The zombie sitting in front of the flashing computer screen in HL SP was awesome. Maybe make it a dead marine or scientist or something and add it to a map.
Or make an npc marine gone insane due to fear that screams things and shoots at you while huddles in a corner like in Halo (i know, Halo sucks, but THAT part was cool)
How could I forget about that...er...well this is going sorta into Mapping so I might make a post over in the Mapping Forum, and discuss this further, However an NPC gone crazy would probably be a little weird for the Map...I'm thinking about having a recording on a computer start babbling, you know...the whole..."This is station Alpha (blah blah blah)...We have alien activity inside the vessel we need back~ AHHHHHH (Que chomping and squelching sounds)"...that'd be nice <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
NS is bassically like AvP cept if the lighting in NS was the same because you couldn't even see an alien running at you in avp but it's awesome because you start going beserk with your pulse rifle...just like in the movie!
and yes...and bout the "NS is first contact, NS2 will be the war..."
I beleive we've just found our teaser title <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> *sends a chill down my spine*
The AVP models/sounds/sprites i use add quite a bit of scariness. There are sound clips from Aliens so that when you do a scan you hear things like "Something's moving and it aint us!" or "Ive got readings from the front AND behind!". Its pretty sweet stuff. Then theres the fact that all the alien models are black, and the skulk click running noise is replaced with regular footprints of flesh on metal....
Let me give you a few reasons as to why there's no really scary ambience, blood everywhere, corpses, civillian corpses and the like in any of the official maps.
<!--QuoteBegin-Natural Selection Mapping Guidelines+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Natural Selection Mapping Guidelines)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--><b>Avoid Terror and Gore</b> - Natural Selection is about lush, atmospheric sci-fi environments, cooperative strategy, and intense battles. It isn't about scaring the player or horrific environments. The aliens will still be scary, but very dark environments, flickering florescent lights, bodies slumped on rafters, and other staples of the horror genre don't help Natural Selection achieve its goals. Don't place dead colonists anywhere (slumped against walls, in piles, etc.). Pools of blood and dismemberment are also to be avoided. The game doesn't avoid blood and gore completely, but doesn't display lingering dead bodies and gibbed alien flesh. In fact, NS is less gory than Half-Life. This may seem like a senseless guideline, but it will help the game appeal to more people--hopefully resulting in more players, more add-ons, and a broader community.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Found in the guidelines <a href='http://www.natural-selection.org/Mapping_Guidelines.html#Avoid_Terror_and_Gore' target='_blank'>here</a>.
This isn't, of course, to say that you can't do your own customisation here and there, or make a map with all the gore you want in it, but as far as us mappers go, we want our maps to become official, and to do so, that means no blood and guts everywhere.
The quote, also, is not specific to the mapping element of NS, this is the whole idea behind NS, it's intended to be a mod for all ages.
Back in 1.0x I had a kick-**** pack, Vecdran's Damon Elite Marines (with a few changes) and the Evil Vampire aliens; they were all dark and had blood all over them it was pretty dark and scary <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo-->. The Onos... It looked like it was rotting like a zombie that was a pretty scary pack but I never really replaced the sounds, just the music with some really atmospheric stuff that would scare me a lot (then I changed it to fast paced techno so I could bhop better).
I don't think 1.0x models work in 3.0, though, so I'm stuck with the good vanilla aliens and fugly vanilla Marines.

Personally I find it more freaky to wonder WHERE the dead bodies have gone.
At least you can connect with a corpse, but if there's no body, no blood, nothing.......... its like the first 30 minutes of Aliens. Half eaten donuts and cold cups of coffee, lots of signs of a struggle, but no blood or bodies.
<!--QuoteBegin-frostymoose+Feb 22 2004, 01:12 PM--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (frostymoose @ Feb 22 2004, 01:12 PM)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin--> 50 bucks says ns will never be scary. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd--> hmmz, that comes down to personal opinion tho, someone might say it is already. some of these idiots that spend the whole round building DC's in vents scare me, by wondering wot goes on in their heads <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yeah, Necrosis ya have a point, that is eerily creepy <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Oddly I don't think I've seen an official map that has those little "Marie Celeste" touches.
