Sorry to spoil you're party, but you aint the first to try this.
Back waaaay before NS was even released a small team of people (many whow you will haveheard of, some now on the NS team) tried this.
We e-mailed Flayra, we had the perfect way this could all work with lttle work from him, becuase he was so busy. he said no. He didn't want it done unless it contained 100% consistency with NS MP, and the only way that could be ensured was if he was to play a major role in the development of the SP version. So we decided against it.
By all means you can try, but once news get out and you are into your development, you can expect some interuption from the team I suspect.
What languages do you speak Asraniel? French, Italian, German? Is it dependend on where in Swiss you live, or are the languages scattered all over the country? (hmm this is quite off topic I guess) About the 'I don't understand you, speak English please.': I think every language has a right to exist. well i just figured out a clevar way to use the phase gates. Now in CS you have to be within a bomb area to place a bomb. @NERDIII, i live in the french part of switzerland (fribourg to be precise) but my mother language is swiss-german, well, its nearly the same as normal german (some people say no.. but well..) but i go in a french school.. makes 3 languages(well, if you want 4 with swiss-german, but for me it doesent count)

Ive got some experience in writing things for SP stuff like this, espec ns orientated. I had the same Idea as that you all had 1 year ago (Yes... Ive been away for a long time... and noone seems to remember me <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif'><!--endemo--> . And I was really active on the forums and IRC then....) before the game was lauched, posted it on the old forums... 2 people said that it sounded cool and wanted to work on it and the other mappers trashed it coz: "They where too busy mapping for the 1st release"...
So I wrote a storyline 1 year ago, made 3 maps and then stopped because noone wanted to work on it.
As for the SP game you have in mind: There are 2 basics from which you should choose one.. 1. the Story is about one single marine/person who is stranded in a certain area and reveals some government conspiracy thing or secret khaara alien thing bla... (ben there, done that) 2. the Story is about one single marine in a TSA regiment and every level is a mission he goes on with his team (only disadvantage with this one is that one person has to write bot scripts, nodes and a challenging AI).
What we should do Is host a poll on the general discussions board and ask what people would like in a NS SP game... because I think its the whole Idea that ALOT more peeps then only us should play it, else whats the use of making a SP game?
So, I hereby offer myself as PR mr thing, Level designer, and Mod story writer.
If you need another man on the team for any of the mentioned things please PM me, Id love to restart working on NS because Ive worked too much on NeverWinterNights modules and mods for various other games (freelancer, starlancer, dungeon siege etc etc).

As I played too many sp mods I suggest to make a team based game with some ai supporting you. The only mod I played so far that had npcs giving ypu backup (Barney doesn't count) was Wanted!. And even there it was a dumb AI and mostly one person, never an organized team.
you can only have 2 npc's going after you at one time, becuase of the node graph restrictions
(placing info_nodes builds a node grpah, though a max of ~120 nodes per map due to "yellow blobs" showing up)
though in op4 u had 3 able to chase you around - med, grunt, dude with welder
and its good to see some old posters, i my self am a masive fan of sp, out of the 250 half life mods on my computer, about 175 of them are single player - hate tys though

I'm sorry to add a reply but amckern,i've got a friend who wrote stories about ns (maybe you know him but all of the ns french cominty knows him),and his stories are incredible ! Maybe it could be a good story for the sp. I will traduce the first chapter of the first episode and you will see by yourself.
ahh where do these hovering scorpions come from? first Ollj with his maze map and the small icons in the minimap and now you two have them in the sig. Have I missed something? Perhaps I should do a google search. This really puzzles me.
the op4 code will not work, and the best i can get our code is with metamod pulgins, so we will have to work out how to work with metamod
the reson is change_level, and monster_enitys are in the mp.dll, and replaceing that will replace what we are looking for and that is comander view, and other things like that

You might consider trying to create a server-side plugin using metamod to add any new server entities that you need to create. There's several open source metamod plugins that you can look at the source code. You can get metamod from www.metamod.org
