skin changing script in the beginning but nothing like real cheat (aimbot).
To tell if someone is using aimbot simply spectate him from his eyes, it's fairly easy to tell then....

I also don't think there is any 100% anticheat, CD might help, but as usually there are cheats that overcome it, i believe spectating players is more reliable than relying on some program..

I've seen quite a few cheats in my time in jolly old euro land - all on servers with no C-D

The difference between us and you though seems to be the use of C-D. Seriously I have no idea why you don't use it more. We have it on so many servers in Europe.

Btw it wouldn't kick someone out - it's a prevention method so they'd never get to load up hl in the first place. C-D also locks a few dodgy cvars so thats a benefit..

It's not perfect, it can't stop new versions of cheats on their day of release but it's always updated so that it can as soon as poss.

By far the best anti cheat we have available atm.

Hah, so he *did* aimbot. Anyways, there hasn't been as much hacking in 2.0 because the vast majority of old easy to use hacks now just don't work anymore. There are some that you can fiddle with and eventually get working, but fiddling is the key part, and hackers by nature are lazy (if they weren't they probably go get talent the old fashioned way instead of using a bot). Aimbotting hasn't been so common lately as potential wall/sound hacking. If a hacker covers their tracks well it'll be almost impossible to ever upgrade your opinion from "doubtful" to "definite," you'll just have to go with gut feelings. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif'><!--endemo-->

As to eXa, I doubt they seriously hack... if they did they'd be a lot further up in the CAL standings.

I have never honestly seen or even suspected a cheater during all the time I have played.

I did play on CD servers though, and now with first person spectating it would be harder to get away with cheats.

imho aimbots are no real problem. nearly everyone that plays hl for years now is able to spot aimboters on the fly. thus aimbots are very very rare and only people who know that they will be spotted use it for testing purposes. the real problem are wallhacks. people tend to play good and have a very good aiming, use bugs like jumping ramps up and down to gain speed. a few days ago i just thought: that guy knows hl as if he has coded it. he was probably playing cs or hl dm coz his aim was godlike, but its was surely no aimbot. i went spectator and watched him for about 5 minutes. its the decent views through the walls that were present all the time. i just don't swivel my view over the walls all the time, every 10 seconds. wallhack doesn't make you lose the fun i guess. your kill rate increases and u still have to aim. this guy would surely rock the server anyway, but this way gets a few extra kills and this makes him feel even more superior over all the stupid noobs.

erm well if you dont put anti-cheat tools on your server then expect to get a few more cheaters than the average protected server.

we're on the half life engine.

we have no cheat detection to speak of

and yet people gasp and say "LOL LOCK THIS" at the idea of people hacking the **** out of this game

aimbots, maybe not. And while, besides aimbotting, I don't think there is any substitute for hardwork and pure skill, I'm sure this games saturated with cheaters in some way or another. Not all aimbotting, but doing whatever little thing they can and still sucking as the end result.

I don't say this because I'm a sore loser or something, I say this because I'm being realistic. This isnt always the hobby of the most honorable and altruistic.

gl in life thread, you'll need it

that being said the lunixmonster banned romano for hacking, and then banned me for asking why he was banned. I lolled

    um

actually the first kill he tracks a skulk and then when the skulk dies his view snaps back to where it was before he started firing, AKA aimbot...

I have seen 2 or 3 aimbots while playing NS, none of them where on C-D servers(go figure <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->). One was super sloppy, he was afk in marine base and was aiming perfectly at aliens passing by but not shooting and not moving ( what an idiot <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->). I saw one dude that was blatantly speedhacking shooting 3-4 rounds a second with a shotgun in 1.04 and knifing like mad, being pushed a bit he basically said yeah I'm cheating it's fun so you should try(took a video of him and and a screen grab from status in the console and got him permanently banned from that server). One guy was cheating pretty obviously using a wall hack and a speed hack(I recorded him, he was knifing at ~1.3x speeds when comparing normal knifing with him by recording the audio and looking at it in a sound editing program so this was not too obvious, but he messed up and knifed an RT at the same time as another marine which made it apparent that he was cheating), and possible some form of aimbot but not a blatant one(not all aimbots swivel 180 degrees in one frame and shoot at anything that moves, some only 'lock on' when the target is near the center of the screen, doesn't seem to me like too much trouble making an aimbot that moves the crosshair smoothly to the target in which case it would not be that easy to tell).

I have only seen 3 that I am absolutely sure where cheating(and they all got permanently banned, 2 by me and others sending in videos and one because the admin was there to spectate), some more which I could not really tell either way or didn't get a good chance to spectate, wall hacks are by far the hardest to spot IMHO, speedhacks the easiest. Some in plugins have on occasion caused at least skulks to play the bite sound much more frequently than normal without dealing damage at a faster rate but I have only seen this once, I went spec and apparently he didn't hurt buildings faster than normal allthough it sounded like he was biting at 5X speeds at least.

I think exploiting is by far more common. Pistol scripts, bunnyhop scripts(at least when the special command gets removed you will need 'some' timing when bunnyhopping as all the scripts can do without the special command is to spam jump a few times in case you pressed jump to early). Back in <1.04 days the r_drawviewmodel 0 exploit was rampant and testing it out it allowed me to aim MUCH better, I only played on servers which did not allow the removal of the gun model and muzzle flash after that(and I did notice a marked difference when I was alien). The muzzle flash can still be removed sadly(by other means) but it isn't as big an issue now that it is smaller(sprite consistency checking should fix this). I have seen onos stomp backwards(and figured out how this could be done, it sadly isn't blocked on C-D servers either) and I have seen skulks fly around endlessly without making any noise in the old days by invoking a certain impulse command. I have seen people abuse just about every plugin that ever existed such as using lerk lift on newbie gorges to drop them from high alltitudes or generally harasing them even if they figure out that +use hinders lerks from lifting them. I have seen skulks abuse the skulk cling plugin to cling to eachother at a long distance and then stick the clinging(unshootable)skulk out through a wall so it can chomp marines passing by in a cramped passage as well as to stick skulks into places they have no bussiness being such as welded closed areas on custom maps where the marines where keeping several RTs they could not replace once welded in. I have seen people use the /stuck plugin/s to get into naughty places and build IPs/a wall of DCs that could not be removed without sieging just outside marine base. I have seen people do all sorts of naughty things with command consoles and I have seen countless people bhop silently as a marine as well as crouch in certain corners and vents with the purpose of exploting bugged hitboxes. I'm sure there are lots of exploits I'm not aware of, and hopefully most people aren't aware of them either. I consider exploits worse than cheating because exploits aren't generally regarded as naughty in the same way as out right cheating(like aimboting) and thus much more widely spread.
