<div class="IPBDescription">After the smoke cleared</div>I am posting some of the great stories our playtesters have written us about NS games they've experienced. We hope this will get you in the mood for the soon-to-be released mod. (Note that there are a few liberties taken with editing, mostly for spelling or to remove confidential information).

It was probably at least a 7v7 battle. I would not hesitate to say that it was the most fun I've ever had in NS.

But you see... it wasn't just my best ns experience... it was one of -if not THE- best gaming experience I've ever had.

It was all about the level5.  That guy is freakin amazing. I was at a loss of words and stood there motionless after seeing one of those things charge down the glass tube at the beginning of hera. I was pressed up against the wall, and he ran right past me as if he didn't even care whether or not I lived. He must not have hit me, because I did, in fact, live... only to stand there and watch him tear up the marine base outside on the landing pad through the glass. I got goosebumps... it was just a tremendous feeling of awe.

I soon after died, and before I knew it there were what seemed like swarms of level5's 4's and 1's attacking the base at once. There were grenades blowing up everywhere, bullets flying, level 5's screaming, it was so frickin amazing.

( The welder currently fixes the command station when it has been destroyed)

I will have to say the best moment has been when about 5 marines were trying to get a lone welder (me) back to the MS in Bast to repair the CC, after our console had been destroyed by a Bob who had leaped past out turrets and taken it out. We were in the refinery, the furtherst point, of course, when Monse yells get the damn welder back here!

We were all loaded down with heavy weapons, and thus, inched our way back to the elevator below the airlock. A level 2 webbed the place to death and well all walked into the webs, slowing us down and making us lose control of our weapons. A level one attacked 5 hopping marines trying to get their weapons back.

We all quickly died. But we charged back out again and again, grabbing the welder each time (the weapons go away after 30 seconds, so we had to be quick, it was like getting a TFC flag before it returned) in time, and slowly getting it closer and closer back. I finally sprinted out of the airlock, past a horder of aliens and about 4 alien turrets. I grabbed the welder, and Monse jammed the airlock button as I madly yelled "hit the button hit the button!" I slipped back in the revolving door with a total of 3 health and some nasty aliens rushing up behind me. I thankfully got back in, and got the CC back up, it was just an awesome experience! (P.S. - I have no idea if we won, my comp crapped out soon after)

I can't wait until the rest of you guys get to experience this as well!  Great work done by the whole NS team!

I had evolved outside the engine room so I had plenty of room, and made my way to the airlock. When I got to the door to the airlock area, the noise of battle rung close on the other side. This was the point where I could not believe it was happening to me. I waited for a moment, grinning, hoping the marines would try to charge in for the hive behind me. But then an alien died and the tempo of battle slowed. I knew my broodmates needed me, so I rather clumsily kicked the switch to the door, to see 3 marines on the other side. They all turned to see who had opened the door, and upon seeing me two of them turned and ran. The third must have known there was little hope in escape, and barreled into me, gun ablaze. Then his model was replaced by gibs.  I knew this was going to be a good day.

I burst out of our hive room, and spotted 2 marines down at the end of a long hallway. I bellowed as charge kicked in, and down the hall screaming I went. The marines stood there, bravely defending their ground until they could see the whites of my eyes. Their morale failed, and they broke as I trailed them through the halls of Nothing. As they were backpedaling one got caught on a wall, and soon was crushed beneath my feet leaving the lone marine. He and stopped trying to shoot me, just turned and ran. I whipped him, paralyzing him on the spot, then proceeded to trample him while he looked on.

So I climbed onto the wall and sat in a corner, waiting for him (I think it was Tommy or Mojo?) to approach the hallway below me.  Instead, to my joy and rapture, the commander dropped a Resource Tower on the node, and the poor little fool started building.  So I crept along the wall behind him, my footsteps inaudible under the sound of the building under construction.  Drop down, charge, and he was gibs before he knew what was attacking him.

Then I laid into the RT, but shortly afterwards saw another orange blob - the 2nd marine, Ekaj, come to help build.  So I turned around and jumped back onto the wall, climbing into a corner as he approached.  He knew there was something else in the room, but couldn't find me... so I maneuvered a bit, then hopped down and jumped him.

