I did not know that. Thanks for the pointer. I don't care much about the icon, though hey... it's kind of cool I guess.

Great idea. I'd hope NS sees a REAL retail launch into glorious glory. So I'd actively put my money where my praise is for this.

I went out and bought SimCity 4. Cost me about 50€ or so. Thats twice the amount of money NS would cost me. Yet I play NS more than SimCity 4. And they put millions of corporate dollars in that. Question: would 20$ be acceptable? I'd do it.

However....

What would happen if the WONservers crash again? And our WONids change... would that mean I'd lose my NS support tag-o-brag?

Heck fire! I'd gladly donate. I've already bought clothing, but there's really only so many skulk t-shirts a guy can have. =) I'm all for getting a different perk.

Suggestion:
- put a time limit on it, or a version limit, or something... [it would keep the list from growing ad-infinitum, and people would understand that their icon will eventually disappear]

But, yeah, if I can get paypal to work, I'd donate.

I think a lot of people, particularly ones who don't have work experience yet, or haven't worked on a project that favors passion over profit, won't understand where the money is going. They might assume that all game developers are rich bigwigs who just get richer and richer and that donating money is kind of like tipping.

I suspect the reality is that, unless Valve is investing some of their money towards the project in anticipation of its future success, that there is very little direct funding and most of the team is working mostly out of passion, and is keeping a "normal" job at bay however they are able. Since the "real world" is always groping towards artists and dreamers with its bony hands, over time it will keep getting more difficult to keep people involved as they start getting hungry.

If I'm right so far, I recognize the necessity of soliciting donations, and even admire a method as subtle as recognizing contributers. It might help encourage others to give if some game theory were applied to representing where it went. Perhaps a little building on the website with a building status bar around it just like in the game, understood to be "money for hiring that specialist for eight hours to fix that such-and-such bug." Kind of like a Jerry Lewis telethon, only not so gushy.

Hm, I'd pay.

BTW, to you guys flamin' uranium on the first page - the forums *were* going up and down like a french actress for ages there...I had heaps of problems getting on at random times for several weeks up until the new look was finished.

All seems to be great now though.

I have the cash, I have the cheques and I have the credit card. What I dont have is a PayPal account.

It quite clearly states on the PayPal page that only people in the US are protected by the US money transfer laws, and quite frankly I am an not keen on trusting a company with my money if there are no international laws in place to protect me, especially if it is a credit card number we are dealing with where they can continually dip into my funds whenever they feel the need for lunch.

Any other option, even a postal address, would be greatly appreciated.

Actually, the one receiving the money is more at risk than the person giving the money. At least, in a seller/buyer situation, that is the case.

Figure out an easy pay system that lets me securely pay you and get a leet little icon that stays with me and the money is all yours. Just make it simple and safe !

Flayra, I will donate

remiCs said something about a LAN this weekend or next or something?

But can't I just give you 20 bucks instead of losing money by doing it over Paypal

Edit: As for patches to the server side software, I imagine he would only do this for a limitied time, always acccept donations, but only do it while including an icon for the time being til 1.1 is released, I've got the moeny right now, if I knew where exactly he'd live I'd grab the MBTA over there and put it in his hands just to shake it since I did'nt go the release party that was held here

I've been playing and enjoying NS severals hours a day the last 3 months... I Guess this lovely game deserves my money,
• Teufel_EldritchTeufel_Eldritch Join Date: 2002-01-28 Member: 124Members
Seems like even more reason for ppl to brag about thier leetness to me. Yea giving the devs money is cool but we all know what is really gonna happen here. Ppl are gonna send money in, get the icon, then go around acting if they are king sh*t just because they have the icon next to thier name. Then again server ops can disable the icons so I guess it works out in the end......kinda
• DieHardDieHard Join Date: 2002-11-11 Member: 8173Members, Constellation
eh there,

How about skipping the icon and just have a page on the NS site dedicated to the ppl who donated 20 bucks (or more)? I know I support games I like, the rest of the world doesn't need to know if I did or not. It would be nice to know how many players have helped to fund the team.

I'd donate, but I won't touch Paypal with a 10-foot stick.

Gimme something that I haven't heard a thousand horror stories about, and you have my money.

I would like to be able to have personal icons. Say ones that reference clans, but I guess this has to be implemented into NS and not client side. Still, I would and will do it. Just cause I enjoy NS. I suck anyway, so having an icon wouldn't represent my skills.

Amazon's honor thingy system could work as an alternative? They still take a commission for their work, I think, but they aren't named "PayPal" at least.

A letter from switzerland to USA is quite cheap. Atleast I can send a letter from Finland to Canada for under 2 euros. Unless Switzerland has some crazy postal service. But letters don't always make it to their destination.

As long as the dev team promises to spend the money on NS and not hookers and dope.... but then agian i think they well deserve a good prosititute/dope session for all thier hard work

Ok, this probably wont make much of a difference and Flayra will make up his own mind on payment, but I suggest http://brightpay.com/, because I have heard too many complaints about paypal and BrightPay seem very secure and has great customer support.
