hehe, I realy like Bios ideas

also as for the nicks 'ruining it' personaly I think it sorta adds, b/c after all we have all of the wonderfull slurs used in RL wars (charlies, gooks etc) I think marines would call em something like Bobs or what not
'SH*T did you see that bob just race around the corner!?! GET HIM!!'
'hey I found their fatty , lets go nuke his ###!'
personalyt I like them ;D (or teh Bugs from starship troopers)

    <!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td><b>Quote</b> </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE"><!--QuoteEBegin-->Bob: parvus (small)
    Fatty: obesus (fat)
    Batty: avolare (fly away)
    blinky: abire (go away)
    Tiny: colossicus (huge)

So the full official names would be
    "Peregrinus validus Parvus"=bob
    "Peregrinus validus Obesus"=Fatty
    "Peregrinus validus Avolare"=batty
    "Peregrinus validus Abire"= Blinky
    "Peregrinus validus Colossicus"= Tiny <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Wow, I'll just say I really, really like that.

I think the names are real cool but onos whoever came out with that name must have some i dont know, maybe they should change that one. Also i know the abilities of the leveled monsters. i think one climbs walls, 2 i think builds stuff, 3 can fly, 4 can teleport, and five they say is unbeatable but it probaly can be beaten it might just take a while, because i dont think they would make it impossible to beat a leveled monster <!--emo&???--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt='???'><!--endemo-->

  • Thansal1Thansal1 Join Date: 2002-08-26 Member: 1233Members
ats why you call em bobs, tinys, what not or lvl 1-5
  • UnknownUnknown Join Date: 2002-06-12 Member: 759Members
The dev team would like it if you NEVER called them bobs, pudgys, flyers, etc.  At least call them by their level or these names (or whatever the real offical names are).
  • Thansal1Thansal1 Join Date: 2002-08-26 Member: 1233Members
why the dislike of bobs etc? (/me is just curious)

Well personally i think onos is the best name cause it sounds kinda mysterious and awe-inspiring, but I think the Aliens should have marine nicknames because in any good war movie you see the soldiers calling the enemy derogatory names (I'm thinking "Space: Above and beyond" here, they call the aliens "chigs")
  • CollateralDamageCollateralDamage Join Date: 2002-07-15 Member: 949Members
There are more factors to consider when you compare the nick names with the official names than just the atmosphere.

For example the ease of pronunciation. If you take one unbiased gamer and give him the choice to say either "Skulk" or "Bob" multiple times, he will say "Bob". Less consonants.

Another one is memorability. "Lerk" is a very generic name; any alien can "lurk". "Flyer" however describes accurately what makes this alien special.

Good names would have kept the advantages of the nicknames without sounding cute.

I don't share the opinion that the developers disliking the nicknames is a sufficient reason to shun those names.

Just thinkin about this why not just call em the way most marines would as like marine lingo in a way.

    Level 1: Wall Crawlers
    Level 2: Builders/Drones/Docs/Workers/I don't know
    Level 3: Flyers/Gluiders
Level 4: Fades <-- cause its the only one I think that suits that alien(These are the ones that teleport right?)
    Level 5: BFA - Big F**kin' Alien

<!--emo&:D--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':D'><!--endemo--> Just an idea that I know wont even be concidered lol

CypherX, your lvl5 is again an odd-man-out. I would suggest "Crusher" or "Smasher".
  • JediYoshiJediYoshi The Cupcake Boss Join Date: 2002-05-27 Member: 674Members
Keeping them short, sweet, to the point, and somewhat explainative is always nice. And welcome to the forums Cypher X. Nice sig, but are you aware that that is the "old" Marine model.
  • Cypher_XCypher_X Join Date: 2002-08-26 Member: 1234Members
Heheh yea... but sometimes if ya have no where to turn it just works best.  Like Q2s BFG.

Thanx, um no I hadn't a clue actually.  I just got it from the screenshots section.  The only new one I've seen is the heavy armor.  Detail in the sig decreased a lot though cause I had to reduce size and quality after I made it! blah... read that forum post a little too late.

You all need to realize that, once you've played the game, once you've been an alien, and once you've seen them work, that every single one of these names will sound so much better than you think they do.  After a few weeks of playing with them, I can say that I don't have a problem with any one of them.  They're all so perfect.

    - "Watch the vents for incoming skulks."
    - "There's a pair of gorges trying to fortify the holo room."
    - "Watch out for the lerk spiking us from up in the rafters."
    - "We need to take out this fade before he takes us out."
    - "####! Onos!"

Besides, would a 'best of the best,  battle-hardened TSA Frontiersman really be saying names like 'bob' or 'pudgy' or 'blinky' or 'tiny'?  (I'll give you flier, but Lerk is infinitely cooler than flier)

    My impressions:

    1) Skulk - I always pictured the level1 as being a little too skittery for this to fit.  To me a "skulk" would be a larger, slower-moving alien that relies purely on stealth.  It's a great name, but I can't decide if it's a good name for THIS alien.

    2) Gorge - Sounds good if you say it aloud, but looks horrible on paper.  Ick.

    3) Lerk - Just plain don't like it.  I associate lurking with ground movement, and the misspelling here (even tho it's obviously intentional) just doesn't work for me.  If anything, I think this would work better for a lvl1.

    4) Fade - Like most people are saying, just sounds a little too "cool".

