I agree that the comment section of that code is aimed at 42 man servers. However, Wooza claims this change had a positive effect on more than just 24+ servers. If that's the case, then that kind of change is for the good of NS2 rather than the good of 24+ servers.
Anyway, I am not here to argue semantics and I will agree that you posted evidence that the Developers have done good things for big servers. I'm here to defend the future of NS2's modding communities because I respect content creators and developers alike.
If you can't follow your own goal posts you shouldn't be participating in the discussion.
I wrote instead of "some", "one" which ended in complete wrong sentence, sorry... I want to higlight tho that you mention "specific issues and optimatizations" which means there must more than this surely.
from 500 to 300 , well done UWE , 40% of the population is gone .
Funny, because the trend shows that NS2 went from 600 to 430 players between 11th and 12th. Did we lose 30% of the playerbase there too? From the 11th the peak has dropped a slight bit until the 14th of which it spiked again a tiny bit, and then sharply down to 0. Which I assume was patch related. How interesting, it is as if the players could spot the future. I dont even know what the complaints are about, the trend is way too early to make any conclusions off.
Same happened in march with a "sharp" decline in peakplayers. Sometimes people got other shit to do.
Let's say the average peak now consistently drops about 100 players then yeah, I would agree.
Hey guys, I just wanted to update you all- we had our biweekly meeting today and did discuss this. Here's what it's looking like:
The change to the default server browser filters will not be reverted. We are, however, going to be continuing to make improvements to it not only to improve functionality but also QoL improvements in our weekly updates as we work toward the ultimate endgoal of a total browser revision. Things like having it remember your filters on startup (which is already being tested), and perhaps showing favorites regardless of filter come to mind.
We appreciate the amount of passion around this change but we do believe it is for the greater good of the game at this time. I want to thank everyone that provided constructive feedback and suggestions regarding the server browser, and I encourage that kind of feedback to continue as it helps us greatly in our effort to revise it.
We're going to go ahead and sink this thread. We've heard the feedback, we've discussed it and we've come to a decision about it. If you have further feedback on the server browser please feel free to start a new thread.
Wow Rantology, that's a horrible decision. Looking at the filters, they basically filter out empty servers, except for one. The biggest one AND most popular one. Really really disappointing. Look at the steam charts (since my post with the link got deleted by Ironhorse for no real reason - fighting the small community, yay! Luckily someone reposted them, and their post isn't deleted).
It's a small community. You're killing it slowly. First with ns2+ now with this. When will you stop?
I wish I could now retract the $75 dollars I once donated to this game.
Edit: Btw I enjoy the sweet sweet irony of how this game started as a mod, and now it wants nothing to do with mods! I like...
if people want their first experience to be on Wooza's UWE has no right to stop them.
Wrong, they have every right, and every means to ensure their customers get to experience the work that so many people put so much time and money into over many years.
If anyone had the right to decide what occurs in this product, it is them, as it's their product and not yours, whether you like it or not.
I don't get this entitlement mentality, or this hyper victimization.
Spoken like the enforcer of a dictatorship.
Customers bought NS2, but many of them have voted with their feet and run away from the broken product that was (mis)sold to them. A large number of those who remained decided to play on a 42 player server instead of various 12 player servers. UWE then took action to change the reality to fit their warped interpretation that the game is dying because of the large server, when in fact it is only breathing at all thanks in part to that large server.
Let me specify here that I have never played a single round on Wooza's server, and in fact I'm not sure I have ever even connected to the server. I personally don't like the idea of games with more than 8 players per side. But, to the very last day of the internet, I will defend the rights of others to have choice, and to play as they want.
Though "it is their product," remember that we are all paying customers and also have rights. You speak as if NS2 was a charity project from UWE to us, or some kind of F2P game, when in fact, it was a charity project from NS1 fans to UWE. Boy am I glad I didn't pay for the alpha or beta access back then. I never regretted having paid full retail price in November 2012, but seeing this underhanded intrigue now, I wish I had waited for a Steam sale to pay the $4 this game deserves.
If "it is their game and they can do whatever they want" then please, by all means, go ahead and enforce a 12 player limit on servers. Just do it, instead of engaging in childish theatrics and threats. And then see what happens.
Your post reeks of high-handed ivory tower nonsense from an out of touch "elite", who actually happen to inhabit a pretty decrepit tower made of sand.

