Bioshock Spoiler Thread

<div class="IPBDescription">time to test the new 'spoiler' tags!</div>OK, people have been complaining about spoilers in the bioshock demo thread, even though I don't think there have been any real spoilers in it yet... but it's about time we had a real spoiler thread. If this is unacceptable for some reason, even though it's clearly marked as a spoiler thread, feel free to lock it.

I just beat the game for the first time, after saving all little sisters, and I have a lot of questions unanswered still. off the top of my head:
<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>
If Ryan knew you were being controlled, why didn't he stop you from killing him?
Why didn't he send you after Atlas rather than letting Atlas send you after him?
Why did Fontaine pretend he was the fictional Atlas over the radio to you when he could have just as easily controlled you without masking his identity?</span>

And something that bothered me:
<span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>They took at least some pains to develop Sander's character... but then if you decide not to kill him and later go to his apartment, he'll come down and attack you for so much as plinking a note on the piano... I expected more from him by that point in the game...</span>

Also, the game was pretty darn easy, up to and including the final boss fight. I literally had mostly full ammo for every single weapon for most of the game. full money, full medpacks and psy hypos, even full crafting materials... maybe I would have spent more ammo if I were playing on 'hard' instead of 'normal'. but I found the wrench to be the most useful weapon vs. splicers. if you spliced yourself with all the melee and stealth tonics, you were a wrench killin' machine, and there were no augs that boosted ranged weapon damage, besides maybe the research multiplier augs. aiming ranged weapons wasn't easy for me for some reason, and when choosing between like 50 units of napalm, or a full tommygun clip, or 2 quick swings of the wrench, the choice was easy. in the end, it was 1 swing to bring down a thuggish, houdini, or spider splicer, and just 2 to 4 to bring down a nitro or leadhead (or 1 or 2 from behind). the wrench has the added bonus of keeping leadheads off balance so they're not unloading on you, making it hard for you to aim a ranged weapon back at them.

also, I very rarely used plasmids. it's a shame since they're supposed to be a core feature in the game, but I just didn't find them that necessary. the occasional lightning to short out a camera or turret and that was all. so many of the weapons and plasmids in this game are just like toys. while it was cool that the demo videos showed someone putting proximity mines on a piece of debris and then using telekinesis to launch the debris at an enemy... but why do that when you can just put a proximity mine in front of the enemy? and why do THAT when you can just launch the mine directly AT the enemy and leave no room for error?

anyway, that's all I've got to say for now. Time to go back for a second playthrough killing all the little girls >:D

    I just finished the game and recieved the "Bad" ending, I killed all of the Little Sisters. And the ending truly was bad, I hope the other ones aren't short and simple like that one.

    the 'good' ending was really short and simple... like, 45 second cinematic and many questions left unanswered =p but the game was quite fun and that's what matters most.

    I already went through it for the "Good" ending, and am currently going through it again for the "bad' one.

    I have to go on vacation for a week starting tommorow, though. Its weird, kinda wish i didnt. Just want to play more Bioshock.

    I got the bad ending, since apparently if you kill even one Little Sister, that's what you get. I saved and harvested them equally, until Atlas betrayed me, and then I saved all of them. ######s.

    I decided to just watch the good ending on YouTube. And while it was nice and sweet, the evil ending was cooler. I mean, it's nice to have a family and all that, but there is something to be said about <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>unleashing your army of Splicers on the world, and having a bunch of nuclear weapon armed submarines, ruling from your underwater fortress.</span>

    Also, these spoiler tags kind of suck. I still have to highlight. I wish they were the mouse-over kind.

    I found the game to be fairly difficult on normal. I frequently found myself running low on ammo, but that may just be because of the way I play.

    Also, the freezing plasmid sucks, but Insect Swarm is ######ing awesome.

    My friend and I just finished playing some, and toward the end... right before <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>Andrew Ryan</span> there's an Audio Recording I somehow forgot to listen to... and it's sad and made me feel uncomfortable. It a recording of Suchong instructing <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>the player (as a child)</span> to break a puppy's neck...

    Plasmid guide!

    There are two different primary types of plasmids. There are directly offensive plasmids, which directly attack the enemy and environment with damage or elemental effects. There are also indirectly offensive plasmids, which manipulate the environment, which may cause the enemy actors to harm themselves or each other.

