Donation For In-game Status Poll

Various ranking people have an icon next to their name in NS. Playtesters have an orange skulk icon, developers have a blue TSA logo, NS Guides have the yellow heavy marine and server ops have a green server icon on their own server (see the screenshot below).

Would you donate around $20-30 (probably via Paypal), if it meant you got a special "NS supporter" icon next to your name? This donation would go towards ongoing development of NS and towards expenses in running this web site. Mostly though, it would go to paying my own bills to allow NS development to continue in a major (as opposed to a part-time) fashion.

You Suck Flayra. All this time I was hoping to <b>eat</b> with my next paycheck. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='tounge.gif'><!--endemo-->

After actually looking at the answers besides "Yes", I'm shocked anybody would think this is selling out. You don't want to contribute, fine.. don't. I plan on using the little icon to A) confuse Noobs into thinking I'm part of the NS team <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> and B) quickly identifying people who are dedicated to NS and therefore hopefully have some clue what they're doing. Then proceeding to team up with those people and wreak horrible destruction on our enemies.

*Waves a fist-full of bills screaming "<i>TAKE MY MONEY AWAY!!</i>"*

<--- is also confused as to why when "fist full" is spelled as one word, it comes out as "fiSUYFll"

I may donate, but I'd like to have forums that WORK first...

the Desert Crisis Mod does a smiliar thing in granting special "easter egg heads" (the mod has configurable facial/head features) for people who make a donation. I think Sven Coop gives you something as well. Giving boons for supporting a mod is always a good thing, as long as it only gives the donator "cool" points and not special stuff no one else has. Go for it.

First of all, I, personally, wouldn't donate, but I don't paticularly care if donaters get special 'staus symbols'.
As long as the 'symbols' do NOT convey ANY sort of 'in-game' bonus, I will be okay with it.

Secondly, how do you plan to implement this?

    Thirdly, far better than a one-time $20-30, is a one-month donater badge for $10.
    This is because
    A) $10 seems like less than half $20 (For some reason), so you'd get more donaters,
    B) Anyone who donates just for the badge doesn't get a continual 'free lunch',
    C) You get far, far more money in the long run with small, continuous payments than larger, one time payments,
    D) It would be a (more) continuous and (more) reliable form of income, depending less on new-player turnover.

    I would happily donate.

NS at $20 is a bargin!
  • BastardBastard Join Date: 2002-11-14 Member: 8561Members
I'm curious how this would be implemented? Would this be a one-time donation after which a patch would be released with the names? Or would simply be a list downloaded by the servers from time to time?

    Just curious...

Id prolly donate, tho for $50+ you should offer to put thier own custom icon into the next update(sorta like a avatar), i can see the ns\gfx\vgui folder reaching 600+ icons any day now.

Now.... if you make the alien buildings (offensechamber, defense, movement, sensory, resourcetower, hive) have the euser1 point to who built it... ill donate for SURE since i get to dump my crappy method to detect who owns what. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

Not like it would change gameplay at all.

Might as well go for it, it really isn't "selling out" because your not required that anyone buys one, and your not selling to a company who will say do this and do that. And if no one buys them, it's no loss really.

What would be even better, is that there were around 10 different icons, and if you bought one, your icon increased "level" do to the amount of time playing NS or kills or something like that.
  • InexorableInexorable Join Date: 2002-09-28 Member: 1360Members
Tieom, why would he bother with "more" income? There are something like 10,000 people registered to this forum alone, and many more who've downloaded the game. If each one were to donate $20, Flayra could easily pocket a quarter-mil.

    .........

I don't suppose I can still get in on this "developer" scam can I Flayra?

yea, well you could still donate 20-30, but if you donate more than 50 you get your own custom icon. Just an idea.

If you want an idea on how it would work, check the Sven Coop donation system. I imagine Flayra would use something similar.

    <a href='http://www.svencoop.com/support.php' target='_blank'>http://www.svencoop.com/support.php</a>

Donations have worked very well for us although we decided to keep the cost to people as low as possible ($6 gets you everything). People did have a lot of worries about it when we first announced the idea but we haven't had any problems so far.

Mostly the money has been used on our vBulletin board, so the community do get something out of it.

Yes I would probably donate, not for the icon (althought it would be cool). I would donate to keep NS rolling. BTW what is a guide?
  • CForresterCForrester P0rk(h0p Join Date: 2002-10-05 Member: 1439Members, Constellation
If we could donate by means other than PayPal (E.g. cheque in the mail, wire transfer), I'd GLADLY save up money to donate! You deserve it!
  • ShuflYShuflY Join Date: 2002-11-15 Member: 8760Members
I would have probably donated even without getting some kind of in game icon, in fact, would there be any way to donate and NOT get an icon? This may sound lame, but I'd want to donate purely to support further development of the game, I'm not really interested in getting a special icon.

NS is great, best game I played in 2002, and so far the only PC game I've played in 2003. You definatly deserve some dough for your work...

If I had money, I'd give it to you.

But yes, I would donate after I get a job of my own.
  • AlignAlign Remain Calm Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 5216Forum Moderators, Constellation
I'll donate as soon as I get a credit card/other means of paying(ie growing up to 'have-a-job' age.)...
You could make it so that if you donate a large sum(50$? 75$?), you can get a custom icon hand made by one of the devs just for you! Shouldn't take much time to make such an icon either.

I think I would... I like the idea of a "progress" icon, however. Basically, you pay to get a progress meter type thing kept track of, so not only do you get a special icon, but people can tell your total NS experience, and stuff... like an on-going reward or something. I don't even know what you'd keep track of... total time spent playing? Maybe total kills? (yeah, yeah, that one goes against Marine philosophy)...

Ooh! Games won! That would be a very cool, simple stat to keep track of! I would personally like that alot - you pay $20 and you get an icon that somehow shows the number of games you have been on the winning team for. Basically just keep track of how much time you've been on that team, and if its >90% of the total round time (to protect from retrying), and your team <i>wins</i>, you get your "Wins Statistic" increased, for all to see! Now that I think about it, you might have to make it have a minimum player count, too, for when the match ends. Like only games with 12 or more players get a score increase. AHH, whatever - just an idea that I thought would encourage people to buy more <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/wink.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='wink.gif'><!--endemo-->

I would donate to help support the game, but I'll keep my "server admin" icon thanks <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='smile.gif'><!--endemo--> Maybe a special icon next to the forum name would be a good idea though. And I definately would not do it via Paypal...ANYTHING but Paypal!

I also think that any server operators that donate should get access to beta releases. I wanna play with the latest fixes! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->

I bought a NS t-shirt just on the off-chance some bit of my money would go to the dev team. I spend way too much time playing games and this one is at the top of my list.

Send $20-$30 to keep it going? Where do I sign?
