I commanded on that game, I was trying to hack the elevator and wondering if i'd found anouther bug when it didn't move. When a marine peeped over the ledge I saw a builder and a couple of turrets. So then I got started on the buildings necissary for a grenade launcher. Momments later the elevator pops up with 3 turrets on it, fires like mad into my base and descends before any of our turrets or LMGs can kill any them. The next time it popped up it was 4 turrets. Then 4 turrets and 2 defense chambers (to regenerate the turrets). I place grenade launcher and try to get one of my headless chickens (marines) to pick it up and clear out the elevator. So what does he do now he's got this really expensive gun? Goes and stands on the very edge of the ledge where he can see the alien turrets (and they can shoot at him) and gets himself killed...

We were overrun about 5 minutes later.

Just talking about grenades then just made me think about hand grens. Are there any in NS because I haven't read a story yet that mentions them? If they aren't in why is that??

Searching the forums would reveal that there are no hand grenades because the grenade launcher does a better job. They might show up in V2, but it's not currently planned to my knowledge.

Turrets can shoot other buildings? I thought only sieges could do that.

i find hand grenades useless in NS because the only alien SLOW enough to actually be hit by it is the onos!

Yes, but only the siege turret can shoot through WALLS.

The siege turret also does a heckuva lot more damage and has a blast radius.

I look forward to the inculsion of hand gernades. Its all about forcing the enemy to move from cover.

My first post, been reading since mid-august. Don't release it till its finished.

Yeah it would be good to have hand grenades, because then average guy with a lmg could flush aliens out of ventilation shafts or just clear general rooms witout having to request a gren launcher. I mean it's always nice to throw a gren into a room before you enter it.
• CMEastCMEast Join Date: 2002-05-19 Member: 632Members
lol, I wouldnt suggest trying to flush aliens out if you only have a LMG, you dont know what could jump out at you.
I think throwing grenades into rooms would be a waste of time, grenades are easy to avoid, especially if you can move very quickly and can either wallclimb, fly or blink.

What about if you could prime grenades and wouldnt take up a slot, like in TFC?

Grenades have become more of a tool, to me. I use em to flush out people.

ah but if the enemy is FASTER than your grenades and they HAVE to (most of the time) get to melee range ANYWAYS doesn't that make hand grenades useless?
• outerfroggy1outerfroggy1 Join Date: 2002-10-01 Member: 1401Members
Not if you have a gorge hiding behind his turrets and u need to force him to an open area so u can give him some HMG lovin'

grenades arent usually used for killing, at least i use them more to flush ppl out from camping spots.
• CMEastCMEast Join Date: 2002-05-19 Member: 632Members
TFC grenades are good (although the radius is much to big, takes no skill to use). Most people seem to want grenades that involve picking a weapon and as flayra wants to use the same amount of keys as HL did so TFC style is probably out.

I agree... also it would be to unfair to the aliens if a marine can spam nades AND fire a weapon at the same time.

Ex.

Marine: Here comes a Fade. Oh no, I'm all alone. No worries, I have 4 nades. *Presses F 4x fast while firing HMG*

Fade: WTF! Spammer!

End Ex.

My point is that since most of the alien attacks are melee based, it would be unfair to them because they would (1) never get close to the mariens due to spammed nades and gunfire or (2) if they did get close, the marine could have had a nade primed and killed the alien kamikazi style.

good point..... Now could we please get some more stories?
• SeblySebly Join Date: 2002-08-14 Member: 1156Members
How about if you just give them one gren like some classes have in dod?
• D_6969D_6969 Join Date: 2002-09-07 Member: 1298Members
yeah and that or make the grenade unprimable, that way they couldn't just hold it for a second then toss it right before it goes off. And make it so that you'd have to do it like regular halflife where you have to select it and it becomes your weapon. That way they can be used they were meant to be used in real life. To flush out enemies or kill ones that are camping somewhere.
• MCThornGristleMCThornGristle Join Date: 2002-06-06 Member: 733Members
You can prime grenades in "real life", too, in case you weren't aware.
• D_6969D_6969 Join Date: 2002-09-07 Member: 1298Members
Yeah but there is a better chance of getting your hand blown off in real life and they don't beep if you weren't aware.

I thought you actually played SI? You'd know that grenades are only useless in the hands of those that don't know how to use them. Someone with enough practice can time them to blow in the faces of someone thats running fast. Not only that, they're useful for vents (if the volumetric explosion damage is implemented) and flushing places where a lot of aliens are hiding (maybe hives). The only reason I have against grenades is that there may be no need with grenade launcher.
