Most ppl would have refered to them as Skulkers, Gorgers, Lerkers, Faders anyway. Onos would just be Onos'
What would you say in the heat of battle? "We've got skulkers in the ducts!" or "We've got skulks in the ducts!"
howdy, long time no babble ~;) i think these names are almost perfectly on target. they all seem very appropriate to the personalities of each class. I am especially fond of skulk, lerk and onos. onos sounds slightly greek or latin and very intimidating, just the sort of thing i would imagine while seated next to my fellow lugheads being briefed about what will likely gouge bits out of our chests.
i like the idea of gorge, the pudgy class could not be better suited by any other name; the implied voracity is perfect. a slight problem i see with it is the plural, it seems really odd to me to say gorges... are they beautiful in numbers? (well, i would think so but the lugheads may not). perhaps gorgers would be more appropriate?
although i haven't seen the lvl4 in action much fade just seems to blatantly 'plain' english... fade is nice since it rhymes with shade and conjures references to ghosts and sppoks and such, but does it really do justice to its aggressive nature? however, if said with the appropriate amount of venom it is quite effective (try it. angrily now, repeat after me: FADE)
as for the scientific names that were brought up (they were conjugated wrong, but i'm still a picky biologist) i really doubt that they would be classified as subspecies (ie, having three parts to their names: genus species subspecies). i think the military works far faster than scientists in times of action. study of aliens would likely be limited to analysis of strengths and flaws rather than scientific/systematic classification and description. technical names would likely start as numerical labelling of specimens as collected and variations thereof encountered afterwards. besides, i really don't want to have to type out a full scientific name while screaming for help. i don't even think HL will let me italicize them, and that is just wrong (.../me thinks no one got that humour but himself ~;)
on a completely unrelated note, i move tomorrow and may never be able to play NS in its finished glory ~:C even through my absence i've been thinking about it all, thanks guys...
Even given names, im probably going to refer to them by their level in game <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo-->
i'm not actually moving far away, but it is in terms of computers. i'll be living with a bunch of hippies this year, and i mean the wheat-grass-tofu-all-organic-save-the-world-glory hippies. a nice bunch of guys, but it will be a big shock for me. i intend to try to convert them all into basement loving otaku that revel in unending tides of digital mayhem ~:D i think that my hardest achievement will be convincing them that neil young actually does suck and all of the random thumping noises i listen to are very intellectual and musical. i may be spending a lot of time in internet cafés *cough* studying... yes, ~;) i'll find a way, i have to, in order to show comprox that humans are mushy and disorganized!
(btw, a big congrats, currently it looks even more incredible since i've been away so long. gj)

now i know how to manage with the names.... those new alien names are the "official" one, you know... scientist came and analyse the corps of those aliens and gave them name.. but on the battlefield the marines always name them as bobs, blinkys and tinys... (thats always a good way to know wile your playing how was in this forum for a long time...)
<!--QuoteBegin--Gazaar+Aug. 31 2002,01:15--></span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td><b>Quote</b> (Gazaar @ Aug. 31 2002,01:15)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE"><!--QuoteEBegin-->I'm talking about names a scientist would pull out of his butt when he sees things like this.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><span id='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> Dunno about you, but I don't think I'd pull the names "Lerk" or "Gorge" out of my arse if I were a scientist.
They should have names (preferbly Greek/Roman God names) that fit their ability. The marines are the ones then who saw the aliens and their abilities and then gave them a name that fitted that ability.

And now think about what you have say.... who were the ones that saw them first..? i mean in the real world.... what did we agve for names to this aliens? yes right, bob, blinky, tiny. I think after this name you can see how the marines would react if they would see the aliens theyr first time, i dont think theyr names would be much diferent than ouers.
remember now i mixed all these words up to form words that at least could be said. i did my best <!--emo&:p--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/tounge.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':p'><!--endemo-->
I doubt the aliens themselves would have names that they call each other so we cant name them from that. Because they are telepathic I should think they either know who they are talking to and be talked to by (if they are individuals) or it doesnt matter whether they have names because they are all just drones for a queen.
I am agaisnt a formal naming system in general, for me its either scientific or a nick name given by marines, its obvoius these aren't sceintific so they have to be nick names...And I can't concive of any self respecting marine that would come up with these...Its not that they are bad, simply out of context...I mean who exactly gave these aliens the names? In the game world I mean.
I think the names for the most part would work, but I agree that "gorge" and "fade" are not too good. Onos will be much better than the "oni" suggestion which is running around, simply because "oni" couldn't possibly fit the level 5 in any way...and not just by appearance, but by the "culture" of the aliens. An Oni would have nothing to do with mutations and hive-mentality stuff...just try to forget it, it won't work.
I personally became quite attached to the number-naming system. It's a military-style scientific naming method, and if aliens didn't speak english, and humans wouldn't want to become too attached to the aliens, I think the marines'd just number them. (As well as number how many of em' that they slaughter...) I suppose my analysis is too psychological. <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo--> The number system also allowed us to give them our own names and not feel incorrect or guilty about it...
But this is Flayra's game, and Flayra's names are his right, so why did I even write this post? (Maybe the fact that it's 3:30 AM has somethin' to do with it.) Goodnight.

I think fade is ok, because its near the reality, i mean, you know abaout what you are talking.. but.. skulk... for me its more alien language than marine language...

Oni sounds too much like that half-finished game that nobody enjoyed cause it was a bunch of corridoors with crates and a ###### save system.
I stick to my idea of making the rest of them verbs. Skulker, Gorger, Lerker, Fader.
