dunno if i've already replied to this thread, but..

    my mates all LOVED NS.

well, in all fairness, we did play it two years back (less expectations) or so, and MOSTLY it was in a LAN/netcafe environment - so more fun all around.

I could never convince my friends to play.
They would sit and watch for a long time. they would watch me comm, or play and shout orders to people. "Look! one over there, kill it! kill it!"

everyone always said it was too fast and didnt know what was going on. but ffs thats what makes ns so badass. No game is more fluid or fast changing. A FPS RTS, ######ing brillant. Im a strategy player at heart so NS was always fun.

NS was never for the casual gamer. If you wanted to play it well, it took time to learn the basics, the maps, the ideas, the most used strats, what works, what doesnt, where to place buildings in the best place....it just takes time.

######, i still remember ######ing about how to upgrade my gun from the arms lab. I would walk over to it and press E wondering why my pistol didnt look like the one on the screen.

But hell, I made plenty of friends on the only server i ever played on.
NAR which became IAM. Always had experienced players, great server, even was admin and got banned once or twice. Good times.

NS2 needs to get here fast, Im almost drolling.

My friend said it was "too fast"

granted, this guy isn't very gifted in the art of gaming, and doesn't have much patience for these types of games, so i understand where he was coming from

he also needed me to tell him everything that was going on, so i guess also a lack of knowledge beforehand led to a rather poor experience on his part

The main complaint I've heard is its "too confusing".

People are pretty damn slow plain and simple, anyones whos a quick learner and plays in a raid guild in WoW knows exactly what I mean.

You basically will need to have an ingame tutorial for EVERYTHING! As people suck and need their hand held like a child when it comes to anything even remotely more complicated than "run around and shoot stuff"

ie, pick up a new gun -> some sort of onscreen or audio tutorial(kinda like bf2/bf2142) begins to play
look at a building you've never seen before -> same thing

stuff like that, as well as an offline 1 player tutorial mode for the more complicated things.

my friends dont like ns, cause.. the graphic is too old ^^ and its as real as "crysis" or other next gen shooter..

    - the most are counterstrike nerds, always trying to rush and dont follow the commands from the commander and so on..
    - things like, ooo i dont understand this game, how.. what i have to do? .. what is this <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> ..
    - always crying when a skulk hang on a wall and kill them from behind.. ^^

    one sentence.. its to fast and to complicated for them^^ .. i dont understand them <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin-fix.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":D" border="0" alt="biggrin-fix.gif" /> .. this is the best MOD ever :]] ..

My friends all thought NS was the greatest game, until they realized the community mostly consisted of elitist jerks. For a dying/dead game, this community sure doesn't want more people playing it imo.

Well, who do you think keeps playing dead games? People who are really good at the game and who are attached to it. They're not all elitists, but the ones who talk usually are.

Most 'elitists' I've seen are people who have just realized how to play ns_siege007 and want it everyone to be able to play it on their way. Of course some skilled people are whiny tards too, including me here and there, but it definitely isn't only the skilled players.

It's unfortunate that ns_siege007 has to be used as a reference here. I think here the definition of "elitism" is open for interpretation as well since there are so many uses for it.

    <a href="http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/elitism" target="_blank">http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/elitism</a>

    1. The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
    2.
    a. The sense of entitlement enjoyed by such a group or class.
    b. Control, rule, or domination by such a group or class.

My friends don't like NS mainly due to its dificult and speed, they feel annoyed when a fade/skull kick their asses moving like a thunther and can't shoot a single round before they died, they are occasional gamers that haven't the patience enough to learn the basics of this game.
I hope NS2 be more friendly to this kind of players.

Started playing this week for the first time and I'm loving it more and more.
The concept and they way it has been realised are excellent for a hl mod, the atmosphere in the maps is awsome + the maps have better quality than most of the modern day mp maps in the source games.
It started kinda bumpy , joined a server with strange messed up settings, got cursed at for running in wrong directions and for dieing to much because I was in the map looking where I was going.
But then it happened I joined a server where people played as a team, a commander that was communicating to the team over the voice chat and 12 marines holding a corridor covering all angles, bullets flying everywhere, the sound of little feet moving in vents overhead.
And that is what makes a great game in my opinion , moments like that make it interesting and fun + it felt like you where in an aliens movie <img src="style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/marine.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="::marine::" border="0" alt="marine.gif" /> .

Just to show that when you give something a try for longer than 5 min you can start to love a thing.

    Amen, brother!

Ah yeah, but the argument to that is that people shouldn't have ###### experiences in their first 5 minutes, so you need to make the first 5 minutes worthwhile.