    5) Onos - Didn't like it at first, but it's grown on me over the past half hour.  Good stuff. =]

    If I were naming them:
    1) No clue.  Probably stick with Skulk.  He'll always be Bob to me.
    2) Sludge
    3) Imp
    4) Gorgon (even tho it has nothing to do with anything, I think the name sounds kinda fitting somehow)
    5) Onos ;)

Gorgon would go good on onos, but not fade.  Imp??  Sludge??  Is there an actual association behind these?   If not it's kinda silly <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->

well.... regardless of what the official names will be, im sure there will still be plenty of people calling them lvl 1-5 or Bob/Blinky ect.

And they'll probably be flamed or stabbed with a broken whiskey bottle.

    Suggestions

    1.) Skulk
    2.) Purge
    3.) Spyker
    4.) Fade
    5.) Behemoth

I enjoy the idea of scientific names and the 'official names' being the nicks the marines have given them. So it's better if they're english words and not alien like someone suggested.

So it's much more reasonable to be shouting out
WE GOT SKULKERS IN THE DUCTS!
Purgers are setting up the 2nd hive!
    Spykers on the ceiling!
    Faders near the generator!
    and... "BEHEMOTHS IN OUR BASE!"

    weeeeee insanity ensues

Does "Onos" stand for one? Or is it plural as is?
  • gutterclutchgutterclutch Join Date: 2002-06-30 Member: 850Members
Freemantle suggested Vec or Veck for the level 1, and I think that's the single best suggestion made in this thread so far. I would comment on the amount of pointless nonproductive spam in here, but I'm all for the level 1 name being changed from Skulk to Veck. It's a fantastic name
  • BiomechanoidBiomechanoid Join Date: 2002-02-12 Member: 203Members
if they don't release an official scientific set of names and JUST the official slang ones... then..
the language factor you need is something that's easy to remember (spelling wise too), easy to say/type, and conveys what the alien is. so far the only ones that do this in your list are gorge and fade.

lvl1- I want <b>BOB</b> (just out of attatchment), but like other people have pointed out, skulk is a pretty generic term- <b>SKITTERS</b> ('cause it skitters across the ceiling) or even a <b>ROACH</b> (cause they seem to be able to get all overthe place)

lvl 2- gorge.... when I first saw this I read it as george. I honestly don't know what's wrong with <b>PUDGY</b>... it sounds like something an actual marine would come up with. gorge doesn't exactly flow off teh tounge for me either- it IS a gutteral sound, but a beast this small doesn't need some harsh conssonants for its description. actually, because its "vomiting" to make the buildings, something that flows off the tounge (like <b>ONOS</b>) would work. the hard part is finding a word that flows off the tounge and that will convey a beast that's either obese or builds things... <b>OBESE</b> does work for this thou.

lvl3- I'm sorry but lerk... like someone else pointed out, that implies stealth, slow moving, hide in teh corners and dark alleys following you from behind. no where does flying come to mind with that description. someone said <b>IMP</b>. which soudns nice, but doesn't exactly bring about the idea of a flying monster. <b>HARPIE</b> would be good, if a little long on the speech and the typing (<b>HARP</b>?) flier, while is the best descriptive, isn't really a nick name to me. a "<b>BAT</b>" is good, short, and can be associated with blood sucking vampires very easily, but then bat is a little too cutsie for the mod.

lvl4- <b>FADE</b>. this is the only one of the set that I actually liked. keep it.

lvl5- onos, like someones said "oh no!"s sounds cheezy. <b>GARG</b> (short of gargantuan) is taken from SP HL, so you can't take that one. Tiny is funny, but like you guys said it's too cute for the mod. langauge wise, you'd be best off with a more gutteral soudning name as someone pointed out eralier. onos fits the goal of being short and easily flows off the tounge, but it doesn't convey a sense of what teh actual monster is. <b>COLOS</b>... short for <b>COLOSSUS</b> (err. misspelling?) flows like onos, spelled a little differently, has teh hard "c" sound to give it a littel more gutteral of a sound, and if extended to its full name, actually conveys what teh beast is about. another alternative could be <b>TITAN</b>. not quite as gutteral but has the sharp "t" sound, but easy to say, implies great power and size, and isn't hard to type out in a fight.

just my constructive criticism and some suggestions- but who reads the longer posts anyways?

edit, I put names in bold so people who "read" by scanning posts can see them

Skulks skulk. Its what they do. It fits like a glove.

    Gorge, oh its Gorge-ious. ;D

<!--QuoteBegin--></span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td><b>Quote</b> </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE"><!--QuoteEBegin-->lvl3- I'm sorry but lerk... like someone else pointed out, that implies stealth, slow moving, hide in teh corners and dark alleys following you from behind. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Thats what the Level 3 does for a living. If you try to fight head to head with a few marines, you wouldnt get too far. Apart from the slow moving, your description IS what the Level 3 is.

Fade. Hmmm. Everyone seems to like it. I don't all that much. But it works, so I say leave it.

Onos. Much better without the h ;D .  Still a bit strange, but it seems to be slowly fitting into place.

I like Infinitums sugestions... I find Purge much easier to say than Gorge, and I think Spyker sounds much better than Lerk tho it might not give an idea of a flying alien... but it DOES shoot spikes doesnt it? <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->
Behemoth - Onos... idunno which i like best (heh, tho behemoth is the only one I know how to pronounce...)

However, I always had the idea that scientists (or whatever) had given the aliens latin names describing their abilities, and that the marines would have come up with nicknames out of these latin names... just an idea of mine... and I dont know any latin so I have no idea of what these nicknames could be like...

    edit:
btw, I dunno who said it, but i think Skulker and Fader and maby Lerker sounds better than Skulk, Fade and Lerk...
