What irritated me about Red Alert was that it was the units of the old game with better graphics, and all the good bits chopped out. No storyline. Boring missions. I mean... this is the impression I got of the allied campaign:

First briefing: "Ah, our new commander. Ok, for this mission, we want you to go in and kill everything as a test of your abilities."
Second briefing: "Oh good! Now, we want you to move into a new area and kill everything."
    Third briefing: "Kill everything."
Fourth briefing: "This is Tanya. Hello, Tanya. We want you to use her... to kill everything."
Fifth briefing: "Ok. This time we're going for the stealthy approach. We want you.... to kill everything."

Boooooooring. No subplots. No wierd alien plants. A copy and paste of the original with higher resolution, with the story chopped out.

I hadn't really played the first C&C before Red Alert.

And besides I was too busy blowing up people with Naval Might rather than worrying about story.

Although there was that cool spy mission in the allied campain. Or that even more interesting Nuclear Reactor mission that took place inside.

1st Warzone 2100 - 3D graphics, though primitive, gave a extra edge to the feel. interchangable parts with 200 researchables and about 4000 combinations made it super special. Unfortunetly multiplay suffers from a Hover-Python-Heavy Cannon chasis-body-weapon combo syndrome. single player is excellent, none the less, with unit preservation between missions and aquireable RANKS for units increasing HP/damage/speed/etc. Nice use of the "the world has been destroyed now rebuild it" theme, with some consperacy thrown into the mix (the conspiracy is that something caused the destruction of atleast 80% of the population that BUILT the damn things in the first place. lets just say the Ai behind it has it's own plans. ) unfortunetly i was only able to play it thrice before my CD broke. d*** used game sale ...

2nd StarCraft: Brood War (though interchangable with WarCraft 3... the Frozen Throne!!!) simply because of the ballance in both games. if you got crushed by zerglings, it was probably because you didn't build any FireBats and upgrade armor. NTM WC3:TFT's map maker is the best map maker possibly ever, as well.

3rd Soul Calibur 2, any "version". because i can't play spawn on GameCube (SH**!! wrong choice in consoles) and because 2 other characters were given only to certain consoles; spawn is XBOX, Hihatchi (spelling?) for PS2, correct?

4th huh? fourth place? no one gives a s*** about who came in fourth... but for those of you who do, it's Planetside. lets just say the free sample was nice, but dont expect me to buy the whole d*** store.

Sadly Spawn isn't quite as good (or even cool) as he could be. Oh, and let's not talk about Heihachi, please? I have yet to actually see Link in action, but since Cervantes is available on all three platforms, I have nothing to complain.

Damn you Yankees! Communism is the way to go! Capitalist pigs!

On the subject of games, I might have to agree with the guy who mentioned Planescape: Torment. The captivating and well-defined story just defies description, not to mention the rich and original world. Oh, and the game's setting and plot are obviously geared towards a mature audience than most games. Torment, simply put, is one of those rare gems that, while not necessarily excellent as games, still show the possibilities of this medium. Perhaps, had it been more popular, we'd be seeing real stories in games now, with living, breathing characters instead of the horrid and tired clichés.

Then again, there's still the Total War series, UFO: Enemy Unknown (or X-Com, if you will), Civilization, and even DooM that could get my vote.

I stumble over this thread having just finished Invisible War for the first time, so maybe I'm a little biased against Planescape at the moment, but I'd definetely say Deus Ex. It is in my opinion the prototype of the 'grown up' computer game, an experience closer to good literature than to the likes of Space Invaders.

Personally, i'd have to go with Final Fantasy VII throught X, though topping it all is IX.

FFVII is one of the better in storyline terms, while i prefer FFIX for playability...

i just got VII, VIII and IX back for xmas WOOT!!! (used to have them with my PS1, but when i got rid of it, i had to get rid of those games.. didnt get a ps2 for a couple months after that)

I had forgotten just how good these games really were, and how much time they sucked out of my life (i recall spending about 130 hours on FFVIII once, without getting onto disc4 !!!!!!)

FFX has, obviously, far superior graphics than the others, but it just doesnt cut it on its plot and length... I also dont particularly like the level up system - love the 5-figure damage and HP abilities tho

Half-Life (of course includes NS )
Deus Ex (not Deus Ex 2... played the demo and it seemed to suck big time)
    Thief 1 & 2
    Splinter Cell
    UFO: Enemy Unknown
    Doom 1 & 2 (I'm serious (Doom 3 looks good too ))

Final Fantasy IV - This is the game that really got me into gaming. I had played a bunch of games, but I really, really, really enjoyed the game. It also introduced me to the FF series.

Day of Defeat - It takes all of the good things about Half-Life mods and takes out all of the bad things from others. The maps are fun and have great replay ability, you have the wave spawn system which beats the ever-loving tar out of Counter-Strike's "watch the AWP camper for three minutes" system, and it's free.

Final Fantasy VII - It really broke the FF series from a sort of cult favorite to mainstream success, and with good reason. The story was great, even if Sephiroth is a whiny, "Mommy didn't love me" villian. More to the point, It was the first game where I actually cared about the characters. I was quite upset when Aeris died because I wanted Cloud to hook up with her, not that tart Tifa. Oh, she was also part of my "get the job done" line up and I had invested a lot into her.

Gran Turismo 2 - It was my major for a year in college. I had the optimum gear ratio's memorized for each track. It also had a kickin' soundtrack.

Dr. Mario - Like Tetris, only better.

Finch's Horribly Overated Game Award - Counter-Strike - It's just not that great. Sure, it was the first "realism" based tactical shooter, but it's just not that great. And that's not counting the CS community.

I just can't muster the same enthusiasm for PS:T as for the DXes for a number of reasons:

It lagged on any machine I ever owned, be it my old Celeron 500 or the AMD XP 2000+ I'm currently playing DX2 with.

Its actual gameplay mechanisms - interface, battle system and so on - were mediocre at best. Essentially, it was an interactive graphic novel. Not a bad thing in any way, but DX offered more than solid gameplay to back its other qualities up.

I played it in the German translation. A lethal mistake, believe me.

DXes classic sci-fi plot just hit a weak spot in me.

This is not to say I don't love Planescape - to me, it's simply a close second. Guess you could come up with a similiar list and conclusion to DX
