I recommend going out with your (male) cousins, if you can't find any appropriate male friends to go out with. Generally you can talk about the same stuff, you just have to be a little bit more careful not to screw up stuff with your family <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> .
You could try bars, bowling, a gym (although, generally more males are there than females, but women like to run on treadmills and go on the stair climbers a lot). Otherwise, if there is an amusment park nearby, you could go with your friends and try to go around with a group of women too (although, that might just get your friends instead of a girlfriend - and it can be heard to keep a group larger than 6 together - especially without angering people walking around you if you're all next to eachother).
The beach can work, but that would take the most confidence (or unshyness, as I like to think of it - because I'm perfectly confident, just to shy to talk to people...which probably makes no sense).
Then again, don't listen to me to much (...as everyone here seems to say). The only girl I especially liked beyond a crush (man, that word is dumb) lives in eastern Europe...and I'm not exceptionally sure she liked me much more than a friend.
I guess bars are the only place you can really go by yourself to meet people effectively....maybe clubs, but bah, I can't even go to bars. That's mostly my cousin's advice.

3rd one was with the female friends OTHER cousin (who I did not know was her cousin at the time), this one just recently ended about 2 weeks ago, lasted two months, met her at the same bar/club