Sadly, my party ended there... I might have gotten off a bite, but he did eventually kill me.  ):  However, I was quite happy to hear him later exclaim "Ok, that's probably the first time I've *ever* been scared in a computer game!"

What's the moral of this story?  Bobs like dark rooms.  (: <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

<b>MonsE</b>

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td><b>Quote</b> </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE"><!--QuoteEBegin-->I do have one level5 story. We were at the end of a game that had gotten itself into a bit of a stalemate on Hera. I had been commanding (duh), and we had run out our resources. Combined with a HUGE number of alien turrets, there was no way we could survive outside our base, so we decided to make a last stand in the Marine spawn. For about 40 minutes the battle waged back and forth with neither side able to get the upper hand - we had just enough resource trickle to get an occasional heavy weapon, and drop as much health as possible every 5 minutes or so. I jumped out of commander mode and lent my grenades to the fray. We would get right on the brink of death from a Level1 xenocide, but they never managed to force their way into the CC which had the weapons lab and spawn gate as we had mined it to hell.

Finally, after a huge push, the aliens got a level1 into the CC minibase and took out everything. We had just taken a bad xenocide attack, and there were no troops left but me. I ran out to the landing pad to make my final Bataan-like last stand.

As I turned to face the spawn: all I saw was a huge Level5, bellowing like an angry demon.

I shot off a brace of grenades, but they bounced behind him harmlessly as he chargeed past them. I threw my GL off the ledge to gain some speed and whipped out my LMG, firing and strafing for all I was worth. He charged, missed; charged, missed again. I knew if I could just hold on and get him, I could grab a welder and get us back in the game.

I backpedalled away, teetering on the edge of the cliff, turned...

And saw nothing but a screenfull of tusks as he gored me, sending my gibs off the edge into the darkness below.

Talk about Natural Selection...

I read only the first two stories and i must say:

    I! WANT! THIS! MOD! NOW!

    But then I think:
"If this mod is as great as I think and that in his unpublic-beta-stage, how great will it be when I wait some weeks more? I don't want the mod NOW, I want it when Flayra thinks it's DONE! May it be days, may it  be weeks, may it be months, I want the mod to be released when Flayra wants to because every time new shots are posted, I'm happy that I've stayed here and that I've waited"

Great job, this way is painfull for the community, but it's a sweet pain...

Amazing stuff, is there any fan fiction just like that? Maybe someone could do a more complete anthology of their NS playtest experiences or something as I love hearing those stories.
Thanks Monse, youve made my day... night.

    -Here's a fake PT account-

It was a normal fight. About 6 vs. 6. I had luckily joined the Alien side. My team didn't waste any time going for the rusher spots. Anyways I was always more of a lone ranger. I decided to take the darkest path to the main fighting room. All of a sudden I saw two Marines comming from the corner of the hall. I quickly went and climbed to the corner of the cieling waiting to trample them. I wall climbed the ceiling forward more and more. Suddenly one of them saw me and started to warn his partner. I ran back scared. I was a gonner in realality, I would never make it back. But for some strange reason I couldn't reverse. I then looked back and saw a team mate of mine that had followed me the whole time. He signeled to fight. He and I went to it. Dodging bullets like they were wild fire we got one of them. However I saw that my team mate was -dead-. I was so furios I got the other guy like that (/snapping fingers). I went back to join the rest of my team. However I was ambushed my another Marine(and died).

I'll think about continuing this(in the fan-fiction forum though)

MCThornGristle -- it's actually been pretty balanced, but the difference is that when the marines get beaten, they generally get scared half to death many times, either by a level 1 jumping out of nowhere and exploding or a level 5 trampling through the base.  Thus, the marine stories are generally a lot more fun to experience and to read.

Heh. These are a measly couple stories out of a the the large selection of ones we all have implanted in out memories. Literally every "proper" game we've played has at least one memorable story behind it. I swear, the game is really that good. Even something as simple as walking down a hall can be cool in this game... I kid you not.