Strange evening,
As a long term modder (and recent mapper) and after going throw all posts of all the pages I would like to provide a fresh point of view to this thread. Please take your time, in respect for both part of the conflict:
In order to keep focus, neutral and prevent you to waste previous time on an already long and quickly growing thread, I will stick to those two points.
The main points seen so far in this discussion:
Should 24+ servers be part of the game, regarding of what they have become.
Do hinding non-legacy servers from the "all" filter helps retaining players.
Guys, we will never ever make any changes to this game solely to ruin a community. [...] Every single change we have made to the game since November has been with the express purpose of improving the new player experience. That's it. We're not shutting down Woozas, or any other server.
"Improving the new player experience"... On the paper it is a noble objective but unfortunatly on the field, proof is (players last 24h statistics, both rookies and salty vets have shown on this thread) that this update is blowing smoke. It is of course too soon to take a side and UWE may be right with the way they are heading the boat toward, they are no fire without smoke and it is a really dangerous gamble you got there. If ever you feels like sticking to it remember that if the NS2Large community is right, and if the rollback takes too long to apply there might be no going back.
So back to our subject, should be 24+ part of the game ? yes of course but controlled in a way that is conveniant for everyone. Hidding it (even behind a single button) is definitively a point with several sides and the idea comming the most to the surface is the time: A good idea but if applied without care, or due respect for peoples who have been running the wheel, hardworking contributors with the sweat of their brows will lead to a wall. Server browsing developpement feels like an other way to achieve the goal in the right time and can lead to a better use of NS2 default filters, and UI.
At last but not least, the NS2Large community has shown points deserving to be honored. I am thinking of @Alucard on large servers showing and teaching leading the team to a game we could remember, while guiding rookies all allong as well on the way to doing things right. One can get along threads on the forum and find examples on what large games gave to NS2. Forgetting the facts that performance is an issue for computers who have seen more than your old ma'am there and sticking to gameplay: Is "hiding" these a good idea ? When trying to get too much milk, we often end up getting blood.
Finally, I am speaking to conclude as the Faded/Defense modder about player retention on mods. Especially after both Faded and last stand spotlights. UWE, if you are here consider reading this part of my post.
Seeding a server is a well known hard task to achive, seeding a modded server can be compared as trying to revive a dying friend : you get lucky if a heart bip makes is way out, but most of the time it does not last and goes out by the time a few round have been played. Also, this is unfortunalty only if this new joiner is lucky enough not to find marines standing brainless in the readyroom. You end up alone and even hours of waiting does not help. History has shown that like every good thing out there, players are getting players, and beyond vets last stand and Faded won't have lasted long if placed behind 'even a thin' filter veil. Those servers are slowly dying, staying hidden deducts the chances a player will be explicitly clicking on the filter, and searching for it. Flooded with the 0/24 servers starving for players they do not stand a chance. but,
community events, on servers visible from the main server browser list are making a difference: That is the whole point of "seeding".
The voice of someone who placed (tenth of) thousands hours of contribution on this game.
The only reason the server got active is because of something I already stated earlier. People spammed everyone on steam friends to make them aware that the server was still up, cause nobody goddamn knew.
So joining an empty server and sending invites to friends... I believe that's called seeding, something we have to do regularly on normal sized servers.
How come Wooza or any of his admins (assuming he has any) aren't seeding the server then? Zero (IBIS) leaves himself AFK in his server 24/7 to always seed it when it empties out. Why can't Wooza do the same? That would make it appear in the NS2large list, toss in some invites and you have a full server.
We're going to go ahead and sink this thread. We've heard the feedback, we've discussed it and we've come to a decision about it. If you have further feedback on the server browser please feel free to start a new thread.
I just want to point out the irony of sinking a thread about servers being hidden from the server browser. Much like players looking to join large servers I too thought this thread was dead. But hey, working as intended right?

You was right btw that the server NEEDS rookies to work.
And this fact is the source of all the drama.
They cant vacuum all the rookies anymore.
But it looks like they working on rookie "portal servers" now.
Kinda interisting to hang around on wooza discord btw.

The sustainability of a modded server when it is not given a proper audience and spotlight
Before anything, I'd like to point out that nobody is seeding Wooza's server because he (temporarily?) shut it down. Hoever, even so, our point still stands: the modders of NS2 are loved by the community. Removing them from the default server-browser is akin to calling them "second-rate" servers. UWE is treading an awkward path, a path they have had the misfortune of seeing before. I find it remarkably unwise to treat a large portion of the player-base as "second-rate", thereby treading that same path once again. I can't stress this enough.
Look how mad everyone is... Some are mad enough to " sling poop" as I kindly put it. It may be a sign of rage, but it stems from a special kind of betrayal. The feeling you get when your favorite thing (NS2 Modding) gets toyed with. Wooza had nothing to do with this. We read the patch notes and immediately retaliated. Hell, I haven't helped Woozas in my life.
Unfortunately, the staff at UWE have already heard our plight and will likely ignore the rest. However, if this situation does not change for the better, I can't guarantee that I will continue to support UWE by completing my skin collection, purchasing Subnautica and urging my friends to play NS2. Realistically, why would I support someone who considers me a "second-rate" player? I'm not saying it's a conspiracy, I'm saying it's an extremely poor implementation that needs to be reverted or heavily revisited. I gave some suggestions directly to @rantology that would achieve UWE's stated goals as well as give the modders their spotlight. There are also other good suggestions within this thread. A win-win, if you will.
While I'm at it, @depara why do you always pick on the low-hanging fruit? Why don't you address one of the many well-constructed arguments instead of "slinging poop" all over? You serve to do nothing other than undermine our points by getting under our skin. Your stance has been repeated over and over, at this point you are parroting it to whoever will lend you an ear.

