Small is the overstatement of the century.
From what I can tell all the best players quit and now due to shifting baselines the worst are the best, but at a lower level overall. -
Game has always been a sort of cascade effect with the first 5 minutes determining the game.. of course there are times good play sways it or a miraculous kill saves the game but usually its pretty boring.

Don't forget the basically flavour of the month balancing which leads to one maybe two strategies being viable and used, allowing one to accurately predict what a team will do 99 percent of the time in a serious game. -
