3 reasons why you shouldn't play this game that much longer

<div class="IPBDescription">This is serious....</div>I started playing this game back in 1.04... wow those were the days. Anyway this game is pretty much dead right now and for the first time in what 2 or 3 years I didn't install NS after I reformatted. (I reformat once every 3 months btw). Two weeks ago I was playing this game more than 8 hours a week or so. Sure it was fun, but not as fun as before. So this is xtc's 3 reasons why you shouldn't reinstall NS when you next reformat. (talking about PUBNS only, not competitive)
1. For all of you who played 1.04, you can all agree with me that 1.04 was a lot more FUN than 3.2. The current release is just so F****** boring. Game Starts. A node or two goes down. A attempt to take down a hive. Hive goes down, or stays up. Fades annoy and die. Marines pressure and die. Game ends with a recycle or plain alien loss due to lack of nodes and higher lifeforms with 1 hive. It is the same stupid BS over and over again.
I mean at least in 1.04 there were 4 hour games where even if marines had jetpacks and level 3 hmgs, or the aliens had 3 hives the game was still going on. I don't remember that much repitition in 1.04 (besides the jetpack rush which was lame sometimes) at all. Over the years, NS has just gotten ishtier and ishtier. It all started with 2.0, and it went downhill from there. 3.0 beta 5 was pretty fun though because ramboing as a marine was pretty enjoyable.
2. The community is crap. There is no decent server to play on. Tactical Gamer is full of morons now because of the second server opening up, and NS armslab isn't too far behind in that department. Every other server has 5 million level combat servers with BS_1 which basically scares any decent competitive player away.
Then theres the ###### like me that go into servers, and either rape everyone or die because our team blows. And you guys wonder why we cry for shotguns in pubs. Better off giving it to us, than some noob with a 1-24 score.
3. For all of you who are looking forward to the next NS, and the only reason why you play this build is because your waiting for the next one go to your system 32 folder and hit these buttons in order: (ctrl + a), delete, enter. News flash, you are waiting for a new version of NS from the same people who couldn't rebuild the site and forums within a year after getting hacked. If it took a year to get the forums back, then by the time I im 30 (I'm 18) the new version of NS will be out
See most of you in 2 weeks.

Also, a quick warning before the bell. If this thread dissolves into flames, it WILL be locked in short order, so think before you post.
It's just flame bait as far as I can see.
Let's dissect this post.
First, 1.04 lovin's. It was fun because it was new. Plenty of these posts to go around.
Second, bitterness toward the community. I quite disagree. 3.2 has seen a resurgence in quality players from what I can see. Not as many players overall, but the ratios are better. Many older players are jaded. This is the only point I can see any discussion about, but really, it's the irony in that section that intrigues me.
Thirdly, bitterness toward the devs. That horse became pulp about 2 months ago. Whoop-dee-doo.
Where can we go with this discussion? All I see are the many ways we should warn about those awful doors and how they can hit people when they leave through them. Seriously, here we have another jaded 1.0x player that just wanted to vent. I'd like to be proven wrong, but does anyone honestly think any sort of useful discussion can come of this?
but the feeling when you find one is epic...
i played a 3-hour long one for some time ago...
I miss esports.no...