    Direct Plasmids

    <!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->Electro Bolt<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

    Location
    (1) Welcome to rapture, main hall. You need it to progress in the game.
    (2) Any garden, Arcadia+.
    (3) Any garden, Fort Frolic+

    Electro Bolt plasmid unleashes a bolt of lighting at enemy actors. If the enemy actor is not standing in water, they will take 0 damage and be stunned in place. If a splicer is stunned, the next hit you deal to him will deal bonus damage, and he is no longer stunned. If an electronic element is stunned, you can then Hack (v) it, or hit it for bonus damage. If the enemy target is standing in water, then electro bolt will deal damage, stun for an extended period, and spread to any other enemy in the water, who also takes damage and is stunned. Higher levels of electro bolt deal additional damage to water targets and stun all targets for longer. Some enemies may resist a weak electro bolt and not be stunned at all.

    <!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->Incinerate!<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->

    Location
    (1) Eternal Flame pavilion, medical. Needed for progress.
    (2) Any garden, Fort Frolic+
    (3) Any garden,

    Incinerate will cause enemies and objects to set on fire. Additional applications of incinerate will cause additional fire damage and duration. If used on one of the oil barrels or puddles which seem quite frequent in Rapture then they will be set on fire and may even explode, dealing plenty of damage to anything standing in the area. Incinerate will also melt snow, allowing you to open doors and get items covered by it.

    <!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->Winter Blast<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
    (1) Any garden, Neptune's Bounty+
    (2) Any garden, Fort Frolic+
    (3) Any garden,

    Winter blast will freeze targets. They will remain frozen, and the frozen time will increase with higher levels on winter blast. If you kill an enemy before he thaws (IE, you reduce his life to zero before the life meter becomes unfrozen) you will kill him and he will shatter, leaving no corpse. Otherwise he will take no damage. If used on an electronic enemy that can be hacked, you will freeze the enemy and allow a hack like before. However, hacking a frozen enemy is perfered as doing slow will slow down the fluid and make the hack easier. Props which can be hacked can not be frozen in this way.

    <!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->Wind Trap<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
    (1) Any Garden, Arcadia+
    (2) Any Garden,
    (3) ?

    Wind trap creates a ground-based vortex of air when used. When an enemy walks over this vortex, they will be tossed in the air, and will take damage based on how far they fall. Higher levels of wind trap toss the enemy further. Each wind trap will only "toss" one enemy, so if you wish to kill a single splicer with wind trap will you probally need to place several.

    <!--sizeo:3--><span style="font-size:12pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->Insect Swarm<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec-->
    (1)Any Garden, Farmer's Market+
    (2)Any Garden, Fort frolic+
    (3)Any Garden,

    Insect swarm allows you to project a wave of insects at foes. Any foe hit by this wave will be incapacitated by a swarm of any mutant bees for quite some time. These will deal minor damage over time, can not be put out or otherwise eliminated (unlike fire) and the wave does not stop when it strikes one enemy, allowing it to hit many foes with one attack. Repeated swarms will increase the damage and duration.

    More later. going to leave soon.

    endgame melee/stealth build: wrench lurker 1 and 2, wrench jockey 1 and 2, damage research 1 and 2, sportboost 1 and 2, natural camo, bloodlust. with all enemies fully researched, you'll be 1 shotting every splicer with the wrench before they even know you exist, and you can save all that good ammo for the bosses. almost makes the game too easy.
  • MantridMantrid Lockpick Join Date: 2003-12-07 Member: 24109Members
    Blood Lust is the most badass Gene Tonic ever. Invent it as soon as you can. That, plus some tonics that upgrade your wrench damage, and either let you electrocute or freeze people, and you will be a god.

    Electric skin is pretty badass too.

    Fully Researching Turrets and Cameras allows you to instantly auto-hack them, it rules not having to play the damn minigame all the time. I don't know if it works on Security Bots but I wouldn't doubt it.

