Command center model

It's coming
As a quick note to everyone working on maps for NS, I wanted to mention this to you: we're working on a model for the command center. This means the command center will no longer be a brush entity, but will be point entity instead.

This is being done for a few reasons:

- People get lost looking for the command center. A standard model will help people find it (especially given how important it is for both sides)

- We're probably allowing new command centers to be built by the marine team. This allows the marines to build up in a part of the map other then the marine spawn.

Sorry if this negates some of the work you guys have done, but these things happen (just ask Merks or Relic sometime). I'm not sure how, if or when we'll get this update to the NSTR2, but we'll do our best. Thanks.

What does it look like? Is it a full console with body/casing and everything? Or just a screen or something to put onto existing architecture?

Ah, well... at least it'll free up some polys in that room! I hate it when I have to make these kinds of changes to my level, but -hey- it's part of the process, and things always turn out for the better in the end.

Can you let us know the dimensions of the CC model when they are available please.

    No, you must guess...

Hmmmmm....in that case, I better leave the whole grid open for the command console just in case you guys decide on a model that's 8192x8192 or so...ack, that doesn't leave much room for the rest of the map!

Being able to make more than one command center is interesting, that's a strategy I know is used in a lot of RTS'es. Plus it'll probably keep the aliens from knowing exactly where to go to find the marine base every single time.

/me guesses and clears a ~1000x1000 unit area in his MarineSpawn.

Hey, I can always resize if that's not enough room...

Well, I suppose it's a good thing that I didn't decide on starting with the marine side of my map. I'm definitely in favor of a standard CC, as I had no idea what to do with mine.

Ahh... what a relief! Ive had some problems making my command console look good.
Now I wont have to worry about that anymore!

First of all, very nice idea all around! I had been talking over the idea of having a portable CC, and I'm very happy to see you guys are one step ahead!

It wont hurt me too badly. (Boy am I glad that I never got around to remodelling my CC as planned! ) I had some planned in-map CC defenses, basically to prevent level 1 rush tactics. I may still implement them and leave it up to the players to make use of them.

As others have eluded to.. it would be nice to know the ballpark we're looking at for the size of the model.

Other than that, I think it sounds great!

It looks like a small box with a big red button saying 'PUSH ME' under it.

As for marines building a new command console...woop! I wonder if there should be a way to transport buildings around too, say using phase gate technology?
  • ChromeAngelChromeAngel Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 14Members, NS1 Playtester, Contributor
    So it's a small, 1000 x 1000, box with a red button under it?

Sounds like the dev guys are geussing too...

    * imagines a marine with a 'weapons factory' strapped to his back asking his commander 'where do you want this?' *

ChromeAngel, I don't think the phrases "small" and "1000x1000" should be used in the same sentence that way

:edit: I figure I probably should've asked this sooner, but if the marines build multiple command consoles, does that mean that more than one person could be commander? Or is it just a backup in case the first one gets blown up? Multiple commanders sounds inherently messy to me..../me imagines a marine team where every marine is a commander.

cool, now all we need is a standard dropship model, and we'll be set

yeah! but we can use cliffs dropship to be official. It gives the NS maps more of a link together, not all different universes...

make a couple of skins and damnageskins and shapes. nice!

but what happens to the shadows?!

I thought Cliff's ship was a cargo vessel?

Anyhow, I for one -am- concerned about the model-based Command Center... mainly worried that it won't fit into my map, texture-wise.

To be frank, I think that a model will be a hundred times better than aything done in brushwork. Especialyl when the model is made by this team!
  • liquidscriptliquidscript Join Date: 2002-01-24 Member: 35Members, Constellation
I'm sure it'll have a portable look. Something with a simlar style to a laptop, but larger. Perhaps it could be three crates and each opens up with electronics and keyboards in the bottom part of the crate and LCD or Holographic screens in the top part of the crate. I'll try modeling this, but I won't be able to transfer it from 3ds to milkshape, .

Yes! I really like that idea, liquid.

Heh... and I thought I was the only one worried about the model replacing my already-built CC...

I'm sure it will be wonderful though, regardless what it looks like.

Regarding the portable, holographic console idea - if it's a model, it can easily be animated, so it could unfold in some complex way when activated.

Even better, have it as two models - one for the basic structure, and another for the holographic screens etc floating in the air, with rendermode set to additive or whatever.

To the mapper, it would still be one entity - but it would give the modeller a lot more leeway for interesting designs.

I like the idea of a standard CC model, but the idea of multiple CCs and how they are built are bugging me. Can you only build another CC if you have a commander (ie, the original CC hasn't been destroyed yet) and once it's built, what's to stop some l4m3r (or two) from destroying the original CC, booting out the current commander, then rushing over to a new CC and taking over the team?

Is there any way to have animating textures in halflife models??

Sort of - you can have multiple skins for part of a model, and these can be switched as required.

Some of the aliens in Half-Life use this for blinking eyes, such as the hound-eyes, bullsquids and icthyosaurs.

Maybe some scrolling, flickery holographic screens would be nice...

then all commander consoles will look the same when the real cc model gets released ....

i sure hope that map makers will have the ability to make their own cc, it'd be a shame if in every game, the cc looked the same...hey, that rhymed---oh oh, i'm having such a time, this is surely most sublime! Err, sorry about that...anyway, while it's be nice if you guys made a great looking cc, i'm afraid that the homogeny would eventually get to me. Though the only reason i'm posting this is because i'm usnsure if all maps will have the same cc...if not, then i guess this is moot! Answers, you have them, i want them!
