This whole Steam debarcle is an absolute joke. First they force us to use this product that most of us are convinced we don't need, then when they deliver the damn thing it's a buggy, broken hunk of steaming fecal matter. I just hope the WON servers stay up so I can at least play my favorite game whilst Valve works out their latest "quick fix" solution.
4 hours trying to get it to work, once I even succeeded to play dod, but after a minute it crashed. HL worked fine a while ago, but now all games are stuck at "Preparing to play...". After installing steam I cant even use ASE to connect servers (won). HL starts, but gives only an empty console where i have to every time type connect...

What I'm REALLY REALLY <b>REALLY</b> ticked off about is that Steam is COMPULSRY.
You know how I would have Steam? - Sign up an account via the Steam system using your CD-Key for a nice secure SteamID. Now remove EVERYTHING ELSE. Uninstall Steam, all you needed was your SteamID. I DON'T NEED ANYTHING ELSE. Steam should just be a program used for generating a secure key to access your games. I don't WANT to stream stuff over my 56k modem. - Release a patch for HL1 that removes your WonID and replaces it with your SteamID. You enter your CD-Key and generated SteamID for the change over. HL1 functions 100% the way it used to. Wow, I don't need to cache **** because I already have all the stuff I want. - If you want to have all your "pay money to stream games" crap, fine. Have Steam Extra. I want Steam Lite-Give-Me-My-F*******-SteamID - GIVE MY FAN-BASE A freaking OPTION BETWEEN USING STEAM AND JUST GENERATING A freaking STEAM freaking ID

You do not need to download steam unless you want to purchase a valve product over steam. You do not need it to play half life or mods, and you never will. SteamID's are just a different number to WONID's - the average user wont even notice anything has changed.

STEAM is no longer an optional service, Valve has designated it as mandatory for all Half-Life users who wish to continue to play online. The SteamId system is REPLACING the WonId system. In a few short weeks, WON goes away and those who haven't upgraded to Steam won't be able to play...
It'll be fun watching the aging Quake 3 go past Half-Life on Gamespy's server stats...

I can walk into a store and BUY the game, because it's less complicated than streaming it onto my computer. Let alone with a 56k connection.
You DO need Steam. Because Steam replaces Won... so you need to generate a SteamID using Steam... so you need this hunk of crap on your computer to convert HL1 over to the new system... If I find out all I need is a SteamID to keep running, this POS is getting uninstalled INSTANTLY.

Do you have a WON program on your computer? No. Half life conects to the WON server, sends your CD key and gets back authentication information. The introduction of steam will mean that half life will connect to a Steam authentication server instead of a WON one - you do not need to have the steam software installed.
Oh well , I'll manage to borrow a copy of UT2k3 when the WON system is shutting down.
Let's see... there's a RTS/FPS hybrid (of a different kind) for UT already , named Uskaarj. Skaarj... Kharaa. NEG... TSA. Tarydium... nanosludges. Many elements are similar. Anyone interested in porting NS to UT2k3 ?

steam deleted my hl.exe and gave me counter strike and dod! it brought over all the valve mods but screw everyone else... no ns and no hl.exe anymore... i guess i will have to reinstall half life for the first time in 2 1/2 years...steam i hate you
