Is this for the effects such as steam billowing from a pipe? Cause I generally get a big fps decrease from them currently.

Woops, should've put this in the progress thread.

No, the optimization of atmospheric FX refers to the atmospheric lighting. The particle effects are different, but those are slated for getting a big optimization pass next, as well.

hmm, running a competition for bots... not sure if like. That means that prolly alot of ppl waste alot of time.
  • TheLordTheLord Join Date: 2003-05-13 Member: 16258Members
I do not like that idea, who needs bots in a game like ns/ns2? In ns1 they are usually just there to make players join empty server because they think someone is playing on them.

If you want to run a competition how about an official mapping competition? With showcases of the progress made every week as a big news or something.... First you should update the map editor though...

Thats how competitions work where only one guy/group can win in the end...

I like it, bots are very usefull - especially for a lot kind of mods that could be done.

Bots are very useful, essential even for debugging\testing certain code, but as a legitimate alternative to players when it comes to actual gameplay? That's a very tough one, especially for NS with it's rather complex game-mechanics. I have to be honest, I dread seeing a repeat of what has happened with NS1, TFC and many mods alike, where more than half the server-list is 'contaminated' with these bot-infested servers.

Whats about the bot programmer of ns1?

whichbot has a nice object model & would be a good place to get ideas for attempting this.

There are several reasons why bots are useful, one of which is for people who are first trying out NS2 and want to learn and practice the game, before jumping into a full server with people who yell at them for not knowing what they are doing.

If bots make it in it would be nice with a "no bots" filter.
  • konatakonata Join Date: 2011-08-24 Member: 118296Members
The game shouldn't require bots so you can learn it before jumping in to a server. If there was a single-player story with good bots then that would be different, although a multiplayer game shouldn't be so complex you need to use bots for basic understanding; maybe for mastering/self-practice at commander button mashing but not for initial learning. That implies you haven't learned from the complexity in NS1 that put new players off.

Considering the modern accessibiltiy standards I think it's pretty understandable if a RTS/FPS can't be fit under the expectations. I'm not sure whether the bots are the solution, but I'm more than willing to go there if it somehow allows the game 'to expect more' - even if only the slightest bit - from your average newcomer.

The way I see it, NS2 could be a lot more intuitive with things like the HUD improvement right now though. The last time I tried the game, it was confusing even for a player that knows NS1 by heart and has very little trouble jumping into games in general.
  • playerplayer Join Date: 2010-09-12 Member: 73982Members
I'm pretty sure there were nubcake-servers in NS1, so I'm not expecting anything different for NS2.