This thread has been sunk already, but I won't hesitate to lock it if it continues to be nasty. I'm just catching up with it after a busy week and there was a ton of naming & shaming and personal attacks. They need to stop here. If your post has personal attacks from here on out, it will be edited or potentially just deleted entirely, regardless of the other content. If you cannot communicate without generally being rude and personally attacking people, either wait to post or don't post at all.
If you guys have PRIVATE issues with someone, the way they run their servers, things they've said to you, etc. you need to address it over PRIVATE messages. Not blasting it all over the forums.

also some people i am sure will buy the game and discover there are only small servers and then never play it. Whlst some mght be driven away by large servers others may very well be driven away by small ones.
Also i will no longer be mapping for this game and i will no longer be working on my large hydra update and my small version of ns2 dark because i no longer believe in UWE's vision for this game and i feel as though it would be a waste of my own time. I give the game a few months before its to empty for me to even bother logging in anymore.

Disgusting. There were so many other ways to fix your problem (many listed in this thread), yet you guys chose the lazy solution. I've lost most of the hope I gained when I heard that UWE was officially supporting ns2 again, and I'm 100% sure I'm not the only one.
Also sinking the thread? Really? Afraid your bad decisions will be met with too much criticism?
Like Biscsum said, its not my server.
In fact its a new one.
The original server had its time, this time is over. Point.
I dont really care about your community or your server.
But i care about the game.
So while a player with enough hrs in the game knows the difference between all mods, new players who have still problems to understand the vanilla game dont know them.
And cause the nature of the slotammount new players will end on your server sooner or later cause this servers has the highest chance of a free slot.
Did the new player have the free will to join? Sure, but sometimes (timedependent) there is no really alternative.
Im sure this is the reason for the last change.
Personally i bielieve this server is the source of countless technical issues people posted in the steam forum and here.
And no, before we see the typical "its running super smooth, i have 140 fps there" start again:
By playing there you lose 30% fps and more (depent on situation) and you have other problems based on the reduced rates.
And again, you as vets are aware of this, cause you know and dont care about the issues.
I'm still getting 100+ FPS most of the time on wooza, which is more than enough for the type of gameplay I'm looking for when I join a wooza server.
And the argument that people who bought the game and cant find large servers would quit cause that are pure speculation based on warm air.
I would not call 24 slots small.
Team Fortress 2 (I heard its kinda successfull) has 32 slot max btw.
You play CS:Go 5v5 and have to search higher slot unranked servers via steam serverbrowser. And its still very popular, crazy isnt it?
Increase rookie level to 5 so new players can keep playing and practicing on rookie-only servers for longer before joining the non-rookie servers. You can still play on any server you want after reaching level 1 or finishing the tutorial.
If you want rookies to have an accurate representation of the game, "You can still play on any server you want after reaching level 1 or finishing the tutorial." you need to adjust this value which in my opinion is a better way of handling things. Perhaps that way rookies will have an even better understanding of how NS2 was originally intended and by then it is solely up to them and them only on which server they chose to play on, UWE, PDT or Wooza community no longer has a say.
Is this something that we could do with current playercounts? How many do we REALLY need to make it happen?"
So upon suddenly realising this, is there a real need to switch to displaying NS2 vanilla by default?
On a side note, this is from a fellow rookie that actually WANTS to go back to being a rookie.
To further iterate a point and before someones says we shouldn't gate rookies, this is happening already in other games, i.e. Dirty Bomb from the top of my head, I could not play any other "game modes" until I had reached a certain level, I was thankful for this and considering we see ns2Large as a gamemode in itself, I don't see how this is a problem.
@Yojimbo : We surely lost something ... but I 'm a pratical guy so ... where is it ? I just had it ! It was just HERE !
- Where is it ?
- I don't know
- I's gone
- That's true
- It's lost
- I know
- Where could it be ?
- Could be anywhere
- Maybe it'll come back
- Maybe but not yet

You serve to do nothing other than undermine our points by getting under our skin. Your stance has been repeated over and over, at this point you are parroting it to whoever will lend you an ear.
EDIT: Refer to my other post for a solution that helps Rookies find small servers BY DEFAULT, while retaining the integrity of our content creators. Simple: Keep them in the same list. More information here --> http://forums.unknownworlds.com/discussion/comment/2280840/#Comment_2280840
If you guys have PRIVATE issues with someone, the way they run their servers, things they've said to you, etc. you need to address it over PRIVATE messages. Not blasting it all over the forums.
Thanks guys
@Decoy pls
Just for the record, it is my server now. Depara unfortunately refused to be involved in it.
also some people i am sure will buy the game and discover there are only small servers and then never play it.
I feel we are missing a major point here.
This is from PATCH 286.

- Where is it ?
- I don't know
- I's gone
- That's true
- It's lost
- I know
- Where could it be ?
- Could be anywhere
- Maybe it'll come back
- Maybe but not yet
