Ya i think Gerbers axe looks nice with that flat edge. It's got that primitive man, from the future, theme going. Me thinks that Gerbers already been through the "what looks better" people-reviewing process to arrive at the flat edge design.
O ok the devs went with the flat edge in the rendered version used in-game, and it's only the one concept drawing that shows it curved.
I see in that drawing the name "ALTERRA"... why can't they use "Altera"... do the devs have more fear of the FPGA company Altera (err it takes forever to install Quartus 2, and compiling vhdl sucks!!!!!!!!!), then they do from Gerber?
The pistol raises some questions for me. What ever happened to the taser? Oh and it's obvious the (awesome looking) pistol uses batteries, but where are they located? I don't see any battery cover. My guess is in between the laser-sight and the pistol grip. Does this also mean a laser dot will show up ingame?
Beautiful as allways, really nice details on both of the models. I love the idea of the folding axe instead of the old knive as it didnt feel right. one question will the gun have alt-fire if yes can you talk about it, same goes for the axe? keep up the good work.

The Axes' work is actually just good old physics (momentum + sharp surface of contact)... unless the laws of physics changed in the future... yeah lol ! I'll be honest here, this axe looks more like a razor.
In about an hour or two you'll probably get your first group of posts claiming that the axe design will ruin ns forever. Please don't listen. I could not be happier with the way these backup weapons turned out. That gritty, metal, factory made feel that is so distinctive of ns is there in spades, and as a marine, I'd love having a trusty, convenient, collapsible axe any day rather than some kinda funky taser when going up against malevolent lifeforms.
Also, gotta love the thought that you guys put into this stuff. Not many teams would put the sort of effort towards logic or accuracy behind the bullet eject mechanism that you did.
All in all, you're doing great. Can't wait to see the alpha.

Pistol looks cool (hope all guns have a unified, futuristic ammo readout), axe looks good too. I don't mind the square edge, since it uses "nanites" to keep sharp or whatever. I think the animation of the axe is just as important if not more than the look of it. Something you can whip out and desperately jam into the skull of an alien, or hack into an alien chamber or RT. Definitely give it some force when swinging it.
Hey Devs, I am kinda new to the whole NS2 scene but I gotta tell ya the pistol is freaking sweet I love it. The old WWII luger action was genious. Nice work. Love the axe as well, and like spellman said I like the curve a little better but hey if we can't then we can't still love it though.
The pistol is great, I really love the design and animation. The axe looks a bit weak though, it looks like the blade is much lighter than the handle, and those 2 slits on the blade make it look even lighter. I'm sure strong animations and heavy sounds will help make it feel strong. Overall I'm liking the weapons, good work!

I would have to agree with this. maybe something like make it a little bigger somehow? i dont know what it is but the blade does look off when you see it in the marines hand in the in game screen shot. the pistol however i would say looks great.

I really like the 2SEC. I'm especially fond of the screenshot of the idle animation. It has the right sort of feel to it: the marine looks as if he is prepared to grab and pull on the very air to propel himself towards his target, increasing the power of his cleaving hack.
Also, what I read from the news post is that you are decreasing the rate of attack, but increasing damage output, which I really like aswell. Instead of flailing his ns1 fork around, hoping for a lucky slash or two, pulling out the 2SEC is a calculated (if quick, in a dire situation!) move, followed by prepared swings.
Making the edge curved like in my mockup would also further remove the model from the real life GERBER foldable axe that FocusedWolf posted (which clearly appears to have been the reference for UWE's 2Sec) and any possible copyrights infringements or some such? Don't really know if copyrights even apply or patent or whatever, since games have been creating replicas of AK-47's and every other weapon since forever.
I'm not saying I don't like the flat edge but the curved edge definently gives it more of an Oomph imho, but I will hack away happily no matter what the shape.
Holy crap this is sexy! I really love the new melee weapon idea! Although could it be a player's choice of which melee weapon they want? The choice of a knife or axe.
Even the blade of the flat-edged Gerber Axe was designed to have that heavy forward weight that makes axes so distinctive. The flat model in the Dev mockup is basically just a straight rectangle, and so looks a bit unbalanced.
I'm a fan of Cruor's mild curve myself, but at least give the model some weight.

QUOTE (Cruor @ Mar 6 2010, 01:58 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Loving them both, but I have to agree that the axe could have used some curvature along it's chopping edge and not the straight line finish.
The curvature on normal axes are there to facilitate easy removal when it is lodged in tree etc. Having it straight means it gets stuck more often than not. Especially if you've lodged it in the bone plate of an onoses skull and he is looking angrily at you as you try in vain to remove your axe.
But I realize at this point with the model finalized, it would be a pain to modify it to have some curvature, but despite that I figured I'd make a quick modified mockup of how it could look and here it is:

I recall for the Rainbow Six games (specifically Raven Shield) that they had to get permission from gun companies to use the gun name in the game.
I did a quick google which revealed games like Stalker and Counterstrike Source did not use the real names of guns for their games.
So maybe physical likeness imitation is OK, so long as the devs don't call it a "Kick Axe".
----------------------
I was just thinking about the curved blade. Wouldn't that provide for a larger blade surface area as well as better focus of force for better penetration?
Only thing better would be a serrated edge, for even greater surface area. Although real axes don't have this probably because it sucks to sharpen, and perhaps the edge it not so much a factor as the force + weight of the axe head. This is why if you look at the Gerber version, the blade is not like a flat piece of sheet metal with a edge (like a knife), but is thicker (to add weight). For the same reason it does not make sense to have gouges cut in the blade to reduce weight like the devs have done (unless you wanted something in between a knife and a axe, but not good for either role i.e. to light of an axe to chop, and no way to quickly slash like a knife + less cutting surface then a knife has).
