Axe first impression: <i>What the **** is that?</i> But it quickly grows on you. After a few seconds ye ole brain is thinking more along the lines of "chop chop, doggy doggy!" It's fun, damnit! Like the design actually, would be nice with a grappling function to the blade, to hold alien in place while ohters chop at it :)
Gun: Absolutely OK. Actually, I recall a Finish project with a similar gun aimed at (pun? wtf?) reducing the recoil effect by tilting the handle at an extreme angle. So it actually is a quite realistic solution. Though, I believe the Finish gun never made it on the market.
Axe me a question ^^ Sorry, i've had to much L4D last year to drink :p
I would sugest a lightsaber or at least a chainsaw so you can cut an Onos down more easily :D Come here you feisty alien, i've got an axe and i won't hesitate to use it, just a moment hold still, i just have to open it up, just a sec ...! Looking forward to see the bow and arrow models ;)
Just kidding, how did you guys implement the axe to look cool in a fight, will it stick in an aliens model or is it just a simple swing and swing and swing and swing more to do damage? I just played this source mod knights, pirates, ... 2 and this was just what i don't like about medieval weapons in games, for the most developers it is "easy" to make bullet impacts look cool but medieval style tomerhawks are tricky i belive.
Marines idling with the Axe equipped should perform the <b>Lumberjack song by Monthy Python</b>, that's all I ask :) and maybe a little curvator which was suggested above (even if the "real" axe doesn't have that, it just looks better)
He's a lumberjack and he's okay He sleeps all night and he works all day.
I cut down hives, I eat my lunch, I like to shoot wild gorges,
He cuts down hives, He eats his lunch He likes to shoot wild gorges ...
OH please come on, WHERES MY KNIFE??? OMFG an axe? WTF are u crazy? im loving this game but, OMFG AXE?
The gun looks cool, i would preffer something like, pistol in right hand and the knife in left hand,or something like that, but NEVER an axe? what is this, the lumbrejack rhines? NO ! ! !
Sorry folks, but axe in space? one thing i really like in NS are the reality. A marine can kill with a axe, but can cut a rooft or a cable in space, or open a door if ns is a real thing happening.
Dont like the axe! a knife are more cool and useful :( Why dont put the axe as a random item on the maps? i dont know... trying to dont give any more ideas to help u guys to finish the game in this year!
The pistol was always going to look good, am glad with how it turned out. I was more impressed to see the pistol than the lerk in the screenshot last week!
Will have to read what others think of the Axe but I love it. A weapon that doesn't allow the same "split second" ruination of skulk attacks (extremely frustrating in NS1 given the ease at which you can aim a knife attack against a skulk in your face), yet with careful use can be used effectively to take down that last skulk when you're out of ammo and the skulk is coming at you. The fact it's clearly tailored more towards structure take down than combat feels like exactly the right balance in theory!
That's not an axe, it's a hatchet. Axes require two hands.
Also the strike zone seems a bit on the small side. It seems great for cutting kindling but I wouldn't want to use it to chip away at an alien RT. That requires something heavier, or something which can stab.

Here is my idea for the axe blade, slightly larger and heavier looking. <img src="http://i50.tinypic.com/255p3d2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
<!--quoteo(post=1757463:date=Mar 5 2010, 07:58 PM:name=Cruor)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Cruor @ Mar 5 2010, 07:58 PM) <a href="index.php?act=findpost&pid=1757463"><{POST_SNAPBACK}></a></div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec--><img src="http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/9692/ns2axecurvedmockup.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" /><!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> If it's really going to be an axe, I think Cruor's idea looks much better. But I guess I would prefer a knife. The pistol looks cool though. And btw, will we have the option to turn on/off the laser sight? Or it's there just to make the gun looks cooler?
Pistol I like it in general. The bulky powerfull feel is allright. But the angle of the grip compared to the TSA logo cover part feels like it isnt quite ergonomic. It should flat out more horizontally so your "dead flesh" on the topside of your thumb and indexfinger can rest with space to spare without being pushed into that bulky TSA cover.
Also the angle between grip - muzzle seems off. Looks like you would tilt a "normal" gun into the floor with this setup and wrist position. Theese 2 problems are probably linked and a refit of the angle of things will remove both problems =)
Axe The axeblade doesn't look like it will chop much alien goo in a swing. I would like a broader blade so you really could do some damage to a structure instead of the current size that is something similar to a knife stab in size it seems. Alltho to preserve the model of a foldabe swizz army axe I understand that the bladesize will be limited. But it feels kinda out of place as to its function atm.

I imagine from the pistol concept that the laser sight is removable. I'm guessing we'll probably be able to buy upgrades for each gun or different parts (like choosing a flashlight attachment instead of a laser sight).
First, fantastic job with the pistol and the 2sec. These designs are unique and impressive (I've never seen a Gerber switch-axe before and I'm doubting 90% of those who play will have either) in the intricacy and thought put into them. Of course the melee weapon could have been a bit more high tech with some sort of plasma-heated edge, but I think I understand what UW is going for here. These space marines are off exploring alien locations far removed from a constant flow of new, shiny supplies. They may be more courageous and skilled than the average grunt, but they can't afford to be wasting time on constantly replacing batteries on/recharging high-tech gear. Also, high tech stuff has a greater likelihood of not working. No marine would risk using a plasma torch that may not light when being charged by an alien!
Second, guys, they're showing what's going to be in-game. I think we're long past the "give feedback on the design" stage.
The reload mechanism makes absolutely no sense whatsoever....People are using machine guns for decades now...and they don't need those ridicolous levers.
The hatchet is bogus, too...the story behind is even scarrier.
What is it good for? What are its applications?
I really liked the chainsaw suggestion for destroying structures. And I liked the lightsaber idea...both much more reasonable than tying to destroy something or kill someone with that hatchet.
Trying to use a knife in melee is crazy anyway from a realistic point of view. Khaaras wouldn't be stopped my something like that...I guess pepper-spray with nanobots would be a better idea..
Hatchet is so useless....It would be a better idea to just try and rip the resource tower away from the steam hole...
For melee combat: Adamantium claws <img src="http://ideafix7.files.wordpress.com/2009/03/nate_wolverine_2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />
They have been proven to be great against all kinds of foes.

So you want to replace the axe with either a lightsaber or wolverine claws? Solid idea, broski.
How can you not see the benefit to having an axe/hatchet over a knife, especially when trying to destroy resource towers? Do you know how an axe works? For reference, see this video:
Replace the girl with a TSA marine, the tree with a resource tower, the friendly laughter with gunfire, and the cheering with the sound of marines dying around you. Now you may be able to see why an axe is a more practical weapon rather than metal claws or just trying to rip the resource tower off.
Really like the idea with the hatchet, though as Frontiersman that thing isn't pretty good to cut throw cables on a blocked door or something. It's really just to kill Aliens, right?
My opinion.. but first of all, thank you very much for uploading abundant graphic material in this new update, really love it!
I like the overall design of the pistol, but I do not like the mechanism type "luger"... maybe some more compact would be better and not something like a steam rod.
About the ax, definitely I do not like it at all. I prefer a simple knife, a Rambo Knife style or a folding knife.
I would really like to say that I like in both models (gun and knife) the exquisite level of detail in the textures.

The pistols are cool, number 8 is real nice :)
Are you serious ? an axe ? crap.
And 2 sec-switch, skillful skulk would kill marine before he thought of getting his 'AXE' out...
p.s. liked the pistol, but definitely not the axe.

Anyway, who the hell wrote Altera on the blade. I'm going to stick DE2 to someone's rectum, I've had enough of Altera in uni!
