vent your anger here.
If you've downloaded Steam you're probably with the thousands of people who are greatly **** off at Steam. Rather than having 80 topics around the forums each saying the same thing, please post everything here.
I can't believe its this bad. I knew it would be, yet still I can't believe it. How the hell did Valve think they could handle the bandwidth all by themselves? Its amazing.
Not to mention that for each mod you play, it downloads a new copy of Half-Life into the cache. So if you play Half-Life, TFC, and CS, that's 3 copies of HL right there. Of course by that time its hit the 1gb default cache limit and so you're stuck downloading more stuff... at 5K a second...
How did they ever figure this to be a service suitable for the masses?

******* STEAM ********* VALVE ****** ******* *** I WISH THEY WOULD JUST ***** ***** AND ***** *** IN THEIR ***** **** ****!!!!
**** STEAM ********* ***** ****** ***** DIE!!!
Let's see... After waiting impatiently on Wednesday for the release to be postponed, and waiting in front of the computer nearly ALL DAY Thursday, refreshing news sites and steampowered.com every once in a while to watch for the client, I finally went to sleep at around 2am (That's eastern US time)...
So I wake up at 9am thanks to the neighbor doing some "home improvement" and one of the grandparents deciding to call. just for the hell of it...
Ok, so I'm awake... Might as well see when the release will be.... Oh no, I missed it... It came out an hour after I went to sleep (Midnight PDT = 3am EDT), so I was too late to get a 4-digit SteamID... I download the client without any problems, let it go through its little update...
I make my new account, get my 5-digit ID that ends in 666, and it starts converting my installation over...
10 minutes later... Still going... No CPU usage, no network usage, no HD activity...
20 minutes later... Still going... No CPU usage, no network usage, no HD activity...
30 minutes later... Still going... No CPU usage, no network usage, no HD activity...
*END TASK*
(Hey, my patience is limited)
I start Steam, and it works! Yay!
But wait... It never finished importing (Or started for that matter)...
I try to run Half-Life... It wants to download it... 420MB... Ok, I'm on cable, I can handle it...
I click yes. I wait ten minutes... Nothing...
End Task, repeat.
End Task, repeat.
Grrrrrr....
End Task, DO NOT REPEAT.
Final decision... I'll use WON. When Valve fixes their damn importer so I can use my existing installation, I'll switch to Steam. I refuse to waste another minute trying to use that horrible piece of software.
Man, Australia has a group of servers called Game Arena provided by one of the major ISPs. But to access them you gotta download there little program called Cogs.
Now cogs adds about 50 trillion things I don't need, but apparently thanks to the PR Department at Telstra (The ISP) I need a program that has IRC, information on a game I already know I have, access to their file servers via the program and a bunch of other useless utilities JUST so I can play on THEIR servers.
Well sorry, but that's an elitist pack of S***.
They're good servers TOO!
I call it clutter-ware. I don't need it, but according to you I DO just so I can access YOUR stuff. And that is what Steam is... Rather than creating a program that is either fully integrated into all their programs (Hell just release a PATCH to replace the Won system in HL1) or is just a very minimal program like Cheating-Death, they have created this gigantic hunk of junk just to crap all over their fanbase.... It's even worse than Cogs because I have 100% no say in the matter. I either install this program or I can't play online anymore.
It also needs a network connection just to play HL SP.... WTH...
WHAT KIND OF INHUMANE MORON DEVISED THIS SYSTEM?
Much much hate for Steam....
Luckly I got my Family Guy Volume 2 DVD coming today! That should pass the hours of the steam installation.

Add: yes the beta seemed to work better. At least I got CS to run. Then again it's been ages when I tried it, so maybe the updates messed it all up
and I have 56.k so it's never going to work for me
maybe valve will see the huge mistake they made and try and remidy it...
we can only hope
of I would be saying things like
lyndak
"**** **** **** **** **** **** **** **** *** **** ****!"
Anyway, it's just not working right now, obviously. I'll just wait a while until the servers stop getting hit so hard, then try again. Until then, WON is fine for me. It just sucks having to deal with all this after a three-week internet exile, when all I wanna do is play NS.
Another thing that pisses me off, NO CUSTOM CONTENT AT ALL!
It just doesnt work, and chucks all the animators, skinners, and modelers work out into the trash.

the thing is, a large part of the community still isn't aware of the change. So if you wait for the last minute, chances are it's going to be even worse.

Rofl. You are the Winnar.
Because they tested it so well...
Seriously the beta worked really well.....this is an atrocity.

Telstra's PR department couldn't sell heaters to Eskimos. These are the same enlightened souls who said "How could any broadband user need more than 3 gig of downloads and uploads per month?!" Cogs is an evil, evil piece of work, but you're right, the GA servers are pretty good so I put up with it. If I could get around it though I would.
But now there's Steam that I can't get past! Currently one of my housemates in going through the living hell of trying to install this hideous piece of software. Bear in mind that our entire house is limited to around 250meg of downloads per day so each of us updating isn't even remotely feasible. Instead, we're going to try and copy the Steam cache between all our machines, then pray it works. Otherwise in 2 weeks, no more NS. Simple as that. And as stupid as that. What in the name of Flayra was Valve thinking?!
Plus the fact millions of people are hitting the content server atm, we're pretty much **** at the end of the week when WON falls and all we're left with is hot air (You wanted puns darnit).
Meh, bad, bad decision here VALVe.
When STEAM falls, I'll direct as from then on, I'm aware of a method of restoring the entire community using a 3rd party program, basically you can setup virtual networks of people so you're playing people online, only the game thinks it's a LAN game, and thus doesnt need WON authentication.
I'll only release this method as and when.
Ohhhhh sorta like the Battle.net emulators.
Possibilities...
I haven't downloaded it yet, is that why I can't even play NS on my own server?
God what a piece of crap, I remember reading about this in the TFC 2 Forums a long time ago, and people were flat out **** off about it.
**** you Valve.
From a mapping point of view, I really want to know (when Steam becomes mandatory) where I'm going to point my compile tools to?
Damn you to hell, cache files!
I haven't got steam, and I don't intend to get it unless I have to.