Anyone know what happened to the servers?
Aside from that though, he has a point: the most important part of NS (the community) is composed, in far more magnitude than is reasonable, of A) screaming, spoiled, 10-year-old counterstrike rejects, and B) impatient, arrogant, condescending vets that treat everyone outside of their clique as though they're subhuman.
Neither one of these groups wants to deal with the other, but they're being forced to, like people are forced to live in a city with each other. I refer to this as NYE or "The New York Effect".
I guess that's the point. <b>Online game development is vastly different than single player game dev. It isn't just the creation of a digital playground, it's the social science of fostering positive communities within that arena. <!--coloro:red--><span style="color:red"><!--/coloro-->If I could pick any one thing to be done differently in NS2, that would probably be it<!--colorc--></span><!--/colorc-->.</b>
That, and make sure the game still has open-ended skill options.
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->honestly think any sort of useful discussion can come of this?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
useful no, but discussion, yes.
The problem for me is and has always been, i cant play without making sure im in the right frame of mind BEFORE i join. I just do a self attitude test.
For me the correct attitude means been able to deal with any negative, unfriendly or unhelpfull people. My Team can even loose several games in a row, just to have 1 Team win a day is enough for me.
I like breeding confidence in my team and enjoy encouraging them (esp on mic).
I have played so many games where players have bad attitudes, almost destroying the current round , only to be silenced with soothing words of encouragement or support, I see so many peoples behaviors change instantly, and start believing in each other, its just human nature.
I like distilling the notion that its Cool to be a <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tsa.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::tsa::" border="0" alt="tsa.gif" /> Team player, its contagous <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />
Hero's come & go, the TEAM LIVES ON
NS CLASSIC FOREVER !!
I just wish i had more time in my life these days to play, as im 32, and real life tends to interfere with NS
<!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->and B) impatient, arrogant, condescending vets that treat everyone outside of their clique as though they're subhuman.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
2. agree, but everyone is guilty of this because they dont promote teamwork in game, probably because its such a goddamn headache and some people just DONT listen even if everyone else is :O
3. meh, cry me a river.
I still like NS, and can see myself playing it now and then until NS2 comes out, whenever that is. My issue is with the community, not the game. Harrower pretty much summed it up for me.
<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Whats wrong with the community, thats one of the reasons why I have not even thought about leaving
In my defense I have pretty much always treated everyone as if they are subhuman until proven otherwise. Myself included. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=";)" border="0" alt="wink-fix.gif" />
That being said, having played from release on comp ns and pub, I disagree with xtc as well. The ns community is horrid. That's a given. The game itself keeps improving.
The reason so many people hold on to their first ns experience, be it 1.0 or whatever, as the best version is because they had the added joy of discovery in figuring out the basics of the game. They probably have a few specific things they miss about that time that are gone, be that fellow players they spent time with or one specific aspect of the game. It's like all first loves, better in the minds eye then in reality.
That line of thought covers early ns in many ways. The reason you had 4 hour games in 1.0 wasn't because the game was balanced well for four hour games. It was because no one knew how to play. Like two virgins on their wedding night neither team could seem to figure out what to do. I'm sure no one really wants to go back to that, right? Well, ok maybe the people that still haven't figured out what to do.
In a lot of ways, I'm in the same boat xtc is. I miss alot of the players who I've known over the years. I can look at the best shots/comms/fades on my server today and know they aren't the same grade of player I knew 2 or three years ago. The teamwork isn't there. Many of the players left are the ones who didn't want to learn and drove the others out. I find myself at the top of the scoreboard on occassion and wonder what the world has come to.
Meanwhile, the game of NS itself is really as close to perfection as I ever expected to see. Everytime I see a single game breaking problem like structure blocking fixed, I get a new lease on NS. Mind you, I don't like the fix, but that's still better than the problem. Of course, in 10 years time maybe NS will be finished to my satisfaction. That would be a first. I'm picky.
By the same token, I get to enjoy watching and helping new members of the ns community learn the basics, meet new people, and have a good laugh when someone decides I'm good at the game. I really enjoy alot of the new players I meet every month playing ns, and the rest well...
Those who can't learn currenlty listed as 619 in my banned.cfg.
That being said, it's the best version of NS yet. While the community as a whole makes my soul bleed for humanity I've managed to find a small subset of it I enjoy. I can only suggest xtc, and the rest of the unhappy players, do the same.
Oh, and those of you not xtc are welcome to try the oldf server. Be advised, ff is on and failing to help your team to the best of your ability is considered griefing/bannable.
Obviously there were some good players back in 1.04 who quickly learnt the insides and outsides of the game, but most peoples views of 1.04 are clouded by nostalgia and that is why 1.04 servers do not take off the ground. People play on them till they realise why the gameplay was updated and polished in future versions.
Everything's said already a million times, but here are some thingys to sum up.
Name one reason why 1.04 was better. Alien lifeforms had very little to learn about and marines just had to hold till jp hmg. Repetetive as it gets. 3.2 has 3 viable chambers, many different teching options, an amazing amout of stuff to learn and ect. Who wants to play 4 hrs in a deadlock anyway.
The community is small, nothing you can really do about it. Some players are annoying, some just plain nasty and so on, but I've never had much trouble with anyone.
Btw why is competetive play a joke? It fixes the annoying scene and teamwork issues, has more options than public and is great fun too.
Oh and I've never found 3.2 that repetetive. Pretty much every game can be simpified with a couple of sentences if someone wants to. Wow for example: level up. join up with some other guys. kill some big bad guys. get better stuff. repeat. And I haven't even have played the game. Still 8 million people play it, there must be something more in it.