But my point is, this is just a few stories. Our most memorable ones right now. Aliens tearing the place up really has a lot of drama in it obviously. This isn't where we're fully describing how the entire game plays out, every single game... It's just a couple stories. Not a "This is all you're going to see" list.

And if it were the case that marines get totoally pwned every match, you should be glad you've got an amazing dev team behind this game, who would do everything they could to "fix" it. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

I'll talk your word for it then, considering you've like, played the game and everything.  It'd be neat if there were marine stories about whiping out a bunch of aliens through superior coordination of firepower and welding doors and trapping them in a corner - stuff like that.

<!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo--> Hehe, there have been plenty of those too.

Taking down an alien hive can be one of the coolest things in the game... especially if you're part of a large squad kickin ### the whole way there. It just gives you a really great rush working as such an effective team. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

    "Team"
    You can say that again.

Oh man, don't get me started on the marine teamplay. Just <i>walking</i> together feels cool. Playing as a marine is a really social experience, especially if you've got a bunch of guys using voice comm. One of the dev team's main goals, and I think they've hit it right on.

    I really don't know what I can and can't say though, so I'll stop now. <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

Spelling.  Grammar.  Punctuation.  These are the tools of the master poster... use them well.  <!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo-->

I've mostly played Alien, but had some fun as a marine as well.  Actually, one of my favorite moments was just playing base defense while the rest of the team went out!  "Holdin' down the fort"... I always played defense in CTF games, it just fits. (:

As for marines winning... when you lose a hive to a bunch of jarheads, it's just as dramatic.  It's a messy battle, because the hive rooms are always disorganized, dim, and crowded with debris and alien structures (turrets, upgrade towers, and of course the enormous hive).  Meanwhile aliens are dropping in through vents left and right, taking quick shots from around corners and retreating into darkness.  Marines are moving around for position, tangling in webs unnoticed in the frenzy of battle.  They'll be setting up a quick turret when they're suddenly enveloped by a spore cloud... it's an intense situation.  What's even more intense is spawning as a level1 in the midst of a firefight and just *jumping* at the nearest muzzle-flash in an attempt to hold off the attackers.

If the aliens win?  We rebuild the turrets, respin the webs, replace any upgrade towers that were lost.  Maybe some aliens have built up resource points during the fight, and evolve to go counterattack.  The battle continues.

If the marines win?  They wipe off their virtual brows (and usually their real ones) and immediately start setting up a satellite base of turrets to hold the area and prevent the aliens from rebuilding.  Because there are more aliens to kill and more hives to destroy.

Ok, here is a nice meaty marine story where we did some ### kicking:

It had been a fairly close game, with the aliens usually having about 2 hives and the marines keeping the 3rd one down. The marines finally saved up enough resources to equip themselves with a couple grenade launchers, and a couple of shotguns.

We felt the base was well defended and moved out down the elevator in Bast. Nothing got in our way en route to the "green/water hive" and we began spamming it to death. Suddently, a horde of level 1's, and a level 4 charged up the nearby ladder and came in claws flying. I remember one level 1 doing a leap attack, inches before it hit my face, a messy blast from my shotgun ripped it to shreds, and it fell dead at my feet. We quickly polished the rest off with some grenades and setup turrets to take care of the hive.

Moving down the same ladders the alien had ascended, we encountered an intricate set of webs woven around the exit. Pulling out my trusty welder, I cut through the webs (<b> As of right now, welders break webs</b>). We stepped into the tram hallway, and Monse, our commander, had layed out all the refils we needed.

Before we could pick up much, the aliens came charging down the long hall again. We threw grenades left and right, blowing up a few aliens on the way. A couple level 1's  shot through, and mutilated a teamate or two. A squad member went nuts, and took them both out with 2 clean, point blank shots of his shotgun.

We moved down the hall, took a left to the refinery and took out a few more webs. Once in there, we threw all the lead we had left into the hive to kill it, with Monse dumping ammo at our feet in a constant stream. A few aliens tried to attack, but were disposed of quite quickly. We set up a turret for good measure when we suddenly heard "Get the hell back here with that welder!" (does that sound familiar...)