  • MantaManta Join Date: 2005-01-12 Member: 35056Members
    I used plasmids a lot; then again, I didn't go for a precise "build." I just picked whatever was useful, and I found a lot of the plasmids to come in handy. Electro bolt was great for hacking and saved my skin a few times when I went up against Big Daddies. I didn't have any of those wrench upgrades, so Telekinesis was my weapon of choice (throw a suitcase at a splicer's head and watch them drop).

    As for your questions, DiscoZombie:

    <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>
    1. If Ryan knew you were being controlled, why didn't he stop you from killing him?

    2. Why didn't he send you after Atlas rather than letting Atlas send you after him?

    3. Why did Fontaine pretend he was the fictional Atlas over the radio to you when he could have just as easily controlled you without masking his identity?

    1. My interpretation is that once you actually got into his office, he realized that he had his back to the wall, since his biggest defense - the mag locks on his office door - had been shut down. At that point, his choices were either to die there and then, or face an inevitable death at the hands of Fontaine, or worse, being completely under the rule of Fontaine. Remember, he founded an entire city on his Objectivist ideals. He hammered in his point about being a master, rather than a slave, when he ordered you to kill him.

    2. I don't think he knew for sure that you were still out there. On that matter, I think it was Atlas/Fontaine who sent you to the surface in the first place; as a result, he was the only one who had any contact with you. Once you arrived in the city, I don't think Ryan actually knew it was you right away.

    3. My guess is that it probably would've been much easier not to constantly ask, "Would you kindly do this and that?" Also, he had been pretending he was Atlas long before your arrival at the city. Fontaine had "died" a couple years before the story, coming back with a new identity. Upon the player's arrival, he still has several followers, such as the short-lived Johnny as well as Peach Wilkins.
    </span>

    And also, it makes the game better with the twists and turns. If you knew from the beginning that you were just sent to kill Ryan, the game would have a bad story.

    In reality, no one would need to mask themselves as there's no real point. But then again, it'd just make for bad game.

    good points, both of you <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" />

    here's a pretty unimportant but nagging question - there was only one room in the whole game I couldn't figure out how to get into... well, I should say, one room that was still grayed out on my map when I beat the game. It was in Fort Frolic, down some stairs past the icy hallway. there was a sign above it that says something like "More shopping downstairs." my only guess is that might be where you wake up if you're going for the 'bad' ending? also, is there any way to get into <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>sander's bedroom without killing him? it really bothers me that you almost befriend that nutjob and then he comes and attacks you if you disturb the dance. seemed sort of out-of-character for him at that point, and I was hoping to not have to kill him.</span>
  • MantaManta Join Date: 2005-01-12 Member: 35056Members
    I felt the same way until I realized that he was trying to kill me and possibly do to me what he'd done to everyone else in Fort Frolic. And no, I don't think there's another way, especially if you've set him off already.

    Actually, you can and most have, skip that room. I did.

    In that area where the stairs are, there's a place called "Sinclaire Spiritual." Behind the counter of the store is a switch which opens the stairs in the main area. But after you hit the switch you also open the basement of the store, which holds a Power to the People Machine.

    doh... good eyes. and here I thought I couldn't possibly have been more thorough in my explorations...

    anyone notice how much this game has in common with Stubbs the Zombie?

    Stubbs: Zombie apocalypse FPS-style game that takes place in a 50's futuristic utopia run by a Randian megalomaniac businessman.
    BioShock: Zombie apocalypse FPS-style game that takes place in a 50's futuristic utopia run by a Randian megalomaniac businessman.

    major differences are that BioShock takes itself seriously and Stubbs did not. <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> the games aren't really all that similar, it's just an odd sort of setting for two developers to come up with independently. I have to wonder if BioShock took any inspiration from Stubbs, silly a game as it may have been... or did they both just take their inspiration from Atlas Shrugged.

That and I HATE protect missions in the first place <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tounge.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":p" border="0" alt="tounge.gif" /> I got through a good chunk (she harvested 3 or 4 dead bodies) before she died and I rage quit. No real point to this aside from ranting.</span><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->
    yep, you're definitely close to the end. I'd suggest <span style='color:#000000;background:#000000'>using your wrench and taking advantage of the fact that the splicers won't attack you until you attack them. just run up to their faces swinging like crazy. they drop real quick. of course when I did that part I was fully melee spliced - if you're not, you might have better luck with shotgun blasts...</span>
