I'm so glad those botches are going to cost more in 3.0
Onos definitely need teamwork to kill. You can try luring it onto mines, or mass fire from several lmgs can wear down an onos quickly. If you're caught alone, then you're screwed.
To see exactly where the hitboxes are, you will need HLMV - Half Life Model Viewer. You can download it here. It is in step two.
Then you will need to load the models in HLMV. They should be in your Steam>SteamApps>E-mail>Half-Life>ns>Models>Players folder. The fade is alien4 and the onos alien5. Once they are loaded, click the checkbox that says "hitboxes." A bunch of red boxes should pop up around the various parts of the model. The only fade hitbox that takes damage now is the one around it's waste and stomach. The onos's damage-taking hitbox is the big one around the back half of it's body and over it's hindlegs.
And zombie, you CAN kill fades and Onos with LMGs and pistols - I have done so many times.

Wow... seems you haven't played Marines that long.
Overall Marine Tips Against The Higher Lifeforms: When running around with your squad, try listening to the ambience. You should hear footsteps that sound weird, sometimes like something sloshing. This is most likely a Fade. If you hear a thunderous boom, or a sound of very heavy hooves... well... better say "oh no..."
Tip against Fades: Make sure you keep a Fade in sight. Remember to listen to footsteps. Also, if you hear a weird streakish sound, that's the Fade blinking. Make sure you can meet the fade while he's blinking towards you, because he's mostly vulnerable during that time until he gets into range to swipe at you. Keep circle strafing the Fade at close range.
Tip against Onos: Stick with your team (unless your the ultra awesome JP/HMGer/Shotgunner ). Concentrate fire on the Onos at the same time, and you have yourself a dead Onos. This normally works at range, due to the fact that the Onos is a devastating close range assailant.
And overall, make sure your commander has upgraded weapons through the arms lab after a few minutes of playing. These upgrades are critical in killing higher lifeforms.
Fade=Aim for the....er lower Area (OW!)
Onos=Aim for hind legs.
those are where the hitboxes are.
Dont worry there fixed in 3.0
Lerk is a little meh too...
EDIT:They really shouldnt have blocked that word...
Step 2 : Unload Pistol into target
Step 3 : Whip out your knife and stab away
Step 4 : If you run out of knife ammo, might as well bend over
Thouse are the four steps to take down any higher evolution if you have a lmg, pistol, and knife.
A standing fade has horrendous trouble hitting a ducking marine for some reason, the only real way to do it is to look right down and hope you're hittting or duck as well. Once knifed a fade doing that and they were screaming bloody murder at me for it afterwards XD
been there, as the rine of course, though i usaly managed to drop by pistal after unloading the lmg.
But yeah its more or less what these guys said, other solution is to get a hmg, and be able to aim worth a diddly, cus an hmg will cut things down.
Tip against Fades: Make sure you keep a Fade in sight.

Well, not to the extent that you rambo after him as he blinks away. As a fade, I tend not to fight with under 125 hp. That allows me to blink away with little chance of a lvl3 lmg being able to take me down alone.
Once the fade runs, it is not the time to counter-attack. See if the comm is going to drop tf, pg etc, then *go as a group* after the fade.
HTH.
I've pistoled an onos once too.
Er, anyway. What you wanna do, is that if you see a fade blinking away, chances are that you can take down him with one pistol clip if you've got decent aim. (I've done this twice )
Oh yeah, onii are hard but they're not that tough. I had a shotgun on ns_caged once, and I was standing to the left of the main walkway towards the CC, and an onos was standing on the walkway, smashing the buildings in his way. I emptied my whole "clip" into his behind (hitbox area) and he died. The base was saved.
Oh well
The best tip I can think of with fades has been mentioned before: block him. There's nothing more annoying than getting blocked when you are trying to blink out of a nasty situation as a fade, and if you pull it off right you have created the fade's deathtrap.
Killing oni is really hard on your own. Actually its next to impossible, unless the cow is a total newbie. There are some things that might help you take one down though. First of all: keep your distance, unless you have a shotgun. Once you get in stomp range you will have a big disadvantage, and you will most likely die unless you have some teammates to watch your back. Also: try luring the onos in, then start spraying away with your lmg with some teammates. If someone has an hmg or a shotgun and you manage to get the cow to retreat through a corridor, he's a sitting duck. Because the 'vache de l'espace' is so slow and massive, its quite easy to kill it with an hmg or possible with a couple lmg marines. The cow will either reach that corner, heal up, and come back for another run, or die a satisfying death
Good luck
[edit]
My clanmates Oetel and Minoanman created a movie that showed the hitbox flaws for every lifeform in 2.01, but I can't seem to find it right now. When I do I'll be sure to let you know, because it would be very helpful.
[/edit]
- Knowing the hitboxes is very important.
- Blocking fades is extremely useful as blink wont let them past and they panic and dont hit slash.
- Crouch as close to an onos' chest as possible and hit him with everything you have... only works if they trying to devour you.
- Mine traps are very useful for onos and fades. mine trap = 5 mines on one spot.
- Crouch or circle strafe fades.
- Pistol fades as they try to blink away
These are my tips. Oh yeh a good fade is immune to quite a bit of this stuff as they know the tactics. eg: me... I dont suffer any of the above things 'cept mine traps and being pistoled as i run away, coz i get too greedy. A smart fade will also "fly" around the rines head till he has to reload.
Hope this helps your endeavour to kill higher lifeforms.

The key is, as has already been mentioned, know where you're firing. For the Fade, aim for the gut and for the Onos, it's butt. For the Onos, imagine a marine standing up where it's hind legs are... that's the part you can hit.
One tip with the fade is, if you're alone, avoid their first blink. The amount of times i've had a Fade blink at me and then trying to swipe, only to have me jump aside and make them go straight past me is stupid. This buys you an extra few seconds or maybe time to reload. Don't count on it always working, but it has worked a number of times.
Short of the LMG which is, lets face it, pretty crappy unless it's level 3, if you have a shotgun with upgraded weapons you will be dropping fades like flies. We're talking 3-4 well aimed shotgun shots and a dead Fade, and with the shottie's rate of fire, that's not all to hard.
Guilty.

Listen, the hit box of the onos is not the same as the model. While in the soon to come version 3.0 it is, right now you have to aim at specific parts of the onos to actually hit it. You know when you play halflife single player, the size of say a Scientist or a Barney? Imagine a rectange with the same size, inside the onos. Aim for the middle of the onos, where the hitbox is, so you maximize your shots at it. Right now, you are probably just general aiming at it, and this is more effective for the onos than umbra because it enshures(sp?) that you miss it 40% of the time. A single LMGer can take down the current onos, if he knows where to aim, and given enough starting space between him and the onos; it is because of the hitbox problems that it takes a group of marines to take one down, and sometimes even then the onos beats them because they don't aim at its middle.
The same problems apply for the fade, but I am not sure where the hitboxes are exactly, its ingrained in my mind where to shoot but I don't truly know where I am aiming at.
Hope that helps.

Max did that for 3.0; worship him.
just wait till the onos wants to get away. cause this is when he has few hp left. Then crouch behind him and empty all of your ammo into his nuts. he wont see you imediately. so... another important thing of this tactic is that you block him. so maybe he kills you...but it will help your teammates/turrets to bring him down. well perhaps not the turrets cause the are ****. but your teammates. hmm...bad thing is if they are godd onosplayers who eat you while running away. happend to me some times.
ok get a marine or 2 behind them and when they run away (if they dont have redemp) they will get blocked in by you adn they will die. next if they have redemption you must amass your fire as a team to do as much damage as you can quickly. not just one shooter you need several.