END - Please read my first story on page 1 to see more of this story. This just shows how quickly the pace of a game can change guys <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

I'm curious to see what this is like in a public server where the people have no connection, little common bond and don't know each other at all. Games are as much about who you are playing it with as they are the game itself.

Look at Counter-Strike. It's a good game that when played on a public server is unbearable, play it with friends with some sort of bond and teamwork and it's stunning however.

I've expreseed these fears before but I just hope that the NS community stays small enough that it feels and acts like a community - rather than the National Society for the Preservation of ######## and Llamas.

I think that NS's advancements in team cooperation and communication, as well as the recently added Voice Com, will make the team-oriented experience stronger than it was in CS.

To me, CS always felt like a bunch of deathmatch players that just happened to be on a team with a bunch of other random players. The "teamwork" often simply consisted of following someone else's lead or shooting whatever the next guy was shooting. It seemed very rudimentary to me.

Yeah, cyon, that sounds completely like what i was thinking, CS is way to deathmatch, NS actualyl REQUIRES some teamwork, unless you WANT to get your ### kicked.  I just wonder what the public community is actually going to be like? I hope it stays far away from DC... :/

I think the people that play NS and expect it to be "CS with aliens" will get very disappointed, then quit playing, leaving only the intelligent, sophisticated NS enthusiasts. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->

Here's some quick marines win battles.

We were in NS_Nothing, MonsE and myself where leaving the base.  MonsE stopped (I think to type something).  I stopped as well and looked around a bit.  Just then a Level 1 came running at MonsE.  I fired my shotgun at the beast and then it came running at me.  Then I got it.

Eariler in that game if I recall, we marines were armored up to the teeth, and went hive hunting.  We made to the Great Viaduct hive after many battles, but in the end I was the only one left with 17 health.  I knew I couldn't run or wait for reinforcement so I just unleashed all the grenades I could.  I destroyed the hive with nearly my last grenade.  As I was about to walk away, an alien (I never got to see which one) got me.  But I did teach those suckers a thing or two.   <!--emo&;)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=';)'><!--endemo-->

    And an alien story:

It was in a 3 vs 3 or so match-up in Nothing.  I was a Flyer teaming up with another Flyer.  We just cleaned the marines base, but the game didn't end.  Then I remembered they took our Room with things hive so we flew that way.  We were able to clean out the CC there along with everything else (but no marines.  Just as we did, we got "Your base is under attack" message, and we heard the grenade explosions.  Our third teammate, a builder, was there.  However we knew that we couldn't make it in time to help him.  And we were worried that we'll lose the game when our last hive went down.  Then we remembered there was a hive here....

At nearly the same time, we both evolved to builders.  I placed the hive, but couldn't reach it to help it grow.  I got underneth the hive, and then said, "Get on me!"  He did, and he could reach the hive and speed up the building.  Then he said, "This is so cheating."  After the hive was up, we became lvl 3s and found the last marines spawngate and won.

Yes, the first time I evolved into a levle 5, I got slammed by two marines with grenade launchers. It took em a little while, and I was ienxperienced in handlign him. They lured me into a narrow corridor and I got myself stuck without realizign it and navigated my way with much trouble. Backign away, they bombarded me and I couldnt get up enough speed in all the turns of the tight area to escape or charge. The key, therefore, is to lure a level 5 into a tight area with lotsa corners and hit it with everything youve got. Or just nuke it.

Cut and paste from a thread in the playtester boards (I'm too lazy to write it again):

Some of my more memorable stories occured in previous weeks, but I still think they're worth sharing.  Such as the time that I entered the engine room on Bast and see an alien cocoon on one of the side ledges.  I start to open fire on it, but I can't quite kill it off before a slightly agitated Level 4 pops out.  I'm running out of ammo, but there are some leftover LMG's from previous conflicts.  So when my LMG runs out, I drop it and start reaching for one of the guns on the ground, only to find that it's empty too!  I must've switched weapons between about 5 empty LMG's before the alien decided that I wasn't worth having around as amusement anymore.