Or things like, say, an escape pod riddled with kharaa bacteria docked to a ship with a lab likewise full of seemingly escaped experiment, then the rest of the facility mostly empty except for a well welded hidey hole with one unwelded way in.
I think maps should tell stories. While its nice to fight in classy facilities, I don't think I've seen one where I could honestly say it tells a story. Since NS isn't all about deathmatches, the maps have the opportunity to tell a little bit about what happened to them and why the NSA have been sent in. In my example, the facility/ship recovered a pod which was from a Kharaa infected ship. Samples were taken and they busted out of the lab. The scientists fled to a "safe room" where they welded down tight to wait for the TSA...... but they forgot that one vent not on the plans......
I find it very unfortunate that Suspense, Shock, and *Horror* were deliberately left out of NS. I mean, Its good how it is, But it could be SOOOO much better. Yes, there are younger players, But isnt Half Life already rated MA13? They shouldnt be playing if they cant deal.
but assuming i'm not just talking to a table lamp or something, i thought you were gone man. whatever. glad to see you're still around the stomping grounds ^_^
Yeah, NS could be so much better, but unfortunately we're stuck with E rated maps and the such...I would love to slap bloodied carcasses all over my ns_terror map (But I'm not, I'm probably going to use Necrosis' idea of missing bodies and messied rooms..prolly find bodies strewn across the Hive rooms floor) but too bad for me there are certain guidelines...I think... <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> Sorry this has nothing to do with making something scary but uhh...I was jus leading off Brigs post.....................
/me points at Brig His fault! /me runs in fear <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif' /><!--endemo-->
i'm sure if you throw defiled cadavres and such about a map, it'd be fine. steam does have a disclaimer on it...
edit: just be careful with the long dark hallways and blinking white lights. as scary as it may be walking into a bloody murder scene room with a strobe light blinkin, that's an epileptic lawsuit waiting to happen.
actualy you cant be sued for that because on the box of every video game and inside every video game manual even durring the install it gives a epilepsy warning and if you want to be even more safe post the same warning inside the readme included witht he map
Dude, if u can take the unreal sounds, especially the ones on that ship in the beginning, u could prob scare urself really nice....i can member how bad the ship scared me.
ya especialy before you get your first weapon when your behind a huge door and you hear screams and the door opens you see a dead body and a shadowy figure run away
i remember doom used to give me nightmares. i'd stop playing because i was too scared to open the red skull key door. i used to sleep in the middle of my bed too. i didn't want to be too close to the window, or too close to the closet door....scary stuff man...
and doom 3 is gonna scare the living crap out of me >_<

the begining bit in unreal was the best part of the whole game <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> the intense fear of knowing that there are 'things' that just killed the whole crew running around behind doors 2 feet to your left, and just around da corner, and that hallway scene man? good god, i think i woke up the neighbours with my shrill girly scream >_< damn unreal doesnt make me feel manly. i sincerly wish NS could be at least pg-13, have any of you seen a pg-13 movie lately?! breasts 'n' machine guns everywhere. and lots of vampires 'n' blood as well, im just not entirely sure what age group flayra wants to have play NS? its just not a game for 10 year olds, sheesh.
the guidlines are if you want the map to have a chance at becoming official right? then why not just make a bloody/scary map and not think about it being official if its a really good map it would be on alot of servers
NS can't be totally scary mostly cuz of the hl engine i don't think Hl will let u c your buddy's mid section get bitten off by a skulk.. maybe in the source engine <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo--> ..but yeh this is a great idea i've been looking for sumthing u make me scared (i don';t know why but i seriously do) gl to u dude <!--emo&::marine::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/marine.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='marine.gif' /><!--endemo-->
you have to difference the meaning of disgusting and scary <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
most people are scared of disgusting things so i say thats the easy way to go <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