P.S. 1.04 was horrible without a good gorge . it was all about the race to get the second hive and web the jps <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":(" border="0" alt="sad-fix.gif" />
If you aren't using the strategy instructed from competitive players or begging them to teach you how to play properly, you aren't playing NS correctly. Also, the only way to have fun is to join a clan.
Thumbs up. Go team.
If u don't like the game :

This quite sums it up. Puzl, how can one DERAIL a thread which STARTS with a post full of drama? No offence to anyone but the way he's saying goodbye to NS, it looks like he's married to ns and going to divorce now or something. What a bunch of drama for nothing.
I for one have played this game since 1.04 and I'm quite happy with the current version. I think ns as a game generally improved much since 1.04. (can't really see why the devs changed the armor bonus & the fade speed though but OK that's not the discussion at the moment)
The guys who disagree with me when I say the current version is better then 1.04, just take the fact already that 1.04 will never come back and move on? If you don't like ns anymore why not trash it and play other games or do something else in ur life instead of writing a script for a drama-movie?
I've been playing since 1.04 and all the fuss about it seems to work around - longer games. I've been seeing this with 3.2 beta 2 a lot, games have been extend into hours lately on it. (depending on how well aliens work together that is...) but I've said this before on other threads, under what costs? aliens have been reduced in speeds so badly, they are targets more then anything now. (especially fades or lerks and yes even with celerity...) Again, some will disagree (mostly those that love marines...) but is reducing aliens like that good for: 1. extand games?
2. enforce team work?
3. both of those?
So playing marines is now what? easy mode? I know many would say, depends on comm, players and so on...I'm just tired of reading changelogs of how things are reduced on aliens and increased on marines, its not fair. The only way we can have marines win against an alien is if we have handycap aliens attack them. hehe! <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/marine.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::marine::" border="0" alt="marine.gif" />
Whatever our problems are right now, most of them are in the past. We have a new version, we have forums, we have progress on NS2 and we have an awesome community that we are proud to be a part of. You can't have such a large and vibrant community without some negativity, and you can't hide that negativity under the rug and hope it goes away. In the long run that will cause more damage than it attempts to prevent.
I for one see my NS glass as half-full, and I will never give up on this game as long as we have people playing it. Our beta has more players than most source mods have in total. We got an honourable mention at the moddb awards. There's a lot of life in us yet, and we can handle a few players who can't quit with dignity but who insist on spreading their 'NS IS DEAD' trolling.
I hope that NS2 comes out eventually but knowing the developers I'm not going to hold my breath. I just hope that Fortress Forever, TFC2, or ET:QW come out soon.
would I want it back? god no but I miss it lol, really dumbed down marine play taking it out, people go on and on about how 1.0 was easy mode but there are always games within games <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" />
Anyways, the armslab thread is a moot point anyway as I'm sure a lot regulars have figured out that it is not around anymore. That may change in the future, but I highly doubt it.
I will rephrase my post then. Since the server communities are getting smaller and smaller it forces players to adopt a rules policy that they would never really wanted to follow, but they have to in order to play a decent game of NS. Right now its a "Server's Market" a year ago, if someone didn't like the rules etc.. etc.. they could just join another server community. Nowadays there are really no alternative communities to goto so players just quit the game.
Its a combination of the gameplay and the lack of server options that cause people to leave, not just the patches.
